On non-QRT Mappings of the Plane
We construct 9-parameter and 13-parameter dynamical systems of the plane
which map bi-quadratic curves to other bi-quadratic curves and return to the
original curve after two iterations. These generalize the QRT maps which map
each such curve to itself. The new families of maps include those that were
found as reductions of integrable lattices
Effect of Interband Transitions on the c axis Penetration Depth of Layered Superconductors
The electromagnetic response of a system with two planes per unit cell
involves, in addition to the usual intraband contribution, an added interband
term. These transitions affect the temperature dependence and the magnitude of
the zero temperature c-axis penetration depth. When the interplane hopping is
sufficiently small, the interband transitions dominate the low temperature
behaviour of the penetration depth which then does not reflect the linear
temperature dependence of the intraband term and in comparison becomes quite
flat even for a d-wave gap. It is in this regime that the pseudogap was found
in our previous normal state calculations of the c-axis conductivity, and the

Computing the first eigenpair of the p-Laplacian via inverse iteration of sublinear supersolutions
We introduce an iterative method for computing the first eigenpair
for the -Laplacian operator with homogeneous Dirichlet
data as the limit of as , where

shown to work for any smooth, bounded domain. Solutions to the Lane-Emden
problem are obtained through inverse iteration of a super-solution which is

Islands of linkage in an ocean of pervasive recombination reveals two-speed evolution of human cytomegalovirus genomes
Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infects most of the population worldwide, persisting throughout the host's life in a latent state with periodic episodes of reactivation. While typically asymptomatic, HCMV can cause fatal disease among congenitally infected infants and immunocompromised patients. These clinical issues are compounded by the emergence of antiviral resistance and the absence of an effective vaccine, the development of which is likely complicated by the numerous immune evasins encoded by HCMV to counter the host's adaptive immune responses, a feature that facilitates frequent super-infections. Understanding the evolutionary dynamics of HCMV is essential for the development of effective new drugs and vaccines. By comparing viral genomes from uncultivated or low-passaged clinical samples of diverse origins, we observe evidence of frequent homologous recombination events, both recent and ancient, and no structure of HCMV genetic diversity at the whole-genome scale. Analysis of individual gene-scale loci reveals a striking dichotomy: while most of the genome is highly conserved, recombines essentially freely and has evolved under purifying selection, 21 genes display extreme diversity, structured into distinct genotypes that do not recombine with each other. Most of these hyper-variable genes encode glycoproteins involved in cell entry or escape of host immunity. Evidence that half of them have diverged through episodes of intense positive selection suggests that rapid evolution of hyper-variable loci is likely driven by interactions with host immunity. It appears that this process is enabled by recombination unlinking hyper-variable loci from strongly constrained neighboring sites. It is conceivable that viral mechanisms facilitating super-infection have evolved to promote recombination between diverged genotypes, allowing the virus to continuously diversify at key loci to escape immune detection, while maintaining a genome optimally adapted to its asymptomatic infectious lifecycle
Hydrodynamic Limit of the Boltzmann Equation with Contact Discontinuities
The hydrodynamic limit for the Boltzmann equation is studied in the case when
the limit system, that is, the system of Euler equations contains contact
discontinuities. When suitable initial data is chosen to avoid the initial
layer, we prove that there exists a unique solution to the Boltzmann equation
globally in time for any given Knudsen number. And this family of solutions
converge to the local Maxwellian defined by the contact discontinuity of the
Euler equations uniformly away from the discontinuity as the Knudsen number
tends to zero. The proof is obtained by an appropriately chosen

Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in âs = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fbâ1 of protonâproton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results
Excitatory effect of ATP on rat area postrema neurons
ATP-induced inward currents and increases in the cytosolic Ca2+ concentration ([Ca]in) were investigated in neurons acutely dissociated from rat area postrema using whole-cell patch-clamp recordings and fura-2 microfluorometry, respectively. The ATP-induced current (IATP) and [Ca]in increases were mimicked by 2-methylthio-ATP and ATP-ÎłS, and were inhibited by P2X receptor (P2XR) antagonists. The currentâvoltage relationship of the IATP exhibited a strong inward rectification, and the amplitude of the IATP was concentration-dependent. The IATP was markedly reduced in the absence of external Na+, and the addition of Ca2+ to Na+-free saline increased the IATP. ATP did not increase [Ca]in in the absence of external Ca2+, and Ca2+ channel antagonists partially inhibited the ATP-induced [Ca]in increase, indicating that ATP increases [Ca]in by Ca2+ influx through both P2XR channels and voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels. There was a negative interaction between P2XR- and nicotinic ACh receptor (nAChR)-channels, which depended on the amplitude and direction of current flow through either channel. Current occlusion was observed at Vhs between â70 and â10 mV when the IATP and ACh-induced current (IACh) were inward, but no occlusion was observed when these currents were outward at a Vh of +40Â mV. The IATP was not inhibited by co-application of ACh when the IACh was markedly decreased either by removal of permeant cations, by setting Vh close to the equilibrium potential of IACh, or by the addition of d-tubocurarine or serotonin. These results suggest that the inhibitory interaction is attributable to inward current flow of cations through the activated P2XR- and nAChR-channels
Reading football in Brazil through a boyâs own story
This is an Accepted Manuscript of an article published in Qualitative Research in Sport, Exercise and Health on 12 Feb 2014, available online: http://www.tandfonline.com/10.1080/2159676X.2013.877962This essay is a contribution to debates about football in Brazil. It is also an
attempt to engage in discussions about how we come to know and talk about the
social world around us. The central element of the essay is the story of one
young manâs interaction with a particular sporting space and the emotions and
insights that are triggered by memories of that place, situated as it is in a rapidly
developing country but retaining many of the problems associated with under
development. Absolved from any responsibility to adhere to a dominant value
system or to feel constrained by research ethics, the storyteller is free to offer
honest, if conflicted, personal reflections on a range of issues, including poverty,
âraceâ and sporting values. The result is a story which does not negate the
necessity of more orthodox research on sport in Brazil, particularly related to the
hosting of sport mega events but which reminds us of the importance of
understanding the world through everyday personal experience
Stable isotope food-web analysis and mercury biomagnification in polar bears ( Ursus maritimus )
Mercury (Hg) biomagnification occurs in many ecosystems, resulting in a greater potential for toxicological effects in higher-level trophic feeders. However, Hg transport pathways through different food-web channels are not well known, particularly in high-latitude systems affected by the atmospheric Hg deposition associated with snow and ice. Here, we report on stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios, and Hg concentrations, determined for 26, late 19th and early 20th century, polar bear ( Ursus maritimus ) hair specimens, collected from catalogued museum collections. These data elucidate relationships between the high-latitude marine food-web structure and Hg concentrations in polar bears. The carbon isotope compositions of polar bear hairs suggest that polar bears derive nutrition from coupled food-web channels, based in pelagic and sympagic primary producers, whereas the nitrogen isotope compositions indicate that polar bears occupy > fourth-level trophic positions. Our results show a positive correlation between polar bear hair Hg concentrations and δ 15 N. Interpretation of the stable isotope data in combination with Hg concentrations tentatively suggests that polar bears participating in predominantly pelagic food webs exhibit higher mercury concentrations than polar bears participating in predominantly sympagic food webs.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/73930/1/j.1751-8369.2009.00114.x.pd
