Clustering Properties of Low-Luminosity Star-Forming galaxies at z = 0.24 and 0.40 in the Subaru Deep Field

We present our analysis on the clustering properties of star-forming galaxies selected by narrow-band excesses in the Subaru Deep Field. Specifically we focus on Halpha emitting galaxies at z = 0.24 and z = 0.40 in the same field, to investigate possible evolutionary signatures of clustering properties of star-forming galaxies. Based on the analysis on 228 Halpha emitting galaxies with 39.8 < log L(Halpha) < 40.8 at z = 0.40, we find that their two-point correlation function is estimated as xi = (r/1.62^{+0.64}_{-0.50} Mpc)^{-1.84 +/- 0.08}. This is similar to that of Halpha emitting galaxies in the same Halpha luminosity range at z = 0.24, xi = (r/1.88^{+0.60}_{-0.49} Mpc)^{-1.89 +/- 0.07}. These correlation lengths are smaller than those for the brighter galaxy sample studied by Meneux et al. (2006) in the same redshift range. The evolution of correlation length between z = 0.24 and z = 0.40 is interpreted by the gravitational growth of the dark matter halos.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, PASJ, Vol.60, No.6, in pres

Case report: Young-onset large vessel ischemic stroke due to hyperhomocysteinemia associated with the C677T polymorphism on 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase and multi-vitamin deficiency

Hyperhomocysteinemia is an important risk factor for cerebral infarction. Herein, we report on a 30-year-old man previously diagnosed with epilepsy who presented with right hemiplegia and total aphasia. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a fronto-temporal ischemic lesion due to occlusion of the left middle cerebral artery. Clinical testing and imaging demonstrated that he had hyperhomocysteinemia induced by multiple factors including the C677T polymorphism on 5.10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR), and multiple vitamin deficiencies. The C677T polymorphism on MTHFR is closely related to hyperhomocysteinemia and folate deficiency in epileptic patients who are taking multiple anti-convulsants. Given hyperhomocysteinemia can independently cause stroke at a young age, physicians should periodically examine plasma homocysteine and serum folic acid levels in epileptic patients who are on long-term regimens of multiple anti-epileptic drugs

Tokushima Park (originally named Tokushima Central Park) is the Japan’s second western-style park that was opened in 1906. We investigated landscape architecture of Tokushima Park based on a blueprint made in 1905 to understand its purpose and function of the park, and compared with Hibiya Park that is the Japan’s first western-style park. Tokushima Park consisted of five areas. The central area included Mt. Shiroyama (Castle Mountain), and primeval forest was protected without allowing to make a big building within the area. A commercial museum, an athletic field, and a botanical garden and a library were placed in the southern, western and eastern areas respectively, so that each area was designed to exhibit each function. Tokushima Park and Hibiya Park were designed by the same two persons Seiroku Honda and Takanori Hongo. The two parks were equipped with a wide road, an athletic field, a botanical garden and so on, and these facilities were adopted to the park made since them. Because Seiroku Honda adopted three design drawings of German parks from the book Gärtnerisches Planzeichnen into a blueprint of Hibiya Park, we investigated the book to ascertain whether any design drawing was also used in Tokushima Park. We found that Seifersdorf Castle, the castle of count Brühl that was built at Seifersdorf in Germany in 13th century, is similar to the southern area of Tokushima Park

Is Estrogen Effective for Full-Thickness Cutaneous Wound Healing in Young Male Mice ?

The aim of this study is to show the effects of estrogen upon its topical application on the wound healing process in young male mice. Fifty-six male mice aged 7 weeks old were divided into 4 groups: sham operation, castration, estrogen treatment after sham operation, and estrogen treatment after castration. Wound healing was observed daily until day 14 after wounding. Specimens were harvested on days 3, 7, 10, and 14, and stained to evaluate reepithelialization, inflammation, contraction, and collagen accumulation. Wound healing periods of all groups were almost the same, although the concentration of serum estrogen in the estrogen-applied mice was very high, and that in the nonapplied groups was low. The numbers of macrophages in the castrated, estrogen-treated after sham operation, and estrogen-treated after castration groups were significantly decreased compared with that in the sham group in the inflammatory phase; however, the ratio of wound area in these groups did not decrease, and other histological data did not reveal any effects of estrogen. These results indicate that estrogen may show limited effectiveness for full-thickness cutaneous wound healing in young male mice, and decreased inflammation may not always be associated with decreased wound area

Water Electrolysis by the Direct Water Supply to the Solid Polymer Electrolyte through the Interdigitated Structure of the Electrode

    No full text
Water electrolysis cell in which the product gases was separated from liquid water on the surface of the electrode was developed. In order to realize the separation between gas and water, interdigitated diffusion layer (GDL) was designed, and the surface of the GDL was covered by catalyst to form electrode. When the pressurized water was supplied, the water directly made a contact to the proton conductive membrane. Due to the hydrophobic surface condition of the GDLs, gas/water separation along the surface of the electrode was completed

Effect of Pemafibrate on Hemorheology in Patients with Hypertriglyceridemia and Aggravated Blood Fluidity Associated with Type 2 Diabetes or Metabolic Syndrome

Persistent high serum triglyceride (TG) and free fatty acid (FFA) levels, which are common in metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes, are risk factors for cardiovascular events because of exacerbated hemorheology. To explore the effects of pemafibrate, a selective peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha modulator, on hemorheology, we performed a single-center, nonrandomized, controlled study in patients with type 2 diabetes (HbA1c 6–10%) or metabolic syndrome, with fasting TG levels of ≥ 150 mg/dL and a whole blood transit time of > 45 s on a microarray channel flow analyzer (MCFAN). Patients were divided into a study group, receiving 0.2 mg/day of pemafibrate (n = 50) for 16 weeks, and a non-pemafibrate control group (n = 46). Blood samples were drawn 8 and 16 weeks after entry to the study to evaluate whole blood transit time as a hemorheological parameter, leukocyte activity by MCFAN, and serum FFA levels. No serious adverse events were observed in either of the groups. After 16 weeks, the pemafibrate group showed a 38.6% reduction in triglycerides and a 50.7% reduction in remnant lipoproteins. Pemafibrate treatment did not significantly improve whole blood rheology or leukocyte activity in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus or metabolic syndrome complicated by hypertriglyceridemia and exacerbated hemorheology
