Traditional graphical user interfaces still adhere to concepts developed by Xerox in 1973. Windows, Icons, Menus, Pointers and the Desktop are all ubiquitous elements in any modern graphical user interface. However, the desktop metaphor has outlived its usefulness, screen space is an ever-decreasing resource, and users are forced to conform to the allowable interactions defined by the user interface. Clearly, the design of traditional user interfaces is losing relevance in the modern world. This project proposes ViewPoint as a prototype that directly addresses the issues surrounding traditional user interfaces. ViewPoint supports systems built with the Naked Objects framework, where the core business objects are exposed directly to the user through an automatically generated interface. These systems are expressive in nature as users can directly map their modes of thinking onto their interactions with the system. ViewPoint provides a zoomable user interface for Naked Objects using the Jazz Toolkit. These types of interfaces embody an infinite amount of space which is traversed through zooming and panning actions. ViewPoint has merged expressive systems with zoomable environments to give rise to the new and more powerful metaphor of the physical world. Ultimately, ViewPoint is a step forward in the direction of a new generation of user interfaces. 1 Originality Declaration This report is my unaided work and was neither copied from nor written in collaboration with any other person.
