Theory of quantum dot spin-lasers
We formulate a model of a semiconductor Quantum Dot laser with injection of
spin-polarized electrons. As compared to higher-dimensionality structures, the
Quantum-Dot-based active region is known to improve laser properties, including
the spin-related ones. The wetting layer, from which carriers are captured into
the active region, acts as an intermediate level that strongly influences the
lasing operation. The finite capture rate leads to an increase of lasing
thresholds, and to saturation of emitted light at higher injection. In spite of
these issues, the advantageous threshold reduction, resulting from spin
injection, can be preserved. The "spin-filtering" effect, i.e., circularly
polarized emission at even modest spin-polarization of injection, remains
present as well. Our rate-equations description allows to obtain analytical
results and provides transparent guidance for improvement of spin-lasers.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure
Longitudinal Momentum Fraction X_L for Two High P_t Protons in pp->ppX Reaction
We present an analysis of new data from Experiment E850 at BNL. We have
characterized the inclusive cross section near the endpoint for pp exclusive
scattering in Hydrogen and in Carbon with incident beam energy of 6 GeV. We
select events with a pair of back-to-back hadrons at large transverse momentum.
These cross sections are parameterized with a form
, where is the ratio of the longitudinal momentum
of the observed pair to the total incident beam momentum. Small value of
may suggest that the number of partons participating in the reaction is large
and reaction has a strong dependence on the center-of-mass energy. We also
discuss nuclear effects observed in our kinematic region.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, to be published in Proceedings of CIPANP2000,

Diode lasers with asymmetric barriers for 850 nm spectral range: experimental studies of power characteristics
It is demonstrated that the use of asymmetric barrier layers in a waveguide of a diode laser suppress non-linearity of light-current characteristic and thus improve its power characteristics under high current injection. The results are presented for 850-nm AlGaAs/GaAs broad-area lasers with GaInP and AlInGaAs asymmetric barriers.Published versio
Positive Feedback Improves Students’ Psychological and Physical Learning Outcomes
Abstract. Positive feedback is one of the core strategies used to make educational environment and students’ learning outcomes better. This review aims at revealing the role of positive feedback in improving students’ psychological and physical learning outcomes. Meanwhile, it questions the efficiency of combining positive and negative feedbacks in order to provide better educational experience for students. The findings of the analysis reveal that there is positive relationship between positive feedback and students’ physical and psychological learning outcomes. More specifically, positive feedback is advantageous in increasing students’ motivation, confidence, self-efficacy and academic skills. Furthermore, the study also confirms the benefits of combining positive and negative feedbacks in order to improve students’ learning outcomes and advance their academic skills
Energy Dependence of Nuclear Transparency in C(p,2p) Scattering
The transparency of carbon for (p,2p) quasi-elastic events was measured at
beam energies ranging from 6 to 14.5 GeV at 90 degrees c.m. The four momentum
transfer squared q*q ranged from 4.8 to 16.9 (GeV/c)**2. We present the
observed energy dependence of the ratio of the carbon to hydrogen cross
sections. We also apply a model for the nuclear momentum distribution of carbon
to normalize this transparency ratio. We find a sharp rise in transparency as
the beam energy is increased to 9 GeV and a reduction to approximately the
Glauber level at higher energies.Comment: 4 pages, 2figures, submitted to PR
