Advertising play a vital role in this era, it a tool to promote and to place a product or services in the mind of customers so this study basically focuses on how ads raise competition among luxury fashion brands and what is the effect of advertisement on competition that are being raised through the advent of media and to examine a relationship between dependent and independent variables with the help of three factors that are being drive through independent variable (advertising are compressed as the source of information , media and the frequency of ads) what are the contribution of all factors to increase competition among fashion brands .The research shows that the source of information (Newspaper, Billboards, Internet and Television) is the basic reason to increase competition among fashion brands in Karachi

Objective: To study the effects of malaria on pregnancy outcome. Methods: A case control study conducted on patients identified by ICD-9 coding system of the hospital medical records. Demographic and clinical data recorded on standardized data sheet and analyzed using SPSS 11.5 software. Results: Of the total patients, 67.4% were multigravid and 32.6% were primigravid with 78.6% of patients having platelets \u3c 150,000. Mean haemoglobin was 9.4 gm/dl in patients and 12.2 gm/dl in controls. Plasmodium Vivax was accounted for 55.8%, P. Falciparum for 41.9%, and P. Ovale 2.3% of infections. In all, 48.8% of patients received oral Chloroquine, 16.3% oral Quinine, 30.3% intravenous Quinine, 20.9% of patients received combination treatment with IV Clindamycin, and one each patient received oral Artemether or oral halofantrine. Two patients had an abortion. One of the following complications including, threatened abortion, preterm labour, ARDS or Cerebral malaria, was observed in one patient each. Mean weight of babies born to cases was 2.8 kg (range 1.4-3.8) and of control babies was 3.2 kg (range 2.5-4.0 kg). No congenital malformations were reported.CONCLUSION: Plasmodium falciparum sp, moderate parasitic load, haemoglobin \u3c 10 gm/dL, platelet count \u3c 50,000/mm3 and IV quinine with loading dose of 20 mg/kg are identified as few of the potential risk factors for poor outcome in pregnancy

Uterine artery embolization combined with methotrexate for broad ligament ectopic pregnancy in a 30-year old primigravida

We present the case of 30-year old primigravida female at 11 weeks\u27 gestation who was diagnosed to have ectopic pregnancy on obstetric ultrasound. An MRI pelvis was ordered to assess invasion into the posterior myometrium which confirmed a single right-sided broad ligament-extra uterine pelvic ectopic pregnancy with extrinsic mass effect on the right lower uterine segment without frank myometrial invasion. On an urgent basis, a uterine artery embolization (UAE) was performed by targeting the right femoral artery. Selective catheterization was performed of both uterine arteries and the right side showed a major feeder of the gestational sac. Supplied dose of methotrexate (95mg) was infused in the right uterine artery and both arteries were then embolized by gel foam slurry. Thus, prompt treatment reduced the risk of infertility and saved the patient from obstetrical emergency. Further exploration needs to be done in this field to explore conservative management options to preserve fertility

Experiences, attitudes and barriers towards research amongst junior faculty of Pakistani medical universities

Abstract

Background

The developing world has had limited quality research and in Pakistan, research is still in its infancy. We conducted a study to assess the proportion of junior faculty involved in research to highlight their attitude towards research, and identify the factors associated with their research involvement.

Methods

A cross-sectional study was conducted in four medical universities/teaching hospitals in Pakistan, representing private and public sectors. A pre-tested, self-administered questionnaire was used to collect information from 176 junior faculty members of studied universities/hospitals. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors related to attitudes and barriers in research among those currently involved in research with those who were not.

Results

Overall, 41.5% of study subjects were currently involved in research. A highly significant factor associated with current research involvement was research training during the post-graduate period (p < 0.001). Other factors associated with current involvement in research were male gender, working in the public sector and previous involvement in research. Overall, a large majority (85.2%) of doctors considered research helpful in their profession and had a positive attitude towards research; nevertheless this positive attitude was more frequently reported by doctors who were currently involved in research compared to those who were not (OR = 4.69; 95% CI = 1.54-14.26). Similarly, a large proportion (83.5%) of doctors considered research difficult to conduct; higher by doctors who were not presently involved in research (OR = 2.74; 95% CI = 1.20-6.22)

Conclusion

Less than half of the study participants were currently involved in research. Research output may improve if identified barriers are rectified. Further studies are recommended in this area.</p

Hybridization of green synthesized silver nanoparticles with poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate and their biomedical applications

In the present research, a rapid, simple and efficient green method is used for the incorporation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) into poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (PEGMA) to create biocatalysts with excellent properties for pharmaceutical purpose. In the first phase, Caralluma tuberculata capped AgNPs (Ca-AgNPs) were prepared using green synthetic approach and in the second phase Caralluma tuberculata capped AgNPs were hybridized with poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate to form PEGMA-AgNPs. Both the virgin (naked or uncapped) and polymer-capped materials were characterized spectroscopically and their results were compared. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed no new peak after the capping procedure, showing that only physical interactions takes place during capping. After PEGMA capping, the spectra of the AgNPs red shifted (from 450 nm to 520 nm) and the overall particle size of AgNPs increased. Catalytic activity of the nanoparticles and hybrid system were tested by choosing the catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) as a model reaction. Both synthesized NPs and polymer capped NPs exhibits catalytic activity for the reduction of 4-NP to 4-aminophenol. The polymer hybrid exhibits remarkable antiproliferative, antioxidant, cytotoxic, antidiabetic and antileishmanial activities
