    Search for Dark Matter with LHC proton Beam Dump

    Dark Matter (DM) comprising particles in the mass range of a few MeV to GeV is waiting to be explored, given the many theoretical models accommodating cosmological abundance. We hereby propose an experiment with the LHC proton beam of 7 TeV striking onto the beam dump target, emitting neutrinos and possibly, Dark Matter candidates. This experiment would also permit to observe signatures involving elastic and inelastic processes involving DM candidates, electrons and strongly interacting particles present in nuclei of the dump target. There will be residual neutrino background present in each of these signatures, hence the proposed experimental detector sub-systems would be such that they would involve as final states, elastically or inelasticity scattered, standard model particles. The bump or the excess in the tail of the kinematic distributions will eventually give us glimpse of presence of new particles which could possibly be Dark Matter candidates. Given the parameters of the LHC machine, the sensitivity of such an experiment is unique in the energy region it is supposed to exploit

    Is the cyclic prefix necessary?

    We show that one can do away with the cyclic prefix (CP) for SC-FDE and OFDM at the cost of a moderate increase in the complexity of a DFT-based receiver. Such an approach effectively deals with the decrease in the number of channel uses due to the introduction of the CP. It is shown that the SINR for SC-FDE remains the same asymptotically with the proposed receiver without CP as that of the conventional receiver with CP. The results are shown for NtN_t transmit antennas and NrN_r receive antennas where Nr≥NtN_r \geq N_t.Comment: 12 pages, 1 figure.     A Distributed Scheduling Algorithm to Provide Quality-of-Service in Multihop Wireless Networks

    Control of multihop Wireless networks in a distributed manner while providing end-to-end delay requirements for different flows, is a challenging problem. Using the notions of Draining Time and Discrete Review from the theory of fluid limits of queues, an algorithm that meets delay requirements to various flows in a network is constructed. The algorithm involves an optimization which is implemented in a cyclic distributed manner across nodes by using the technique of iterative gradient ascent, with minimal information exchange between nodes. The algorithm uses time varying weights to give priority to flows. The performance of the algorithm is studied in a network with interference modelled by independent sets

    Structure Prediction and Functional Characterization of ERG Proteins Involved in Ergosterol Biosynthetic Pathway of Candida albicans

    The ERG proteins and enzymes of the ergosterol biosynthetic pathway has been the subject of intensive investigation as a target for several classes of antifungal agents used to treat C. albicans infection. Over the past few decades, a number of drugs and inhibitors with wide spectrum of activity, low toxicity and defined targets have been introduced. Several lines of evidence suggest that allylamines targets squalene epoxidase (ERG1), morpholines affects sterol C8-C7 isomerase (ERG2) and sterol reductase (ERG24), azoles inhibits a cytochrome P450 (ERG11) responsible for the 14 α-demethylation of lanosterol and C-5 sterol desaturase (ERG3) and polyenes binds to ergosterol that leads to the damage of cell plasma membrane, ensuing in leakage of intracellular ions. However, little information about the experimental structure (X-ray and NMR) of proteins from ergosterol biosynthetic pathway is available in RCSB Protein Databank (PDB). Since ERG proteins play a key role in metabolic pathway of ergosterol, their 3D structures are essential to determine most of their functions. Homology modeling approach was employed for comparative modeling. Modeller 9v7 and I-Tasser programs were utilized to serve our purpose. The modeled proteins were further validated by Procheck, Verify-3D, ERRAT and PROVE servers. Expasy’s Prot-param server and Cys_rec tool was used for physico-chemical and functional characterization of these proteins. Studies of secondary structure of these proteins were carried out using computational program, Profunc. Swiss-pdb viewer was used to visualize and analyze homology derived structures. The modeled structures of 12 ERG proteins have been submitted and are available in Protein Model Database (PMDB) so that they become accessible to other users for further studies

    Trade liberalization, market reforms and competitiveness of Indian dairy sector

    From chronic shortages of milk, India has emerged today as the largest producer of milk in the world crossing 80 million tonnes. This has been achieved largely through a smallholder economy in which "Operation Flood", one of the world's largest dairy development programmes, played an important role. All this happened largely under autarkic framework and regulated public policy dictated by import-substitution strategy. Until 1991, the Indian dairy industry was highly regulated and protected through quantitative restrictions (QRs) and stringent licensing provisions. Since early 1990s, India embarked upon liberal policy framework, which got reinforced with the signing of Uruguay Round Agreement on Agriculture (URAA) in 1994. This opening-up increasingly exposed the Indian dairy sector to the global markets, which in-turn are distorted by export subsidies, domestic support and prohibitive tariffs in developed countries. This raises several issues: Will the Indian dairy sector survive in the new brave world of liberalization? What are the options for India in the coming rounds of multilateral trade negotiations, given scores of distortions that plague the world dairy markets? What sort of domestic reforms are required in the Indian dairy sector that could promote its competitiveness in a fast globalizing world? This study responds to these issues by empirically mapping the competitiveness of Indian dairy sector over the period 1975-2000 and delineating policy options for international negotiations and more importantly, domestic policy reforms, given India's commitments to the WTO.World Trade Organization ,trade liberalization ,Dairy products industry ,livestock ,

    In silico comparative analysis of conserved genes expressed in solanaceous plants under abiotic stresses

    The gene expression data was studied in order to analyze genes involved in different abiotic stresses in solanaceous plants. Salt, temperature (heat & cold) and drought are the main abiotic stresses to the plants. Abiotic stress responses are important for sessile organisms like plants because they have to cope with environmental changes to survive. The idea was to analyze those differentially expressed genes, which show common expression in response to different abiotic stress conditions in each plant. Mitogen activated protein kinases (MAPK) are important mediators in signal transmission, connecting the perception of external stimuli to cellular responses. In plants, MAPKs plays a major role in the signaling of abiotic stresses. The expression data were retrieved from gene expression omnibus (GEO) database at NCBI. The set of genes were selected showing up or down regulation in at least two abiotic stresses. These genes were used for searching their involvement in different steps of MAP kinase pathway. Our findings suggest that a common set of genes are the key players in signaling pathway responsible for initiation of cascade of reaction in response to stress. The study will help to understand how the conserved genes are expressing differentially in response to various abiotic stresses. The common genes affecting the MAP kinase pathway might be highly conserved. These genes may be used to study the response of different abiotic stresses in other plant species

    On the Performance of Multiple Antenna Cooperative Spectrum Sharing Protocol under Nakagami-m Fading

    In a cooperative spectrum sharing (CSS) protocol, two wireless systems operate over the same frequency band albeit with different priorities. The secondary (or cognitive) system which has a lower priority, helps the higher priority primary system to achieve its target rate by acting as a relay and allocating a fraction of its power to forward the primary signal. The secondary system in return is benefited by transmitting its own data on primary system's spectrum. In this paper, we have analyzed the performance of multiple antenna cooperative spectrum sharing protocol under Nakagami-m Fading. Closed form expressions for outage probability have been obtained by varying the parameters m and Omega of the Nakagami-m fading channels. Apart from above, we have shown the impact of power allocation factor (alpha) and parameter m on the region of secondary spectrum access, conventionally defined as critical radius for the secondary system.
