    A Secret of Hypnosis: A Dynamic Rubber Hand Illusion

    Presenting a suggestion of heaviness to a person in a hypnotic trance (e.g., "your arm is getting heavier and heavier") tends to result in a corresponding change in the person's body position (e.g., the arm lowers). This phenomenon may be a result of activation of the mirror neuron system, which leads the subject to anticipate actual weight on the arm. The mirror system underlies people's ability to sense, in the absence of actual sensory input, experiences of other people. Perhaps this system allows the same anticipatory experience regarding non-human objects. In this study, we showed participants a picture of a rubber hand holding what appeared to be a lightweight rubber ball. In reality, the ball was weighted with sand. We instructed participants to move their arms to a horizontal position and hold them immobile. Those participants who knew the actual weight of the ball tended to raise their arms above the horizontal, perhaps in response to their expectation of the need to resist the weight of the ball. This illusional phenomenon might be similar to that induced by the hypnotic suggestion of heaviness. That is, the body's response may reflect activity in the mirror system, which anticipates greater weight

    Two Agents in the Brain: Motor Control of Unimanual and Bimanual Reaching Movements

    Previous studies have suggested that the left and right hands have different specialties for motor control that can be represented as two agents in the brain. This study examined how coordinated movements are performed during bimanual reaching tasks to highlight differences in the characteristics of the hands. We examined motor movement accuracy, reaction time, and movement time in right-handed subjects performing a three-dimensional motor control task (visually guided reaching). In the no-visual-feedback condition, right-hand movement had lower accuracy and a shorter reaction time than did left-hand movement, whereas bimanual movement had the longest reaction time, but the best accuracy. This suggests that the two hands have different internal models and specialties: closed-loop control for the right hand and open-loop control for the left hand. Consequently, during bimanual movements, both models might be used, creating better control and planning (or prediction), but requiring more computation time compared to the use of one hand only

    Endovascular Stent-Graft Placement for Vascular Failure of the Thoracic Aorta

    It still remains undetermined whether endovascular stent-graft placement (ESGP) is the optimal initial treatment for elective cases of thoracic aortic disease because of unknown long-term results. However, it is also recognized that ESGP contributes to better outcome as an initial treatment for aortic emergency, such as rupture, aortic injury, and complicated acute type B aortic dissection. Despite the fact that most patients are elderly, early mortality rates of ESGP are reportedly around 10% in cases of ruptured degenerative thoracic aortic aneurysm. Postoperative morbidity is also superior in ESGP compared with conventional open repair. Postoperative paraplegia has rarely occurred with ESGP. In cases of blunt aortic injury (BAI), other complications may also be present because of other serious injuries. ESGP has changed the surgical strategy for BAI and partially resolved some of the clinical dilemmas. Early mortality rate is almost zero when a stent graft can be placed before re-rupture. While BAI is a very good indication for ESGP, young patients need careful management and attention because of the unknown long-term outcome. In cases of complicated acute type B aortic dissection, the two main determinants of death, shock from rupture and visceral ischemia, could be managed by ESGP with or without conventional endovascular interventions. Recent reports disclosed less than 10% early mortality with ESGP for complicated acute aortic dissection. Even if the possibility of endotension remains, ESPG seems to be beneficial for these critical patients as the preferable initial treatment. The importance of close follow-up should be stressed to avoid some devastating late complications following ESGP

    Dusty ERO Search behind Two Massive Clusters

    We performed deep K'-band imaging observations of 2 massive clusters, MS 0451.6-0305 at z = 0.55 and MS 0440.5+0204 at z = 0.19, for searching counterparts of the faint sub-mm sources behind these clusters, which would provide one of the deepest extremely red object(ERO) samples. Comparing our near-infrared images with optical images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope and by the Subaru Telescope, we identified 13 EROs in these fields. The sky distributions of EROs are consistent with the previous results, that there is a sign of strong clustering among detected EROs. Also, the surface density with corrected lensing amplification factors in both clusters are in good agreement with that derived from previous surveys. We found 7 EROs and 3 additional very red objects in a small area (\sim 0.6 arcmin^2) of the MS 0451.6-0305 field around an extended SCUBA source. Many of their optical and near-infrared colors are consistent with dusty star-forming galaxies at high redshifts(z \sim 1.0-4.0), and they may be constituting a cluster of dusty starburst galaxies and/or lensed star-forming galaxies at high redshift. Their red J-K' colors and faint optical magnitudes suggest they are relatively old massive stellar systems with ages(>300 Mega years) suffering from dust obscuration. We also found a surface-density enhancement of EROs around the SCUBA source in the MS 0440.5+0204 field.Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, Latex(using pasj00.cls).     Hypercalciuria is one of the early manifestations of diabetic nephropathy. We explored here the role of α-Klotho, a protein expressed predominantly in distal convoluted tubules that has a role in calcium reabsorption. We studied 31 patients with early diabetic nephropathy and compared them with 31 patients with IgA nephropathy and 7 with minimal change disease. Renal α-Klotho expression was significantly lower and urinary calcium excretion (UCa/UCr) significantly higher in diabetic nephropathy than in IgA nephropathy or minimal change disease. Multiple regression analyses indicated that α-Klotho mRNA was inversely correlated with calcium excretion. We next measured these parameters in a mouse model of streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic nephropathy, characterized by glomerular hyperfiltration, as seen in early diabetic nephropathy. We also confirmed a reduction of renal α-Klotho mRNA down to almost 50% and enhanced calcium excretion in mice with STZ-induced diabetic nephropathy in comparison with nondiabetic mice. Hypercalciuria was exacerbated in heterozygous α-Klotho knockout mice in comparison with wild-type mice, each with STZ-induced diabetic nephropathy. Thus, α-Klotho expression was decreased in distal convoluted tubules in diabetic nephropathy in humans and mice.     Decomposition of the Superwind in M82

    We present new optical images (BB, VV, and Hα\alpha) of the archetypical starburst/superwind galaxy M82 obtained with the 8.2 m Subaru Telescope to reveal new detailed structures of the superwind-driven nebula and the high-latitude dark lanes. The emission-line nebula is decomposed into (1) a ridge-dominated component comprising numerous filament/loop sub-structures whose overall morphology appears as a pair of narrow cylinders, and (2) a diffuse component extended over much wider opening angle from the nucleus. We suggest that these two components have different origins. The ridge-dominated component appears as a pair of cylinders rather than a pair of cones. Since this morphological property is similar to that of hot plasma probed by soft X-ray, this component seems to surround the hot plasma. On the other hand, the diffuse component may arise from dust grains which scatter stellar light from the galaxy. Since inner region of this component is seen over the prominent ^^ ^^ X"-shaped dark lanes streaming out from the nuclear region and they can be reproduced as a conical distribution of dust grains, there seems to be a dusty cold outflow as well as the hot one probed by soft X-ray and shock-excited optical emission lines. If this is the case, the presence of such high-latitude dust grains implies that neutral gaseous matter is also blown out during the course of the superwind activity.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures.
