Multivariate analysis of genetic divergence in Eu sorghums

    Get PDF
A study of the nature of genetic divergence in Sorghum by multivariate analysis was undertaken to examine the nature of differentiation within this genus and to improve the existing criteria of its classification. Forty-six populations of Eu-Sorghum representing its different series and sub-series were selected. Based on Mahalanobis D2-statistic, the population could be grouped into 15 clusters. The spatial disposition of the clusters and their relative divergence was in broad agreement with that of Snowden in seven clusters, but only in partial agreement in the other cases with the phylogenetic relations indicated by him. The grouping was confirmed by canonical analysis. After a comparison of the present results with those reported by others, the sub-genus Eu-Sorghum could be divided into nine species

Comparative shoot regeneration in diploid and amphidiploid Brassica species and their interspecific hybrids

    Get PDF
Shoot regeneration response in interspecific hybrids of Brassica species were assessed in relation to the diploid pollen parents and amphidiploid female parents. Superior regeneration responses were observed in interspecific combinations of B. carinata and B. nigra (BBC), B. juncea and B. campestris (AAB), and B. napus and B. campestris (AAC). Though synthetic B. napus regenerated with a frequency less than that of the better regenerating parent (B. oleracea), higher regeneration response was observed in the hybrid between B. napus and B. campestris. Two triploid combinations of the genetic constitution ABC, one obtained by crossing synthetic B. napus with B. nigra and the other by crossing natural B. juncea with B. oleracea, showed low regeneration responses. The response improved substantially in a tetraploid of the constitution ABBC obtained by crossing B. juncea with B. carinata. Key words: Brassica, alloploids, shoot regeneration

Genotype dependent response to Azospirillum treatment in yield and nitrogenase activity in Brassica juncea L.

    Get PDF
Twelve advanced lines of mustard (Brassica juncea L.) were evaluated for response to treatment with Azospirillum brasilense in yield and a few components. Two lines gave yield increases with concomitant increases in nitrogenase activity and Azospirillum population. In general, there were desirable and significant correlations between plot yield, nitrogenase activity and log, (Azospirillum population). The results point to the possibility of utilizing genotype-dependent response to Azospirillum in breeding programmes and also for exploring new avenues of Azospirillum-based cultural practices in sustaining improved productivity
