    Integrating Biological Advances Into the Clinical Management of Breast Cancer Related Lymphedema

    Breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) occurs in a significant number of breast cancer survivors as a consequence of the axillary lymphatics' impairment after therapy (mainly axillary surgery and irradiation). Despite the recent achievements in the clinical management of these patients, BCRL is often diagnosed at its occurrence. In most cases, it remains a progressive and irreversible condition, with dramatic consequences in terms of quality of life and on sanitary costs. There are still no validated pre-surgical strategies to identify individuals that harbor an increased risk of BCRL. However, clinical, therapeutic, and tumor-specific traits are recurrent in these patients. Over the past few years, many studies have unraveled the complexity of the molecular and transcriptional events leading to the lymphatic system ontogenesis. Additionally, molecular insights are coming from the study of the germline alterations involved at variable levels in BCRL models. Regrettably, there is a substantial lack of predictive biomarkers for BCRL, given that our knowledge of its molecular milieu remains extremely puzzled. The purposes of this review were (i) to outline the biology underpinning the ontogenesis of the lymphatic system; (ii) to assess the current state of knowledge of the molecular alterations that can be involved in BCRL pathogenesis and progression; (iii) to discuss the present and short-term future perspectives in biomarker-based patients' risk stratification; and (iv) to provide practical information that can be employed to improve the quality of life of these patients

    β-thalassemia Intermedia In A Brazilian Patient With - 101 (c > T) And Codon 39 (c > T) Mutations

    Context: We verified molecular alterations in a 72-year-old Brazilian male patient with a clinical course of homozygous β-thalassemia intermedia, who had undergone splenectomy and was surviving without regular blood transfusions. The blood cell count revealed microcytic and hypochromic anemia (hemoglobin = 6.5 g/dl, mean cell volume = 74 ft, mean cell hemoglobin = 24 pg) and hemoglobin electrophoresis showed fetal hemoglobin = 1.3%, hemoglobin A 2 = 6.78% and hemoglobin A = 79.4%. Objective: To identify mutations in a patient with the symptoms of β-thalassemia intermedia. Design: Molecular inquiry into the mutations possibly responsible for the clinical picture described. Setting: The structural molecular biology and genetic engineering center of the Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Campinas, Brazil. Procedures: DNA extraction was performed on the patient's blood samples. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was done using five specific primers that amplified exons and the promoter region of the β globin gene. The samples were sequenced and then analyzed via computer programs. Results: Two mutations that cause the disease were found: -101 (C > T) and codon 39 (C > T).     A prototype of the AMS Cherenkov imager (RICH) has been tested at CERN by means of a low intensity 20 GeV/c per nucleon ion beam obtained by fragmentation of a primary beam of Pb ions. Data have been collected with a single beam setting, over the range of nuclear charges 2<Z<~45 in various beam conditions and using different radiators.     The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) experiment to be installed on the International Space Station (ISS) will be equipped with a proximity focusing Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detector for measuring the electric charge and velocity of the charged cosmic particles. A RICH prototype consisting of 96 photomultiplier units, including a piece of the conical reflector, was built and its performance evaluated with ion beam data. Preliminary results of the in-beam tests performed with ion fragments resulting from collisions of a 158 GeV/c/nuc primary beam of Indium ions (CERN SPS) on a Pb target are reported. The collected data included tests to the final front-end electronics and to different aerogel radiators. Cherenkov rings for a large range of charged nuclei and with reflected photons were observed. The data analysis confirms the design goals.     A região do Cerrado representa uma das maiores áreas cultivada do mundo. Os diferentes usos do solo empregados nesta região podem modificar efetivamente as quantidade de matéria orgânica e alterar a ciclagem dos nutrientes no solo. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os estoques totais de carbono (COT) e nitrogênio (NT) e o índice de manejo de carbono (IMC) sob os sistemas plantio direto, plantio convencional e mata nativa em Latossolo Vermelho Amarelo no Cerrado do Piauí. O estudo foi realizado em Bom Jesus, Sudoeste do Piauí. Foram coletadas amostras de solo nas camadas de 0 cm -10 cm e 10 cm-20 cm, nos sistemas, plantio direto (PD) com duração de três anos (rotação milho-soja, em cobertura Brachiaria sp. + milheto), plantio convencional (PC) com duração de quatro anos (utilização de grade aradora e niveladora, rotação arroz-soja) e mata nativa (MN) área de cerrado não antrópica. Os maiores estoques de COT e NT foram observados no sistema PD tanto na profundidade de 0 cm-10 cm quanto de 10 cm-20 cm em comparação ao PC e MN. O Índice de Manejo de Carbono (IMC) foi maior para o PD nas duas profundidades em relação ao PC e MN. Práticas adequadas de manejo, que visam à manutenção ou mesmo acúmulo de carbono (C) no solo, podem atenuar os efeitos do aquecimento global
