From Isotopes to TK Interviews: Towards Interdisciplinary Research in Fort Resolution and the Slave River Delta, Northwest Territories
Evolving research in Fort Resolution and the Slave River Delta, Northwest Territories, aims to improve understanding of how the natural ecosystem functions and responds to various environmental stressors, as well as to enhance the stewardship of natural resources and the capacity of local residents to respond to change. We seek to integrate approaches that span the natural and social sciences and traditional knowledge understandings of change, employing a research design developed in response to the concerns of a northern community. In doing so, we have strived for a research process that is collaborative, interdisciplinary, policy-oriented, and reflective of northern priorities. These elements characterize the new northern research paradigm increasingly promoted by various federal funding agencies, northern partners, and communities. They represent a holistic perspective in the pursuit of solutions to address complex environmental and socioeconomic concerns about impacts of climate change and resource development on northern societies. However, efforts to fulfill the objectives of this research paradigm are associated with a host of on-the-ground challenges. These challenges include (but are not restricted to) developing effective community partnerships and collaboration and documenting change through interdisciplinary approaches. Here we provide an overview of the components that comprise our interdisciplinary research program and offer an accounting of our formative experiences in confronting these challenges
MHD Stellar and Disk Winds: Application to Planetary Nebulae
MHD winds can emanate from both stars and surrounding accretion disks. It is
of interest to know how much wind power is available and which (if either) of
the two rotators dominates that power. We investigate this in the context of
multi-polar planetary nebulae (PNe) and proto-planetary nebulae (PPNe), for
which recent observations have revealed the need for a wind power source in
excess of that available from radiation driving, and a possible need for
magnetic shaping. We calculate the MHD wind power from a coupled disk and star,
where the former results from binary disruption. The resulting wind powers
depend only on the accretion rate and stellar properties. We find that if the
stellar envelope were initially slowly rotating, the disk wind would dominate
throughout the evolution. If the envelope of the star were rapidly rotating,
the stellar wind could initially be of comparable power to the disk wind until
the stellar wind carries away the star's angular momentum. Since an initially
rapidly rotating star can have its spin and magnetic axes misaligned to the
disk, multi-polar outflows can result from this disk wind system. For times
greater than a spin-down time, the post-AGB stellar wind is slaved to the disk
for both slow and rapid initial spin cases and the disk wind luminosity
dominates. We find a reasonably large parameter space where a hybrid star+disk
MHD driven wind is plausible and where both or either can account for PPNe and
PNe powers. We also speculate on the morphologies which may emerge from the
coupled system. The coupled winds might help explain the shapes of a number of
remarkable multi-shell or multi-polar nebulae. Magnetic activity such as X-ray
flares may be associated with the both central star and the disk and would be a
valuable diagnostic for the dynamical role of MHD processes in PNe.Comment: ApJ accepted version, incorporating some important revisions. 25

Nous cherchons également à employer une méthodologie respectueuse des inquiétudes de la collectivité du Nord. Ce faisant, nous avons abouti à un processus de recherche caractérisé par la collaboration, l’interdisciplinarité et les politiques, processus qui tient également compte des priorités dans le Nord. Ces éléments définissent le nouveau paradigme de recherche dans le Nord qui est de plus en plus préconisé par divers organismes de subvention fédéraux, partenaires du Nord et collectivités. Ils représentent une perspective holistique en guise de solutions à des enjeux environnementaux et socioéconomiques complexes portant sur les incidences du changement climatique et de l’exploitation des ressources sur les sociétés du Nord. Toutefois, les efforts visant à concrétiser les objectifs de ce paradigme de recherche font face à une multitude de défis. Ces défis comprennent (mais sans s’y restreindre) la formation de partenariats efficaces avec les collectivités, des efforts de collaboration et la prise de notes sur les changements qui s’opèrent grâce à des méthodes interdisciplinaires. Introduction: approaching space in intellectual history
This article serves as an introduction to the special issue on Conceptions of Space in Intellectual History. It opens with a brief inquiry into the place of ‘space’, both as a topic and as an analytical lens, in the field of intellectual history. The remainder of the introduction suggests a pathway through the special issue. Identification of a Wide, Low-Mass Multiple System Containing the Brown Dwarf 2MASS J0850359+105716
We report our discovery of NLTT 20346 as an M5+M6 companion system to the
tight binary (or triple) L dwarf 2MASS J0850359+105716. This nearby (~31 pc),
widely separated (~7700 AU) quadruple system was identified through a
cross-match of proper motion catalogs. Follow-up imaging and spectroscopy of
NLTT 20346 revealed it to be a magnetically active M5+M6 binary with components
separated by ~2" (50-80 AU). Optical spectroscopy of the components show only
moderate Halpha emission corresponding to a statistical age of ~5 - 7 Gyr for
both M dwarfs. However NLTT 20346 is associated with the XMM-Newton source
J085018.9+105644, and based on X-ray activity the age of NLTT 20346 is between
250-450 Myr. Strong Li absorption in the optical spectrum of 2MASS J0850+1057
indicates an upper age limit of 0.8 - 1.5 Gyr favoring the younger age for the
primary. Using evolutionary models in combination with an adopted system age of
0.25-1.5 Gyr indicates a total mass for 2MASS J0850+1057 of 0.07+/-0.02 Msun if
it is a binary. NLTT 20346/2MASS J0850+1057 joins a growing list of
hierarchical systems containing brown dwarf binaries and is among the lowest
binding energy associations found in the field. Formation simulations via
gravitational fragmentation of massive extended disks have successfully

The response of perennial and temporary headwater stream invertebrate communities to hydrological extremes
The headwaters of karst rivers experience considerable hydrological variability, including spates and streambed drying. Extreme summer flooding on the River Lathkill (Derbyshire, UK) provided the opportunity to examine the invertebrate community response to unseasonal spate flows, flow recession and, at temporary sites, streambed drying. Invertebrates were sampled at sites with differing flow permanence regimes during and after the spates. Following streambed drying at temporary sites, dewatered surface sediments were investigated as a refugium for aquatic invertebrates. Experimental rehydration of these dewatered sediments was conducted to promote development of desiccation-tolerant life stages. At perennial sites, spate flows reduced invertebrate abundance and diversity, whilst at temporary sites, flow reactivation facilitated rapid colonisation of the surface channel by a limited number of invertebrate taxa. Following streambed drying, 38 taxa were recorded from the dewatered and rehydrated sediments, with Oligochaeta being the most abundant taxon and Chironomidae (Diptera) the most diverse. Experimental rehydration of dewatered sediments revealed the presence of additional taxa, including Stenophylax sp. (Trichoptera: Limnephilidae) and Nemoura sp. (Plecoptera: Nemouridae). Efficiency and safety of varying the frequency of whole blood donation (INTERVAL): a randomised trial of 45 000 donors
Background:
Limits on the frequency of whole blood donation exist primarily to safeguard donor health. However, there is substantial variation across blood services in the maximum frequency of donations allowed. We compared standard practice in the UK with shorter inter-donation intervals used in other countries.
Methods:
In this parallel group, pragmatic, randomised trial, we recruited whole blood donors aged 18 years or older from 25 centres across England, UK. By use of a computer-based algorithm, men were randomly assigned (1:1:1) to 12-week (standard) versus 10-week versus 8-week inter-donation intervals, and women were randomly assigned (1:1:1) to 16-week (standard) versus 14-week versus 12-week intervals. Participants were not masked to their allocated intervention group. The primary outcome was the number of donations over 2 years. Secondary outcomes related to safety were quality of life, symptoms potentially related to donation, physical activity, cognitive function, haemoglobin and ferritin concentrations, and deferrals because of low haemoglobin. This trial is registered with ISRCTN, number ISRCTN24760606, and is ongoing but no longer recruiting participants.
Findings:
45 263 whole blood donors (22 466 men, 22 797 women) were recruited between June 11, 2012, and June 15, 2014. Data were analysed for 45 042 (99·5%) participants. Men were randomly assigned to the 12-week (n=7452) versus 10-week (n=7449) versus 8-week (n=7456) groups; and women to the 16-week (n=7550) versus 14-week (n=7567) versus 12-week (n=7568) groups. In men, compared with the 12-week group, the mean amount of blood collected per donor over 2 years increased by 1·69 units (95% CI 1·59–1·80; approximately 795 mL) in the 8-week group and by 0·79 units (0·69–0·88; approximately 370 mL) in the 10-week group (p<0·0001 for both). In women, compared with the 16-week group, it increased by 0·84 units (95% CI 0·76–0·91; approximately 395 mL) in the 12-week group and by 0·46 units (0·39–0·53; approximately 215 mL) in the 14-week group (p<0·0001 for both). No significant differences were observed in quality of life, physical activity, or cognitive function across randomised groups. However, more frequent donation resulted in more donation-related symptoms (eg, tiredness, breathlessness, feeling faint, dizziness, and restless legs, especially among men [for all listed symptoms]), lower mean haemoglobin and ferritin concentrations, and more deferrals for low haemoglobin (p<0·0001 for each) than those observed in the standard frequency groups.
Interpretation:
Over 2 years, more frequent donation than is standard practice in the UK collected substantially more blood without having a major effect on donors' quality of life, physical activity, or cognitive function, but resulted in more donation-related symptoms, deferrals, and iron deficiency.

Estimation of Seasonal Influenza Attack Rates and Antibody Dynamics in Children Using Cross-Sectional Serological Data.
Directly measuring evidence of influenza infections is difficult, especially in low-surveillance settings such as sub-Saharan Africa. Using a Bayesian model, we estimated unobserved infection times and underlying antibody responses to influenza A/H3N2, using cross-sectional serum antibody responses to 4 strains in children aged 24-60 months. Among the 242 individuals, we estimated a variable seasonal attack rate and found that most children had ≥1 infection before 2 years of age. Our results are consistent with previously published high attack rates in children. The modeling approach highlights how cross-sectional serological data can be used to estimate epidemiological dynamics
Temperate airborne grass pollen defined by spatio-temporal shifts in community composition

However, it is unknown how airborne pollen assemblages change across time and space. Human sensitivity varies between different species of grass that flower at different times, but it is not known whether temporal turnover in species composition match terrestrial flowering or whether species richness steadily accumulates over the grass pollen season. Here, using targeted, high-throughput sequencing, we demonstrate that all grass genera displayed discrete, temporally restricted peaks of incidence, which varied with latitude and longitude throughout Great Britain, revealing that the taxonomic composition of grass pollen exposure changes substantially across the grass pollen season.Natural Environment Research CouncilBiotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC
