Uncertainties in models of stellar structure and evolution

    Get PDF
Numerous physical aspects of stellar physics have been presented in Ses- sion 2 and the underlying uncertainties have been tentatively assessed. We try here to highlight some specific points raised after the talks and during the general discus- sion at the end of the session and eventually at the end of the workshop. A table of model uncertainties is then drawn with the help of the participants in order to give the state of the art in stellar modeling uncertainties as of July 2013.Comment: Proc. of the workshop "Asteroseismology of stellar populations in the Milky Way" (Sesto, 22-26 July 2013), Astrophysics and Space Science Proceedings, (eds. Comunicación en las organizaciones: contribuciones a las revistas académicas europeas

Studies and research work devoted to organizational communication had, until the last fifteen years or so, remained marginal, but during that period they have emerged to become a major focus for analysis by a growing number of researchers in the Information and Communication Sciences (ICS). They occupy ever greater ground in theoretical debates relating to organizations that had hitherto been covered by neighboring disciplines such as sociology and/or management. Initially limited to the world of business, they have gradually opened out to organizations in general, meaning any established social unit that conducts a set of activities oriented towards defined goals, as with clubs and associations or local authorities, for example. They now address both communication processes observed and the strategic means employed. A large number of empirical studies have been devoted to the issue.

This Bridge Called Imagination: On Reading the Arab Image Foundation and Its Collection

    Get PDF
This essay examines the benefits and disadvantages of using imagination as a method of historical research in the archive. Employing Jean-Paul Sartre\u27s notion of “image-consciousness” in The Psychology of Imagination, imagination is defined and explored as a form of perception based upon temporal absence or suspension. This method is then discussed in relation to the exhibition “Not Given: Talking of and Around Photographs of Arab Women” (2006), curated by the author with artist Isabelle Massu. The installation was assembled with the cooperation of the Arab Image Foundation in Beirut and traveled from Marseille (2005-06) to San Francisco (2007). The author explores a central element in the exhibition—the mélange of terms and cultural forces operating within the Arab Image Foundation\u27s keyword system—in order to posit the presence of an archival imagination that carries the method of imaginative research into the construction of the archive itself. The Arab Image Foundation—an archive with its own peculiar cross-cultural history and digital future— is found to encourage its own particular form of engagement

The Illusion of Distance and the Spectre of Proximity in the Films of Jorge Semprun

Historical and political films offer a unique perspective onthe relationship between distance and proximity: based inchronological fact and accuracy, they bring that which is remote, past, or out-of-date back into the here-and-now of the present day. The films of Jorge Semprun are exemplary politico-historical films, reanimating rebellion, conflict and ideological differences from a broad European and 20th century perspective. While the visual reanimation of the past may appear to bring the events into the immediacy of the present, the viewing experience itself, complete with contemporary misunderstandings and misconceptions, only underlines the remoteness of the event. This paper explores how this juxtaposition of distance and proximity in politico-historical film reflects the position of Europe and of Semprun; symptomatic of the traumatic irresolution of history and memory. Ultimately, Semprun’s films only show something which is there without ever really being there: haunted by spectres of proximity, ghosted by the illusion of distance

International collaboration schemes in earth and environmental sciences : IGEC programmes and UNESCO IHP

There is a lack of studies that investigate how internationalization of science can effectively contribute to the globalization of environmental knowledge. Two cases of international collaboration programmes are analyzed from a science and innovation research perspective: (1) The organizational scheme of the International Global Environmental Change (IGEC) programmes in the ICSU tradition, and (2) the International Hydrological Programme (IHP). led by the UNESCO. The paper draws on two analytical distinctions: Firstly, following Turner et al. (1990), systemic global change is distinguished from local or regional environmental change that becomes global by worldwide accumulation. Secondly, collaboration programmes that belong to the social system of science are distinguished from programmes at the intersection of scientific and political spheres. Both cases are compared in terms of their (a) rationales for international collaboration, (b) their organisational structure and fundings, (c) international participation and (d) linkages between problem structure and collaboration. Representative and contrasting examples, their juxtaposition illustrates actual strategies and various constraints faced by scientific and intergouvernmental agencies promoting international collaboration in S & T for sustainability and capacity development. The paper reports research of my ongoing dissertation project under the working title Internationalization in environmental research: The case of freshwater. --
