Evidence for a rapid decrease in Pluto's atmospheric pressure revealed by a stellar occultation in 2019
We report observations of a stellar occultation by Pluto on 2019 July 17. A
single-chord high-speed (time resolution s) photometry dataset was
obtained with a CMOS camera mounted on the Tohoku University 60 cm telescope
(Haleakala, Hawaii). The occultation light curve is satisfactorily fitted to an
existing Pluto's atmospheric model. We find the lowest pressure value at a
reference radius of among those reported after 2012,
indicating a possible rapid (approximately of the previous
value) pressure drop between 2016 (the latest reported estimate) and 2019.
However, this drop is detected at a level only and still requires
confirmation from future observations. If real, this trend is opposite to the
monotonic increase of Pluto's atmospheric pressure reported by previous
studies. The observed decrease trend is possibly caused by ongoing
condensation processes in the Sputnik Planitia glacier associated with an
orbitally driven decline of solar insolation, as predicted by previous
theoretical models. However, the observed amplitude of the pressure decrease is

Near-infrared Brightness of the Galilean Satellites Eclipsed in Jovian Shadow: A New Technique to Investigate Jovian Upper Atmosphere
We have discovered that Europa, Ganymede and Callisto are bright around 1.5
{\mu}m even when not directly lit by sunlight, based on observations from the
Hubble Space Telescope and the Subaru Telescope. The observations were
conducted with non-sidereal tracking on Jupiter outside of the field of view to
reduce the stray light subtraction uncertainty due to the close proximity of
Jupiter. Their eclipsed luminosity was - of their uneclipsed
brightness, which is low enough that this phenomenon has been undiscovered
until now. In addition, Europa in eclipse was <1/10 of the others at 1.5
{\mu}m, a potential clue to the origin of the source of luminosity. Likewise,
Ganymede observations were attempted at 3.6 {\mu}m by the Spitzer Space
Telescope but it was not detected, suggesting a significant wavelength
dependence. The reason why they are luminous even when in the Jovian shadow is
still unknown, but forward-scattered sunlight by haze in the Jovian upper
atmosphere is proposed as the most plausible candidate. If this is the case,
observations of these Galilean satellites while eclipsed by the Jovian shadow
provide us a new technique to investigate Jovian atmospheric composition, and
investigating the transmission spectrum of Jupiter by this method is important
for investigating the atmosphere of extrasolar giant planets by transit

Multiwavelength study of the high-latitude cloud L1642: chain of star formation
L1642 is one of the two high galactic latitude (|b| > 30deg) clouds confirmed
to have active star formation. We examine the properties of this cloud,
especially the large-scale structure, dust properties, and compact sources in
different stages of star formation. We present high-resolution far-infrared and
submm observations with the Herschel and AKARI satellites and mm observations
with the AzTEC/ASTE telescope, which we combined with archive data from near-
and mid-infrared (2MASS, WISE) to mm observations (Planck). The Herschel
observations, combined with other data, show a sequence of objects from a cold
clump to young stellar objects at different evolutionary stages. Source B-3
(2MASS J04351455-1414468) appears to be a YSO forming inside the L1642 cloud,
instead of a foreground brown dwarf, as previously classified. Herschel data
reveal striation in the diffuse dust emission around L1642. The western region
shows striation towards NE and has a steeper column density gradient on its
southern side. The densest central region has a bow-shock like structure
showing compression from the west and a filamentary tail extending towards
east. The differences suggest that these may be spatially distinct structures,
aligned only in projection. We derive values of the dust emission cross-section
per H nucleon for different regions of the cloud. Modified black-body fits to
the spectral energy distribution of Herschel and Planck data give emissivity
spectral index beta values 1.8-2.0 for the different regions. The compact
sources have lower beta values and show an anticorrelation between T and beta.
Markov chain Monte Carlo calculations demonstrate the strong anticorrelation
between beta and T errors and the importance of mm Planck data in constraining
the estimates. L1642 reveals a more complex structure and sequence of star

Characterization and Improvement of the Image Quality of the Data Taken with the Infrared Camera (IRC) Mid-Infrared Channels onboard AKARI
Mid-infrared images frequently suffer artifacts and extended point spread
functions (PSFs). We investigate the characteristics of the artifacts and the
PSFs in images obtained with the Infrared Camera (IRC) onboard AKARI at four
mid-infrared bands of the S7 (7{\mu}m), S11 (11{\mu}m), L15 (15{\mu}m), and L24
(24 {\mu}m). Removal of the artifacts significantly improves the reliability of
the ref- erence data for flat-fielding at the L15 and L24 bands. A set of
models of the IRC PSFs is also constructed from on-orbit data. These PSFs have
extended components that come from diffraction and scattering within the
detector arrays. We estimate the aperture correction factors for point sources
and the surface brightness correction factors for diffuse sources. We conclude
that the surface brightness correction factors range from 0.95 to 0.8, taking
account of the extended component of the PSFs. To correct for the extended PSF
effects for the study of faint structures, we also develop an image
reconstruction method, which consists of the deconvolution with the PSF and the
convolution with an appropriate Gaussian. The appropriate removal of the
artifacts, improved flat-fielding, and image reconstruction with the extended
PSFs enable us to investigate de- tailed structures of extended sources in IRC

Tobacco Rattle Virus Vector: A Rapid and Transient Means of Silencing Manduca sexta Genes by Plant Mediated RNA Interference
Background: RNAi can be achieved in insect herbivores by feeding them host plants stably transformed to express double stranded RNA (dsRNA) of selected midgut-expressed genes. However, the development of stably transformed plants is a slow and laborious process and here we developed a rapid, reliable and transient method. We used viral vectors to produce dsRNA in the host plant Nicotiana attenuata to transiently silence midgut genes of the plantâs lepidopteran specialist herbivore, Manduca sexta. To compare the efficacy of longer, undiced dsRNA for insect gene silencing, we silenced N. attenuataâs dicer genes (NaDCL1- 4) in all combinations in a plant stably transformed to express dsRNA targeting an insect gene. Methodology/Principal Findings: Stable transgenic N. attenuata plants harboring a 312 bp fragment of MsCYP6B46 in an inverted repeat orientation (ir-CYP6B46) were generated to produce CYP6B46 dsRNA. After consuming these plants, transcripts of CYP6B46 were significantly reduced in M. sexta larval midguts. The same 312 bp cDNA was cloned in an antisense orientation into a TRV vector and Agro-infiltrated into N. attenuata plants. When larvae ingested these plants, similar reductions in CYP6B46 transcripts were observed without reducing transcripts of the most closely related MsCYP6B45. We used this transient method to rapidly silence the expression of two additional midgut-expressed MsCYPs. Gene expression in the rat brain: High similarity but unique differences between frontomedial-, temporal- and occipital cortex
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The six-layered neocortex of the mammalian brain may appear largely homologous, but is in reality a modular structure of anatomically and functionally distinct areas. However, global gene expression seems to be almost identical across the cerebral cortex and only a few genes have so far been reported to show regional enrichment in specific cortical areas.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In the present study on adult rat brain, we have corroborated the strikingly similar gene expression among cortical areas. However, differential expression analysis has allowed for the identification of 30, 24 and 11 genes enriched in frontomedial -, temporal- or occipital cortex, respectively. A large proportion of these 65 genes appear to be involved in signal transduction, including the ion channel <it>Fxyd6</it>, the neuropeptide <it>Grp </it>and the nuclear receptor <it>Rorb</it>. We also find that the majority of these genes display increased expression levels around birth and show distinct preferences for certain cortical layers and cell types in rodents.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Since specific patterns of expression often are linked to equally specialised biological functions, we propose that these cortex sub-region enriched genes are important for proper functioning of the cortical regions in question.</p
Analysis of Area-Specific Expression Patterns of RORbeta, ER81 and Nurr1 mRNAs in Rat Neocortex by Double In Situ Hybridization and Cortical Box Method
BACKGROUND: The mammalian neocortex is subdivided into many areas, each of which exhibits distinctive lamina architecture. To investigate such area differences in detail, we chose three genes for comparative analyses, namely, RORbeta, ER81 and Nurr1, mRNAs of which have been reported to be mainly expressed in layers 4, 5 and 6, respectively. To analyze their qualitative and quantitative coexpression profiles in the rat neocortex, we used double in situ hybridization (ISH) histochemistry and cortical box method which we previously developed to integrate the data of different staining and individuals in a standard three-dimensional space. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Our new approach resulted in three main observations. First, the three genes showed unique area distribution patterns that are mostly complementary to one another. The patterns revealed by cortical box method matched well with the cytoarchitectonic areas defined by Nissl staining. Second, at single cell level, RORbeta and ER81 mRNAs were coexpressed in a subpopulation of layer 5 neurons, whereas Nurr1 and ER81 mRNAs were not colocalized. Third, principal component analysis showed that the order of hierarchical processing in the cortex correlates well with the expression profiles of these three genes. Based on this analysis, the dysgranular zone (DZ) in the somatosensory area was considered to exhibit a profile of a higher order area, which is consistent with previous proposal. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: The tight relationship between the expression of the three layer specific genes and functional areas were revealed, demonstrating the usefulness of cortical box method in the study on the cerebral cortex. In particular, it allowed us to perform statistical evaluation and pattern matching, which would become important in interpreting the ever-increasing data of gene expression in the cortex

Psychiatry out-of-hours: a focus group study of GPs' experiences in Norwegian casualty clinics
Background: For Norwegian general practitioners (GPs), acute treatment of mental illness and substance abuse are among the most commonly experienced emergency situations in out-of-hours primary healthcare. The largest share of acute referrals to emergency psychiatric wards occurs out-of-hours, and out-of-hours services are responsible for a disproportionately high share of compulsory referrals. Concerns exist regarding the quality of mental healthcare provided in the out-of-hours setting. The aim of this study was to explore which challenges GPs experience when providing emergency care out-of-hours to patients presenting problems related to mental illness or substance abuse. Methods: We conducted a qualitative study based on two individual interviews and six focus groups with purposively sampled GPs (totally 45 participants). The interviews were analysed successively in an editing style, using a thematic approach based on methodological descriptions by Charmaz and Malterud. Results: Safety and uncertainty were the dominating themes in the discussions. The threat to personal safety due to unpredictable patient behaviour was a central concern, and present security precautions in the out-of-hours services were questioned. The GPs expressed high levels of uncertainty in their work with patients presenting problems related to mental illness or substance abuse. The complexity of the problems presented, shortage of time, limited access to reliable information and limited range of interventions available during out-of-hours contributed to this uncertainty. Perceived access to second opinion seemed to have a major impact on subjectively experienced work stress. Conclusions: The GPs experienced out-of-hours psychiatry as a field with high levels of uncertainty and limited support to help them meet the experienced challenges. This might influence the quality of care provided. If the current organisation of emergency mental healthcare is to be kept, we need to provide GPs with a better support framework out-of-hours
