The idea behind Cloud Computing is to transform a bigger segment of the IT market, making software and hardware a more attractive service and redefining the use of IT hardware and software for effective resource allocation and scheduling. Allocation of resources in Cloud Computing environment however, is an extremely very challenging task according, hence the need for efficient algorithms for effective allocation of resources? This paper presents resource Allocation in Cloud Computing using a Generalized Knapsack Algorithm. The main aim of this paper is to develop Knapsack based Cloud Computing Resource Allocation Model. The specific objectives are to: review the existing resource allocation model; design the Knapsack allocation model; evaluate the Knapsack model by using the dynamic programming approach; and implemented the model by using Java Programming language

Design of RFID based Location Aware System to Mitigate Child Kidnapping in Nigerian Nursery and Primary Schools

Today, kidnapping cases in Nigeria is on the daily increase and children in nursery and primary schools are not left out. These innocent children are lured with precious items and food items and kidnapped even from school premises. To curb this act of kidnapping in schools, security men are employed to watch the gates but they cannot always determine the guardian-ward relationship of all pupils easily. It is believed that this can be curbed if the guardian-ward relationship can be determined easily and the location of all pupils can also be known per time. Today, there exist various means by which the locations of people, animal or items can be tracked real time, some of which were explored including Global positioning system (GPS), mobile phone tracking etc. but all come with their limitation especially cost of implementation. This work thus proposes a cost-effective location-aware system design integrating Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), which is able to determine the location of pupils per time within the school premises, and also map and determine guardian-ward relationship

The Charron-Bost Database Replication Model was extended by adding consistency using Load Balancing technique. In addition, the Model was extended to achieve heterogeneous replication to bridge the gap among different database system. The framework for achieving heterogeneous replication between MySQL and Oracle database was also provided. The hybridization of Round Robin with Maximum Minimum RRMaxMin was simulated using Cloud Analyst and the performance was compared with other load balancing algorithm for response time and cost effectiveness. The findings of this study were that: The extended model enhance ability to perform heterogeneous replication in grid environment. The introduction of a new load balancing algorithm (RRMaxMin) brought about significant improvement in the cloud services. Out of all the algorithms that were evaluated, RRMaxMin performed better in terms of overall response time of 226.16ms and 89.9% cost effectiveness. The study concluded that load balancing strategy is a more reliable way to achieving heterogeneous replication in a distributed environment. The study recommended that RRMaxMin should be adopted in the cloud service to improve user satisfactio

A comparative study of Heterogeneous Tools for Replication in a Distributed System

This paper presents a comparative study of Heterogeneous Tools for Replication in a Distributed System. The specific objectives of the study were to: investigate how to perform heterogeneous replication; analyze the different tools that can be used to achieve heterogeneous replication; and compare these tools with each other. The findings from the study show that tungsten replicator provides a very flexible and cost effective method, whereas the oracle golden gate would be the choice if money is not a hindrance. The MySQL native replication is also good, but lack the dexterity of tungsten replicator and oracle golden gate. By using replication mechanism of the different database system does not bring about high efficiency as it was envisage. The study helps in making sharing and accessing of vital information easy, even if stored in various database systems. This is very good for business all over the world where several organizations need to merge data for one reason or the other
