Mental and physical effects of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake on School Children, and Health Support initiatives by YogoTeachers: Findings from a survey of high school yogo teachers 5 years after the disaster
Objective: To clarify the current mental and physical state of students 5 years after experiencing the Great East Japan earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear accident, and to shed light on the practical initiatives and issues faced by yogo teachers in supporting students’ health.
Method: In May 2016, we conducted a mail-based questionnaire of yogo teachers at 15 prefectural high schools in Soma District and Futaba District (collectively, “Soso”) in Fukushima Prefecture, one of the areas most heavily affected by the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. The questionnaire focused on (1) health and school life of students; and (2) current initiatives and issues faced by yogo teachers in supporting student health.
Results: We received responses from 8 of the 15 high school yogo teachers surveyed (response rate: 53.3%).Six yogo teachers (75%) responded that the “students are calm.” However, 6 yogo teachers (75%) recognized a tendency among students towards weight gain and obesity, as well as reduced physical stamina and sporting ability, while 4 yogo teachers (50%) indicated that some students were anxious about their future and career path, and were receiving personal support from the school counselor. The yogo teachers provided support to students while attempting to ascertain their mental and physical well-being through greater health monitoring and questionnaires, and while coordinating with the school physician and counselor.
Conclusion: Five years after the earthquake, high school students in the Soso district are now leading a more relaxed school life, but still feel anxious about their future health and career path due to lingering concerns about radiation, highlighting the need for long-term support by yogo teachers
Health Support Provided by Yogo Teachers for Adolescent Female Students with a Thin Body Type
Purpose: To clarify the realities and challenges involved in health support provided by yogo teachers to adolescent
girls who have a thin body type.
Methods: A semi-structured interview survey was conducted with yogo teachers at a Japanese high school
with experience of providing health support to thin adolescent female students and the results of the survey
were subjected to qualitative analysis.
Results: With regard to health support provided by yogo teachers, the results of analysis found that the actual
situation consisted of the five categories of 【sharing information throughout the school organization to
investigate methods of support】,【 realizing studentsʼ situations through the provision of individual support】,
【referring students and parents to specialist agencies】,【investigating collaborations with parents with students
ʼ consent】, and 【carrying out prevention and awareness-raising activities about thin physiques】.
However, the analysis also found that the practical challenges for providing such health support consisted of
the six categories of 【working with parents to liaise with medical institutions】,【continuous support in collaboration
with specialist agencies】,【 educational health support that enables all students to manage their
own health】,【 yogo teachersʼ professional knowledge and assessment of eating disorders】,【 support methods
that students can engage with on their own initiative, according to their situation】, and 【creating a counseling-
friendly environment to facilitate early detection】.Discussion: While yogo teachers had an overall grasp of studentsʼ situations through their organizational
engagements in cooperation with faculty and school physicians, as well as individual support activities, it
was clear that they faced difficulties and challenges in relation to working together with parents and specialist
agencies. In the future, improving collaboration with parents will require that they, too, be encouraged
to recognize that being excessively thin represents a health problem for adolescent female students. In
addition, it will also be necessary to work towards building daily collaboration systems, such as by having
yogo teachers keep track of potential partner medical institutions as a matter of routine. It was further suggested
that yogo teachers will need to provide educational and preventive health support oriented toward
helping female students acquire the ability to manage their own health
Mouse Embryonic Stem Cells Inhibit Murine Cytomegalovirus Infection through a Multi-Step Process
In humans, cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the most significant infectious cause of intrauterine infections that cause congenital anomalies of the central nervous system. Currently, it is not known how this process is affected by the timing of infection and the susceptibility of early-gestational-period cells. Embryonic stem (ES) cells are more resistant to CMV than most other cell types, although the mechanism responsible for this resistance is not well understood. Using a plaque assay and evaluation of immediate-early 1 mRNA and protein expression, we found that mouse ES cells were resistant to murine CMV (MCMV) at the point of transcription. In ES cells infected with MCMV, treatment with forskolin and trichostatin A did not confer full permissiveness to MCMV. In ES cultures infected with elongation factor-1α (EF-1α) promoter-green fluorescent protein (GFP) recombinant MCMV at a multiplicity of infection of 10, less than 5% of cells were GFP-positive, despite the fact that ES cells have relatively high EF-1α promoter activity. Quantitative PCR analysis of the MCMV genome showed that ES cells allow approximately 20-fold less MCMV DNA to enter the nucleus than mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) do, and that this inhibition occurs in a multi-step manner. In situ hybridization revealed that ES cell nuclei have significantly less MCMV DNA than MEF nuclei. This appears to be facilitated by the fact that ES cells express less heparan sulfate, β1 integrin, and vimentin, and have fewer nuclear pores, than MEF. This may reduce the ability of MCMV to attach to and enter through the cellular membrane, translocate to the nucleus, and cross the nuclear membrane in pluripotent stem cells (ES/induced pluripotent stem cells). 本研究は、さまざまな分野で注目されるマインドフルネスを用いたメンタルトレーニングの効果を検討することを目的とし、マインドフルネスを用いたメンタルトレーニングが女子大学生アスリートの身体組成、心理面、および生活習慣面にどのような影響を与えるのか検討を行った。
T大学の女子大学生アスリートを対象にメンタルトレーニング群は5週間のメンタルトレーニング(約20分)を行い、メンタルトレーニングを行わないコントロール群との比較を行った。両群ともに実験期間前後に身体組成測定、心理調査(POMS2)を行い、実験期間後に約5週間の体調面、心理面、生活習慣等の変
化に関するアンケートを行った。

Successful Endoscopic Resection of an Early Carcinoma of the Duodenum
We describe a patient in whom an early carcinoma of the duodenum was able to be resected
endoscopically. A 77-year-old man presented with epigastric pain. Upper gastrointestinal
endoscopy revealed a mass in the duodenum, and the patient was admitted. A whitish nodular
aggregated lesion, measuring 20 mm in diameter, was found in the second portion of the
duodenum. Examination of a biopsy specimen showed a Group III tubular adenoma. Endoscopic ultrasonography showed that the lesion was confined to the mucosa. The large size
of the lesion suggested the possibility of malignancy. Endoscopic mucosal resection was
therefore performed. Histopathologically, the diagnosis was carcinoma in adenoma. The
depth of invasion was mucosal. We conclude that endoscopic muosal resection can be used
to treat mucosal lesions arising in the duodenum
Combination therapy with normobaric oxygen (NBO) plus thrombolysis in experimental ischemic stroke
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The widespread use of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), the only FDA-approved acute stroke treatment, remains limited by its narrow therapeutic time window and related risks of brain hemorrhage. Normobaric oxygen therapy (NBO) may be a useful physiological strategy that slows down the process of cerebral infarction, thus potentially allowing for delayed or more effective thrombolysis. In this study we investigated the effects of NBO started simultaneously with intravenous tPA, in spontaneously hypertensive rats subjected to embolic middle cerebral artery (MCA) stroke. After homologous clot injection, animals were randomized into different treatment groups: saline injected at 1 hour; tPA at 1 hour; saline at 1 hour plus NBO; tPA at 1 hour plus NBO. NBO was maintained for 3 hours. Infarct volume, brain swelling and hemorrhagic transformation were quantified at 24 hours. Outcome assessments were blinded to therapy.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Upon clot injection, cerebral perfusion in the MCA territory dropped below 20% of pre-ischemic baselines. Both tPA-treated groups showed effective thrombolysis (perfusion restored to nearly 100%) and smaller infarct volumes (379 ± 57 mm<sup>3 </sup>saline controls; 309 ± 58 mm<sup>3 </sup>NBO; 201 ± 78 mm<sup>3 </sup>tPA; 138 ± 30 mm<sup>3 </sup>tPA plus NBO), showing that tPA-induced reperfusion salvages ischemic tissue and that NBO does not significantly alter this neuroprotective effect. NBO had no significant effect on hemorrhagic conversion, brain swelling, or mortality.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>NBO can be safely co-administered with tPA. The efficacy of tPA thrombolysis is not affected and there is no induction of brain hemorrhage or edema. These experimental results require clinical confirmation.</p
