Aesthetic markers in the voice of radio professionals
Voice is one of the most essential means of expression in human experience and a valuable tool for communication. Its sound characteristics are most relevant in contexts such as social communication and particularly the radio, where the practice of communication is treated at a professional level and the need to captivate a public-listener through the vocal resources is identified. Therefore, this study intended to find if there are specific vocal qualities that contribute to a better or worse appreciation of vocal aesthetic of the radio professional concerning experienced radio listeners.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Impacts of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on the global demand for exotic pets: An expert elicitation approach
The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has caused immense social and economic costs worldwide. Most experts
endorse the view that the virus has a zoonotic origin with the final spillover being associated
with wildlife trade. Besides human consumption, wild animals are also extensively traded as pets.
Information on zoonotic diseases has been reported to reduce consumer demand for exotic pets.
We conducted a global survey and collected 162 responses from international experts on exotic
pet trade (traders, academics, NGOs, enforcement entities) to understand how the legal and illegal
trade of exotic pets is expected to be affected by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Our results
suggest that legal purchase of exotic pets is perceived as decreasing during the first pandemic
wave due to: lower availability of animals for trade, suppliers’ inability to reach consumers and
social distancing measures. The general perception is that in the future (i.e., next five years), both
demand and supply of legally traded exotic pets are expected to either remain unchanged or
decrease only temporarily. The consumer demand for illegal exotic pets is also expected to remain
unchanged following the outbreak. The top two challenges reported by respondents, when
considering the consequences of the pandemic for the exotic pet trade, are inadequate enforcement
of national regulations and increased illegal trade. Our results suggest that the negative
consequences of a zoonotic outbreak may not dissuade consumers of exotic pets. Worldwide, the
transit/storing conditions and lack of health screenings of traded live animals are conducive to
spreading diseases. Consumer demand is a key driver of trade, and enforcement of trade regulations
will remain challenging, unless factors driving consumer demand are adequately incorporated
in problem-solving frameworks. We emphasize the complexity of trade dynamics and the
need to go beyond bans on wildlife trade. Stronger law enforcement, implemented along with
initiatives dissuading consumption of wild exotic pets, are essential to sustainably satisfy the

Correlation between voxel based morphometry and manual volumetry in magnetic resonance images of the human brain
This is a comparative study between manual volumetry (MV) and voxel based morphometry (VBM) as methods of evaluating the volume of brain structures in magnetic resonance images. The volumes of the hippocampus and the amygdala of 16 panic disorder patients and 16 healthy controls measured through MV were correlated with the volumes of gray matter estimated by optimized modulated VBM. The chosen structures are composed almost exclusively of gray matter. Using a 4 mm Gaussian filter, statistically significant clusters were found bilaterally in the hippocampus and in the right amygdala in the statistical parametric map correlating with the respective manual volume. With the conventional 12 mm filter,a significant correlation was found only for the right hippocampus. Therefore, narrowfilters increase the sensitivity of the correlation procedure, especially when small brain structures are analyzed. The two techniques seem to consistently measure structural volume. Ambas as técnicas parecem medir consistentemente o volume estrutural.Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)(FAEPA) Hospital das Clínicas da FMRPUSP - Fundação de Apoio ao Ensino, Pesquisa e Asssistênci
Characterization of alpha thalassemic genotypes by multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification in the Brazilian population
Alpha-thalassemia is the most common inherited disorder of hemoglobin synthesis. Genomic deletions involving the alpha-globin gene cluster on chromosome 16p13.3 are the most frequent molecular causes of the disease. Although common deletions can be detected by a single multiplex gap-PCR, the rare and novel deletions depend on more laborious techniques for their identification. The multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA) technique has recently been used for this purpose and was successfully used in the present study to detect the molecular alterations responsible for the alpha-thalassemic phenotypes in 8 unrelated individuals (3 males and 5 females; age, 4 months to 30 years) in whom the molecular basis of the disease could not be determined by conventional methods. A total of 44 probe pairs were used for MLPA, covering approximately 800 kb from the telomere to the MSLN gene in the 16p13.3 region. Eight deletions were detected. Four of these varied in size from 240 to 720 kb and affected a large region including the entire alpha-globin gene cluster and its upstream regulatory element (alpha-MRE), while the other four varied in size from 0.4 to 100 kb and were limited to a region containing this element. This study is the first in Brazil to use the MLPA method to determine the molecular basis of alpha-thalassemia. The variety of rearrangements identified highlights the need to investigate all cases presenting microcytosis and hypochromia, but without iron deficiency or elevated hemoglobin A2 levels and suggests that these rearrangements may be more frequent in our population than previously estimated.162
Deletion of kinin B2 receptor alters muscle metabolism and exercise performance
Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of metabolic risk factors such as obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Mitochondria is the main site of ATP production and its dysfunction leads to decreased oxidative phosphorylation, resulting in lipid accumulation and insulin resistance. Our group has demonstrated that kinins can modulate glucose and lipid metabolism as well as skeletal muscle mass. By using B2 receptor knockout mice (B2R-/-) we investigated whether kinin action affects weight gain and physical performance of the animals. Our results show that B2R-/- mice are resistant to high fat diet-induced obesity, have higher glucose tolerance as well as increased mitochondrial mass. These features are accompanied by higher energy expenditure and a lower feed efficiency associated with an increase in the proportion of type I fibers and intermediary fibers characterized by higher mitochondrial content and increased expression of genes related to oxidative metabolism. Additionally, the increased percentage of oxidative skeletal muscle fibers and mitochondrial apparatus in B2R-/- mice is coupled with a higher aerobic exercise performance. Taken together, our data give support to the involvement of kinins in skeletal muscle fiber type distribution and muscle metabolism, which ultimately protects against fat-induced obesity and improves aerobic exercise performance
The ZEPLIN II dark matter detector: data acquisition system and data reduction
ZEPLIN-II is a two-phase (liquid/gas) xenon dark matter detector searching
for WIMP-nucleon interactions. In this paper we describe the data acquisition
system used to record the data from ZEPLIN-II and the reduction procedures
which parameterise the data for subsequent analysis.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figure
