Even though incidental captures in fisheries are one of the major threats to seabirds, bycatch has been difficult to quantify and specific risk areas are rarely identified. The present study evaluates the potential fisheries bycatch effect on two of the most emblematic seabird species wintering off continental Portugal, the critically endangered Balearic Shearwater and Northern Gannet. Information was collected by on-board observers and voluntary logbooks kept by fishing boat captains. Each species' Potential Biological Removal (for the study area) was based on the respective population abundance estimated through aerial surveys. The analysis of bycatch mortality identified the Fixed Gear in the Polyvalent fleet and Purse Seiners as the fisheries with the highest Balearic Shearwater bycatch rate. Longline and Fixed Gear fisheries had the highest Northern Gannet bycatch rate. The Potential Biological Removal thresholds were 41 Balearic Shearwaters per year (CI ¼ 20–83) and 2345 Northern Gannets per year (CI ¼ 2049–2680). The overlap between the predictive species distribution maps and fisheries density maps allowed for a seabird Bycatch Risk Assessment. The higher Balearic Shearwater bycatch risk was obtained for Fixed Gear and Purse Seines and the highest Northern Gannet bycatch risk was obtained for Longline and Fixed Gear fisheries. Bycatch mitigation measures should be applied in fisheries presenting the higher bycatch risks. This study identifies the potential areas where Balearic Shearwater and Northern Gannet bycatch is more likely to occur, including some of the already designated Special Protection Areas where management and conservation measures should urgently be applied.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

In this study, we aimed at producing absolute population estimates of post-breeding Gannets and evaluating the importance of the study area within the species’ migration range. We performed six aerial surveys in September and/or October each year between 2010 and 2015, covering 74,840km2 in total. Using line transect methodology, 3,672 Gannet sightings were recorded along 10,496.3 nautical miles (nm). Immature individuals and adults comprised approximately 87% of all sightings. Using Distance sampling, overall abundance was estimated at 89,930 birds, ranging from 58,010 individuals in 2014 to 128,140 in 2015. the highest densities per sector areas were recorded in the North and Centre sectors whereas the lowest densities were registered in the Galicia sector, the Spanish region within the study area. Gannets were mostly present in shallow shelf waters of the continental shelf, particularly between 3 and 20 nautical miles offshore. Habitat suitability models for Gannets in the study area were tested using several eco-geographical variables and chlorophyll concentrations were found to contribute most to explaining annual Gannet occurrence probabilities. A global interannual spatial analysis demonstrated the core areas for conservation of the Northern Gannet in Western Iberian Waters. Moreover, our results demonstrate that Western Iberian waters are used by almost 10% of the global Northern Gannet population, corroborating the existence of seabird hotspots during the non-breeding period, along migration corridors and at their wintering grounds.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Generating human-like movements on an anthropomorphic robot using an interior point method

In previous work we have presented a model for generating human-like arm and hand movements on an anthropomorphic robot involved in human-robot collaboration tasks. This model was inspired by the Posture-Based Motion-Planning Model of human movements. Numerical results and simulations for reach-to-grasp movements with two different grip types have been presented previously. In this paper we extend our model in order to address the generation of more complex movement sequences which are challenged by scenarios cluttered with obstacles. The numerical results were obtained using the IPOPT solver, which was integrated in our MATLAB simulator of an anthropomorphic robot.EU funded Project PF7 Marie Curie ``NETT - Neural Engineering Transformative Technologies'', by FEDER funds through COMPETE (Operational Programme Thematic Factors of Competitiveness) and by portuguese funds through FCT (Foundation for Science and Technology) within the projects PEst-C/MAT/UI0013/2011 and FCOMP-01-0124-FEDER-022674

Western Iberian waters are important migratory flyways, stopover sites, and wintering areas for several of the world’s seabird species. To describe seabird species composition, distribution, and abundance in these waters, we performed six aerial surveys in September and/or October of each year, 2010–2015, covering 74 840 km2. Using line transect methodology, 27 396 seabird sightings from 17 taxonomic groups were recorded along 10 496.3 nautical miles (19 433 km). Using the program “Distance,” annual and overall abundance estimates were obtained for nine taxonomic groups: Balearic Shearwater Puffinus mauretanicus, Great Shearwater Ardenna gravis, Cory’s Shearwater Calonectris borealis, shearwaters, Northern Gannet Morus bassanus, Sabine’s Gull Xema sabini, Great Skua Stercorarius skua, storm petrels, and Red Phalarope Phalaropus fulicarius. For the six-year period, Northern Gannet was the most abundant species (89 630 individuals, coefficient of variation [CV] = 6.28%), followed by Cory’s Shearwater (25 044 individuals, CV = 7.56%) and Balearic Shearwater (13 632 individuals, CV = 20.81%). The remaining taxonomic groups exhibited variable abundances. Results confirm that the study area is important to several seabird species, providing baseline estimates to inform conservation policies and instruments, such as the Birds Directive or the Marine Strategy Framework Directive.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The objective of this paper is a methodological discussion regarding the application of Mixed Linear Models for the analysis of the Municipalities Performance Index (IDM) of Goiás for the years 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018. Thereby, it was performed a literature review about of Mixed Linear Models, as well it was described the context that permeated the application of the model that concerns the socioeconomic situation of the cities of Goiás in the selected years. In addition to the literature review, data were collected from Instituto Mauro Borges Statistical Database of Goiás. The results indicated that the mixed linear models adequately modeled the effects of covariates on the IDM. It is concluded that in database which the same experimental units are collected more than once, there is a need for statistical modeling that can capture variance between and within groups. Thus, in the analysis of the IDM, the variables budget balance, GDP per capita, telephone and internet infrastructure, distribution of doctors per thousand inhabitants and formal employment had positive impacts on the Municipalities Performance Index of Goiás. On the other hand, enrollment in school units negatively impacted the IDM. Keywords: Mixed Linear Models. Municipalities Performance Index of Goiás. Regional development. Longitudinal Data. Desarrollo regional. Project, development and test of an artificial multifunctional foot

    Get PDF
The main purpose of this project is the development of a multifunctional artificial foot, capable of duplicate a human foot in a laboratory environment, in order to evaluate and simulate footwear’s performance under certain conditions. This foot is used as a laboratory prototype and is multisegmented, in order that each section is controlled independently in terms of heat generation and sweating rate, therefore it is possible to simulate more accurately the real behaviour of a human foot. The device produces thermal insulation values that will help to design footwear with better ability in terms of thermal comfort, replacing human volunteers in thermal comfort perception tests, which are very subjective. The prototype was already tested, and preliminary results indicated that thermal insulation values are within the range of expected values produced by other foot thermal manikins and by human volunteers’ tests. This fact suggests that this lab prototype can be used in future thermal comfort evaluations. This project was supported by FCT (the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology) and CTCP (Fo otwear Technology Centre of Portugal) because of its poten tial interest and added value to the footwear industry, which is one of the most profitable business areas in Portugal.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Microbiota fingerprints within the oral cavity of cetaceans as indicators for population biomonitoring

The composition of mammalian microbiota has been related with the host health status. In this study, we assessed the oral microbiome of 3 cetacean species most commonly found stranded in Iberian Atlantic waters (Delphinus delphis, Stenella coeruleoalba and Phocoena phocoena), using 16S rDNA-amplicon metabarcoding. All oral microbiomes were dominated by Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes and Fusobacteria bacteria, which were also predominant in the oral cavity of Tursiops truncatus. A Constrained Canonical Analysis (CCA) showed that the major factors shaping the composition of 38 oral microbiomes (p-value < 0.05) were: (i) animal species and (ii) age class, segregating adults and juveniles. The correlation analysis also grouped the microbiomes by animal stranding location and health status. Similar discriminatory patterns were detected using the data from a previous study on Tursiops truncatus, indicating that this correlation approach may facilitate data comparisons between different studies on several cetacean species. This study identified a total of 15 bacterial genera and 27 OTUs discriminating between the observed CCA groups, which can be further explored as microbiota fingerprints to develop (i) specific diagnostic assays for cetacean population conservation and (ii) bio-monitoring approaches to assess the health of marine ecosystems from the Iberian Atlantic basin, using cetaceans as bioindicators. The authors would like to acknowledge to Jorg Becker and Joao Sobral for the sequencing services provided at the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciencia. Epidermal growthf actor (EGF) plays a critical role in cancer. A polymorphism in the EGF gene (EGF+61) may influence its expression and contribute to cancer predisposition and aggressiveness. In the present study, we aimed to elucidate the role of EGF+61in glioma susceptibility and prognosis. Experimental Design:A case-control study involving197 glioma patients and 570 controlswas done. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to calculate odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). False-positive report probability was also assessed. The luciferase reporter gene assay was used to ascertain the functional consequences of this polymorphism. Results: Corroborating the univariate analysis, the multivariate model showed that the G allele conferred higher risks for gliomas (OR,1.32; 95% CI,1.04-1.67), glioblastomas (OR,1.47; 95% CI, 1.02-2.10), and oligodendrogliomas (OR,1.55; 95% CI,1.07-2.23).TheGG genotypeswere associatedwithincreased risk for gliomas (OR,1.71; 95%CI,1.07-2.73), glioblastomas (OR, 2.03; 95% CI, 1.02-4.05), and oligodendrogliomas (OR, 2.72; 95% CI, 1.18-6.28). In addition, the AG+GG genotypes were associated withhigher risk for gliomas (OR,1.52; 95% CI,1.03-2.23) and oligodendrogliomas (OR, 2.80; 95% CI,1.35-5.79). No significant associationwas observed between the EGF+61polymorphism and glioblastoma or oligodendroglioma patients’overall survival. The luciferase reporter gene assay exhibited a significant increased promoter activity for the G variant compared withthe referenceA allele. Conclusions: These findings support the role of the EGF+61polymorphism as a susceptibility factor for development of gliomas and show its implication on EGF promoter activity.Sixth Research Framework Programme of the European Union, Project INCA (LSHC-CT-2005-018704
