Propagation of gravity waves through an SPH scheme with numerical diffusive terms

    Get PDF
Basing on the work by Antuono et al. (2010) [1], an SPH model with numerical diffusive terms (here denoted ?-SPH) is combined with an enhanced treatment of solid boundaries to simulate 2D gravity waves generated by a wave maker and propagating into a basin. Both regular and transient wave systems are considered. In the former, a large number of simulations is performed for different wave steepness and height-to-depth ratio and the results are compared with a BEM Mixed-Eulerian-Lagrangian solver (here denoted BEM-MEL solver). In the latter, the ? -SPH model has been compared with both the experimental measurements available in the literature and with the BEM-MEL solver, at least until the breaking event occurs. The results show a satisfactory agreement between the ?-SPH model, the BEM-MEL solver and the experiments. Finally, the influence of the weakly-compressibility assumption on the SPH results is inspected and a convergence analysis is provided in order to identify the minimal spatial resolution needed to get an accurate representation of gravity waves

A wireless method to obtain the impedance from scattering parameters

    Get PDF
The coaxial wire method is a common and appreciated choice to assess the beam coupling impedance (BCI) of an accelerator element. Nevertheless, the results obtained from wire measurements could be inaccurate due to the presence of the stretched conductive. The aim of this work is to establish a solid technique to obtain the BCI from electromagnetic simulations, without modifications of the device under test. In this framework, we identified a new relation to get the resistive wall beam coupling impedance of a circular chamber directly from the scattering parameters. Furthermore, a possible generalization of the method to arbitrary cross section geometries has been studied and validated with numerical simulations

Does Physical Activity Influence Semantic Memory Activation in Amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment?

    Get PDF
The effect of physical activity (PA) on functional brain activation for semantic memory in amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) was examined using event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging during fame discrimination. Significantly greater semantic memory activation occurred in the left caudate of High- versus Low-PA patients, (P=0.03), suggesting PA may enhance memory-related caudate activation in aMCI

A parameter-free total Lagrangian smooth particle hydrodynamics algorithm applied to problems with free surfaces

    Get PDF
This paper presents a new Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics computational framework for the solution of inviscid free surface flow problems. The formulation is based on the Total Lagrangian description of a system of first-order conservation laws written in terms of the linear momentum and the Jacobian of the deformation. One of the aims of this paper is to explore the use of Total Lagrangian description in the case of large deformations but without topological changes. In this case, the evaluation of spatial integrals is carried out with respect to the initial undeformed configuration, yielding an extremely efficient formulation where the need for continuous particle neighbouring search is completely circumvented. To guarantee stability from the SPH discretisation point of view, consistently derived Riemann-based numerical dissipation is suitably introduced where global numerical entropy production is demonstrated via a novel technique in terms of the time rate of the Hamiltonian of the system. Since the kernel derivatives presented in this work are fixed in the reference configuration, the non-physical clumping mechanism is completely removed. To fulfil conservation of the global angular momentum, a posteriori (least-squares) projection procedure is introduced. Finally, a wide spectrum of dedicated prototype problems is thoroughly examined. Through these tests, the SPH methodology overcomes by construction a number of persistent numerical drawbacks (e.g. hour-glassing, pressure instability, global conservation and/or completeness issues) commonly found in SPH literature, without resorting to the use of any ad-hoc user-defined artificial stabilisation parameters. Crucially, the overall SPH algorithm yields equal second order of convergence for both velocities and pressure

Glutamine Acts as a Neuroprotectant against DNA Damage, Beta-Amyloid and H2O2-Induced Stress

Glutamine is the most abundant free amino acid in the human blood stream and is ‘conditionally essential’ to cells. Its intracellular levels are regulated both by the uptake of extracellular glutamine via specific transport systems and by its intracellular synthesis by glutamine synthetase (GS). Adding to the regulatory complexity, when extracellular glutamine is reduced GS protein levels rise. Unfortunately, this excess GS can be maladaptive. GS overexpression is neurotoxic especially if the cells are in a low-glutamine medium. Similarly, in low glutamine, the levels of multiple stress response proteins are reduced rendering cells hypersensitive to H2O2, zinc salts and DNA damage. These altered responses may have particular relevance to neurodegenerative diseases of aging. GS activity and glutamine levels are lower in the Alzheimer's disease (AD) brain, and a fraction of AD hippocampal neurons have dramatically increased GS levels compared with control subjects. We validated the importance of these observations by showing that raising glutamine levels in the medium protects cultured neuronal cells against the amyloid peptide, Aβ. Further, a 10-day course of dietary glutamine supplementation reduced inflammation-induced neuronal cell cycle activation, tau phosphorylation and ATM-activation in two different mouse models of familial AD while raising the levels of two synaptic proteins, VAMP2 and synaptophysin. Together, our observations suggest that healthy neuronal cells require both intracellular and extracellular glutamine, and that the neuroprotective effects of glutamine supplementation may prove beneficial in the treatment of AD

Driving And Dementia: A Physician\u27s Perspective

    Get PDF
As one-tenth of adults over sixty-five and one-half of adults over eighty-five are diagnosed with Alzheimer\u27s disease, the need to address the driving ability of such individuals grows as life expectancy increases. Different diagnoses of dementia are discussed, as are various tests which may help determine driving capability. Physicians and family members are urged to recommend re-testing when appropriate

Transverse beam coupling impedance studies at the CERN Proton Synchrotron Booster after the LHC Injectors Upgrade

After the LHC Injectors Upgrade (LIU) project, the CERN Proton Synchrotron Booster (PSB) operates with a new injection kinetic energy of 160 MeV and an extraction energy of 2 GeV. In light of this, several measurements have been performed to characterize the behaviour of the accelerator in terms of beam stability and beam coupling impedance in the new energy range. In particular, the horizontal instability observed in 2021 at about 1.7 GeV (between the old and the new extraction energy) has been deeply investigated and betatron coherent tune shift measurements have been carried out to further benchmark the PSB transverse beam coupling impedance model. Regarding the horizontal instability, although a mitigation strategy has been identified, measurements and studies have been conducted to understand and explain its source

A shallow-water sloshing model for wave breaking in rectangular tanks

We propose a simple, robust and efficient sloshing model that accounts for breaking phenomena evolving in rectangular tanks and in shallow-water conditions. The model has been obtained by applying Fourier analysis to Boussinesq-type equations and using an approximate analytic solution for the vorticity generated by wave breaking. The toe of the breaker and the intensity of the vorticity injected at the free surface are computed on the basis of literature results for coastal-type breakers. A first experimental campaign has been used to calibrate the turbulent viscosity of the sloshing model, while a second campaign has been run as final validation. The overall good agreement between the numerical outputs and the experimental data confirms the reliability and robustness of the proposed model
