Dark Matter and MOOCs

To teach the topic of Dark Matter in Galaxies to undergraduate and PhD students is not easy, one reason being that the scientific community has not converged yet to a generally shared knowledge. We argue that the teaching of this topic and its subsequent scientific progress may benefit by Massive Online and Open Courses. Rilettura di un’iscrizione repubblicana dall’ager Praetutianus

Si presenta una nuova lettura di un’iscrizione di Guazzano (TE) già nota (AE 1996, 573), che ricorda la realizzazione di un’aedes e del suo arredo (signum) nell’ambito di una realtà santuariale extravicana dedicata ad una divinità ignota. Si propone l’integrazione della menzione di tre personaggi in caso nominativo, nei quali si potrebbero riconoscere i magistri di un vicus sorto nelle vicinanze (Campovalano). Il territorio potrebbe rientrare nella pertica municipalis di Interamna o della pliniana Beregra, che potrebbe essere collocata proprio in quest’area. _____________________________________________ On présente une nouvelle lecture d’une inscription de Guazzano (TE) déja connue (AE 1996, 573), qui mentionne la réalisation d’une aedes et d’un signum dans une réalité sanctuariale consacrée à une divinité inconnue. Il contributo raccoglie un piccolo dossier di iscrizioni greche con citazioni letterarie, dipinte sulle pareti di edifici localizzati nell’area occidentale di lingua latina dell’Impero romano, che da un lato aprono uno squarcio sulla diffusione della cultura letteraria al di fuori dei circoli intellettuali illustrando il livello delle conoscenza della lingua e civiltà greca, dall’altro gettano luce su alcuni aspetti, finora poco indagati, del lavoro di bottega (con attenzione alla circolazione di cartoni e di maestranze itineranti) e in particolare sul riuso professionistico della letteratura greca

Food Insecurity And Child And Parent/Caretaker Overweight/Obesity In A Rural, Appalachian Mississippi Community

This study examined the differences in parent/caretaker body mass index (BMI) and parent/caretaker-reported child overweight/obesity by food security status in a rural, Appalachian, Mississippi community, as well as the relationship of parent/caretaker BMI and parent/caretaker-reported child overweight/obesity to food security status. A cross-sectional survey of elementary school parents/caretakers recruited at three elementary schools in an economically-distressed Appalachian, Mississippi county was conducted. Parent/caretaker BMI was calculated from self-reported height and weight. Caretaker-reported child overweight/obesity was determined using caretaker report of a medical professional identifying child overweight/obesity within the past year. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS (version 23, 2015) to assess for differences in parent/caretaker BMI and caretaker-reported child overweight/obesity by food security status (ANOVA, Independent Samples T-test, Pearson Chi Squared), as well as the relationship of food security to BMI and child overweight/obesity (Pearson r and Kendall’s taub correlations). Parent/caretaker participants (n=467, 41% response rate) were 34±8 years and predominantly Caucasian (n=264/465, 57%), female (n=425/461, 92%), married (n=243/453, 54%), with some college or higher education (n=256/461, 56%), and living in food-secure households (n=367/455, 80%). Parent/caretaker BMI differed by food security status (p=.02), with those from food-insecure households having a significantly higher BMI (31.7kg/m2±8.0 kg/m2) than those from food-secure households (29.2±7.2). Parent/caretaker BMI was greater in food-insecure households, but prevalence of caretaker-reported child overweight/obesity was greater in food-secure households (6.8%), compared to food-insecure households (1.1%). Exploring nutrition interventions, especially in a community hub (e.g., school), that may help to alleviate household food insecurity is warranted

CMB lensing signal analysis: prospects for measurements and characterisation for future surveys

Within the last few years, Cosmic Microwave Background gravitational lensing has become a new tool for cosmology and astrophysics. As a new independent kind of measurement in this field, it can help to break the degeneracy between the cosmological parameters and determining their values with a better accuracy. This field of research is becoming increasingly prominent and fertile in the latest years, both as a way to investigate the evolution of the Universe at late times, and in relation to the EUCLID mission preparatory science work, aiming at mapping galaxies on ABOUT 30% of the sky reaching a redshift of about 2. The aim of this thesis is to characterise the lensing signal in the CMB and to study the efficiency of lensing extraction at small angular scales from simulated CMB maps lensed by N-body simulations, and how this translates in constraining Dark Energy and its relevant parameters for the expansion. After investigating the balance between the tensor modes and lensing in the B 12mode power spectrum, the feasibility of lensing extraction on CMB lensed N-body simulations is demonstrated: the faithfulness of the implemented pipeline is assessed and verified for upcoming experimental setups and validated ranging from the degree to the arcminute scale
