Pain: metaphor, body, and culture in Anglo-American societies between the eighteenth and twentieth centuries
This article explores the relationship between metaphorical languages, body, and culture, and suggests that such an analysis can reveal a great deal about the meaning and experience of pain in Anglo-American societies between the eighteenth and twentieth centuries. It uses concepts within embodied cognition to speculate on how historians can write a history of sensation. Bodies are actively engaged in the linguistic processes and social interactions that constitute painful sensations. Language is engaged in a dialogue with physiological bodies and social environments. And culture collaborates in the creation of physiological bodies and metaphorical systems
Let's Make Love: Whiteness, Cleanliness and Sexuality in the French Reception of Marilyn Monroe
Copyright © by SAGE PublicationsRichard Dyer’s seminal work on whiteness in film considers Marilyn Monroe as the epitome of an institutionally racist Hollywood system that imagines the most desirable woman to be blonde, given that blondeness is understood as a guarantee of whiteness. This article adds to other recent scholarship on Monroe that has sought to complicate this reading by examining other meanings that can be attributed to her bleached blonde hair. By closely analyzing media texts that discussed Monroe in 1950s France, this article demonstrates the way in which her performance of ideal American female sexuality was read through the prism of Monroe as icon of cleanliness and (linked) modernity. It examines the way in which Monroe’s modernity allowed her to partially escape the traditional feminine private sphere and it concludes that Monroe’s bleached blonde hair can be seen in this context as having liberatory potential
UK Large-scale Wind Power Programme from 1970 to 1990: the Carmarthen Bay experiments and the Musgrove Vertical-Axis Turbines
This article describes the development of the Musgrove Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT)
concept, the UK ‘Carmarthen Bay’ wind turbine test programme, and UK government’s wind
power programme to 1990. One of the most significant developments in the story of British
wind power occurred during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, with the development of the
Musgrove vertical axis wind turbine and its inclusion within the UK Government’s wind
turbine test programme. Evolving from a supervisor’s idea for an undergraduate project at
Reading University, the Musgrove VAWT was once seen as an able competitor to the
horizontal axis wind systems that were also being encouraged at the time by both the UK
government and the Central Electricity Generating Board, the then nationalised electricity
utility for England and Wales. During the 1980s and 1990s the most developed Musgrove
VAWT system, along with three other commercial turbine designs was tested at
Carmarthen Bay, South Wales as part of a national wind power test programme. From these
developmental tests, operational data was collected and lessons learnt, which were

Anomalous relaxation kinetics of biological lattice-ligand binding models
We discuss theoretical models for the cooperative binding dynamics of ligands
to substrates, such as dimeric motor proteins to microtubules or more extended
macromolecules like tropomyosin to actin filaments. We study the effects of
steric constraints, size of ligands, binding rates and interaction between
neighboring proteins on the binding dynamics and binding stoichiometry.
Starting from an empty lattice the binding dynamics goes, quite generally,
through several stages. The first stage represents fast initial binding closely
resembling the physics of random sequential adsorption processes. Typically
this initial process leaves the system in a metastable locked state with many
small gaps between blocks of bound molecules. In a second stage the gaps
annihilate slowly as the ligands detach and reattach. This results in an
algebraic decay of the gap concentration and interesting scaling behavior. Upon
identifying the gaps with particles we show that the dynamics in this regime
can be explained by mapping it onto various reaction-diffusion models. The
final approach to equilibrium shows some interesting dynamic scaling
properties. We also discuss the effect of cooperativity on the equilibrium
stoichiometry, and their consequences for the interpretation of biochemical and

Satellite Telemetry and Long-Range Bat Movements
Background: Understanding the long-distance movement of bats has direct relevance to studies of population dynamics, ecology, disease emergence, and conservation.
Methodology/Principal Findings: We developed and trialed several collar and platform terminal transmitter (PTT) combinations on both free-living and captive fruit bats (Family Pteropodidae: Genus Pteropus). We examined transmitter weight, size, profile and comfort as key determinants of maximized transmitter activity. We then tested the importance of bat-related variables (species size/weight, roosting habitat and behavior) and environmental variables (day-length, rainfall pattern) in determining optimal collar/PTT configuration. We compared battery- and solar-powered PTT performance in various field situations, and found the latter more successful in maintaining voltage on species that roosted higher in the tree canopy, and at lower density, than those that roost more densely and lower in trees. Finally, we trialed transmitter accuracy, and found that actual distance errors and Argos location class error estimates were in broad agreement.
Conclusions/Significance: We conclude that no single collar or transmitter design is optimal for all bat species, and that species size/weight, species ecology and study objectives are key design considerations. Our study provides a strategy for collar and platform choice that will be applicable to a larger number of bat species as transmitter size and weight continue to decrease in the future

This paper takes as its focus the Midland Group Gallery in order to first, make a case for the consideration of the geographies of art galleries. Second, highlight the importance of galleries in the context of cultural geographies of the sixties. Third, discuss the role of provinciality in the operation of art worlds. In so doing it explicates one set of geographies surrounding the gallery
– those of the local, regional and international networks that connected to produce art works and art space. It reveals how the interactions between places and practices outside of metropolitan and regional hierarchies provides a more nuanced insight into how art worlds operated during the
sixties, a period of growing internationalism of art, and how contested definitions of the provincial played an integral role in this. The paper charts the operations of the Midland Group Gallery and the spaces that it occupied to demonstrate how it was representative of a post-war
discourse of provincialism and a corresponding re-evaluation of regional cultural activity
A Generic Framework for Criterion-Referenced Assessment of Undergraduate Essays
This paper presents a brief review of the relative merits of norm-referenced and criterion-referenced assessment of undergraduate students' written work. Acknowledging that there are both positive and negative aspects of criterion referencing, a generic framework for such assessment of undergraduate essays is presented. It comprises criteria and standards (organised by `dimensions of achievement', i.e. content, process, affect and skills), proficiency standards for English language and communication competence, and cartographic and graphic skills. Problems of implementation include the size and complexity of the framework and the need to interpret and clarify the criteria and standards for students
Protection from arthritis and myositis in a mouse model of acute chikungunya virus disease by bindarit, an inhibitor of monocyte chemotactic protein-1 synthesis
Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is associated with outbreaks of infectious rheumatic disease in humans. Using a mouse model of CHIKV arthritis and myositis, we show that tumor necrosis factor-α, interferon-γ, and monocyte chemotactic protein 1 (MCP-1) were dramatically induced in tissues from infected mice. The same factors were detected in the serum of patients with CHIKV-induced polyarthralgia and polyarthritis, with MCP-1 levels being particularly elevated. Bindarit (MCP inhibitor) treatment ameliorated CHIKV disease in mice. Histological analysis of muscle and joint tissues showed a reduction in inflammatory infiltrate in infectedmice treated with bindarit. These results suggest that bindarit may be useful in treating CHIKV-induced arthritides in humans.Facultad de Ciencias Exacta
