No full text
In the summer of 1981 the common flora and fauna of 28 species from Hornsund were collected, and the energy value, lipid content and global activity determined. It was found that the plants had low energy values, varying from 12.26 2 0.42 kJ g-' dry weight to 15.45 +1.00 kJ-' dry weight. The highest values in animals were noted in Liparis liparis (Pisces) 22.15 2 0.89kJg-' dry weight, and Sagitta ekgans (Chaetognatha) 20.64 2 0.49 kJ g-', the lowest being in Orchomene minuta (Amphipoda) 11.30 2 0.74 kJ g-' d.w. The lipid contents in the species studied were mostly low, the mean range from lowest to highest being 1.37-8.60% for plants and 7.14-31.93% for animals, and they were proportional to the energy value. Both the energy values and lipid contents were comparable to those in similar species from other waters. The global ? activity in the organisms analysed was not high; at the same time plants had a higher content of radioactive isotopes, 1.97-61.9 pCi g-' d.w., than animals, 5.2-17.8pCi g-' d.w

During the period August 1981 to July 1982, samples of six species of Amphipoda common to Hornsund were collected, and a study of their energy value changes was carried out. Only slight fluctuations of energy values were observed throughout the year, and no distinct seasonal changes as in the case of boreal organisms. Individuals of greater body size exhibit higher energy values. The lowest energy values 10.93 kJ g-' d.w. (SD = 3.01) and highest ash contents 29.8% (SD = 7.6) were found in small Amphipoda (e.g. Ischyrocerus anguipes), while species attaining greater body size were characterized by higher energy values and lower ash contents, for example Gammarellus homari 16.96 kJ g' d.w. (SD = OSO), and 22.9% (SD = 3.3%) ash

The use of multidimensional comparative Analysis for the assessment of the attractiveness of municipalities situated around the Krzna river

Tourism is an example of the economy branches which are displaying the most dynamic growth. Natural and cultural value of the Krzna River Valley render it suitable for the development of various tourism forms. Until recently, summer tourism was the dominant form but now agritourism has gained popularity, too. The competitiveness of communes located around the Krzna River was conditioned by both the attractiveness of the natural environment and the quality of accommodation facilities. A precise assessment of tourist competitiveness is quite complicated and to a large degree depends on the set of selected variables which reflect the tourist attractiveness of the communes examined.

The Chinese mitten crab Eriocheir sinensis Milne-Edwards, 1854 is a newcomer to the Baltic Sea. Previous studies have shown that since the 1940s single large specimens of this species have been caught annually in Polish waters. The invasion of the Chinese mitten crab has been reported from many European countries, including Poland, where it is especially abundant in the Odra Estuary. Of 186 specimens captured in Lake Dabie in August 1998, 45% were females and 55% males. The carapace width of these crabs varied between 53 and 88 mm and the average wet weight was 169 ± 45.3 g

This study was designed to investigate seasonal and annual changes in the benthic macrofauna in relation to changes in hydrogen sulphide concentration in the sediment and the oxygen content in the water column. Data were collected over a three-year period from 1994 to 1997. The benthic macrofauna inhabiting the sediments of the Gulf of Gdansk, in which H2S is permanently present, consists mostly of species with a high tolerance to oxygen deficiency and the presence of H2S. These species are: Macoma balthica, Harmothoe sarsi, Nereis diversicolor, Saduria entomon and Halicryptus spinulosus, as well as Pontoporeia femorata and Corophium volutator, which are more sensitive to these factors. In 1996-1997 a decline in the abundance of almost all benthic species, and especially of the bivalve M. balthica at all the stations was observed in comparison to 1994-1995

Micellar Parameters of Aqueous Solutions of Tween 20 and 60 at Different Temperatures: Volumetric and Viscometric Study

Density, viscosity and speed of sound of aqueous solutions of nonionic surfactants such as polyoxyethylene (20) sorbitan monolaurate (Tween 20) and polyoxyethylene (20) sorbitan monostearate (Tween 60) at T = 293, 303 and 313 K are reported. From these measured values different parameters such as, for example, isentropic compressibility, molecular free length, acoustic impedance, primary hydration numbers and internal pressure have been calculated and employed to discuss molecular packing, structural alteration and molecular interactions. The variation in these parameters with temperature indicates that the mobility of surfactant molecules increases the disordered state of the liquid (surfactant + water) due to irregular packing of the molecules. Also, for Tween 20 solutions, more conversion to bulk water of the structured water molecules was observed, obtaining lower compressibilities and higher values of hydration numbers as well as internal pressure for a given T

Changes in heavy metal accumulation in Enteromorpha spp. from the Gulf of Gdańsk

Abstract The contents of Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb were determined in samples of Enteromorpha spp. collected at Jurata at monthly intervals from November 1992 to October 1993, and at different stations on the coast of the Gulf of Gdańsk during one month. Of all the metals analysed, Zn occurs in the highest concentrations, followed by Cu, Pb and Cd. In the samples from Jurata all the four metals displayed considerable seasonal variations in their concentrations, the ranges for each element being Zn -29

Thermodynamic Parameters of Berberine with Kolliphor Mixtures Adsorption and Micellization

The poor solubility of berberine (Ber) in water limits its practical use. Its solubility can be increased, among other ways, by the addition of surfactants. Of the surfactants, Kolliphor® ELP (ELP) and Kolliphor® RH 40 (RH40) can be very useful in this respect. The increase of Ber’s solubility in water in the presence of ELP and RH40 should be reflected in the composition of the surface layers at the water-air interface and the micelles. The determined composition is reflected in the Gibbs energy of interactions of berberine with ELP and RH40 through the water phase and the standard Gibbs free energy, enthalpy, and entropy of adsorption and micellization. These energies were determined from the equations proposed by us, based on the Gibbs surface excess concentration of the Ber mixture with ELP and RH40, the activity of these compounds in the surface layer at the water-air interface and in the micelles obtained by the Hua and Rosen method, and the contributions of Ber, ELP, and RH40 to the reduction in the water surface tension. For this determination, the measurements of the surface tension of the aqueous solution of the Ber mixture with ELP or RH40 and that of the Ber mixture with these two surfactants, as well as the density and conductivity were performed. Moreover, the fluorescence emission spectra for the Ber + surfactant mixtures were recorded

SUMMARY Aim. The aim of the study was estimation of the rate of deletion 22q11.2 among psychiatric patients and an attempt at assessment of the degree in which this rate is influenced by coexistence of dismorphic features and congenital defects. Material and methods. Cytogenetic examination was performed in 255 patients with psychosis. Patients were divided into two groups: group I composed of 61 patients with psychosis and at least two phenotypic features characteristic of 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS), and group II composed of 194 patients with psychosis without phenotypic features of 22q11DS. Banding and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) techniques were applied. Results. 22q11.2 deletion was found in 3/61 patients of group I (4.9%) and in 3/255 all the psychiatric patients studied (1.2%). This incidence was significantly higher than in the general population (p<0.001). The frequency of the deletion among psychiatric patients revealing phenotypic features of 22q11DS: 3/61 (4.9%) (p<0.0001) was even higher. In all cases with the deletion, the phenotype was characteristic of 22q11DS. Conclusions. Firstly, 22q11.2 deletion was found to be 40 times more common among psychiatric patients than than the general population; sex chromosome aberrations were also significantly more common than in the general population. Secondly, the presence of dysmorphic features and some congenital defects in psychiatric patients increases the rate of 22q11.2 deletion significantly. schizophrenia / 22q11.2 deletion syndrome / phenotypic feature
