Is there a relationship between thyroid hormone levels and suicide attempt in adolescents?
Background: Thoughts about suicide are quite common in adolescent. While such thoughts can be caused by many reasons, the most wellknown of these are mood disorders. There are studies related to coexistence of thyroid pathologies and mood disorders in adult. Objectives: In this study, we aimed to investigate the difference of thyroid hormone levels in between adolescents with suicide attempt history and normal population. Methods: The study was prospective and was designed as a case-control study. Demographic characteristics of the patients were obtained and Serum fT3, fT4 and TSH levels were examined. Results: 222 cases were included in the study, including 101 cases and 121 controls. As for TSH levels, the mean serum levels of the whole group was 1.96 ± 1.08 mU/L, while the mean serum levels of the control group was 2.33 ± 1.5 mU/L and the mean serum levels of the case group was 0.50 ± 0.3 mU/L which revealed that the mean serum levels of the case group was significantly lower (p<0.01). Conclusion: It was found that serum TSH levels were significantly lower in case group than control group and the individuals with subclinical hyperthyroidism had more suicide attempts than the ones in control group
Protective effect of astaxanthin and metformin in the liver of rats in which the polycystic ovary syndrome model was formed by giving letrozole
Objective(s): In this study, the effects of astaxanthin on liver tissue in rats with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) were evaluated.Materials and Methods: Fifty-four Spraque-Dawley rats were divided into 9 groups: Groups: Control, PCOS, PCOS+Metformin (Met), PCOS+ Astaxanthin (ASX)10, PCOS+ASX20, PCOS+ASX40, PCOS+Met+ASX10, PCOS+Met+ASX20, and PCOS+Met+ASX40. PCOS was induced in female rats by oral administration of letrozole (1 mg/kg) for 21 days. Rats were treated with ASX (10 mg/kg), ASX (20 mg/kg), ASX (40 mg/kg), and metformin (20 mg/kg) for 7 days after PCOS induction. At the end of the experiment, malondialdehyde (MDA) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels were measured in the liver tissue. The liver was stained with hematoxylin/eosin for histological examination. Additionally, NF-kB and caspase 3 were analyzed immunohistochemically. Results: A remarkable abnormality was observed in the biochemical and histological parameters in the liver tissue of the PCOS model rats. Astaxanthin dose-dependently normalized the MDA level. Additionally, astaxanthin showed a protective effect by increasing the SOD level and increasing its antioxidant activities. We observed that administration of astaxanthin in addition to metformin applied in the standard was more effective. Caspase 3 and NF-kB immune positivity was lower in the groups given astaxanthin compared with PCOS. Histologically, it was observed that astaxanthin improved the deteriorated liver morphology in the letrozole-induced PCOS group. Conclusion: According to our results, it was observed that astaxanthin had antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic effects on PCOS in the treatment groups. Therefore, it was concluded that astaxanthin may have a protective effect against PCOS side effects
A simplified acute kidney injury predictor following transcatheter aortic valve implantation: ACEF score
Background: Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is an effective, less invasive treatment alternative for symptomatic severe aortic stenosis (AS). Acute kidney injury (AKI) following TAVI is a common complication and is associated with worse outcomes. The age, creatinine, ejection fraction (ACEF) score is a simple scoring method, including only three parameters: age, creatinine, and ejection fraction (EF). The score was well established in predicting AKI after coronary interventions.Aims: We aimed to evaluate whether this simple scoring method, ACEF, may predict a development of AKI in patients who underwent TAVI.Methods: A total of 173 consecutive patients with symptomatic severe AS who underwent TAVI were included retrospectively. The primary endpoint of the study was the development of AKI. Study population was divided into two groups according to the presence of AKI. The ACEF score was calculated with the formula: age/EF + 1 (if baseline creatinine >2 mg/dl).Results: Twenty-nine patients developed AKI. The median (interquartile range) ACEF score was 1.36 (1.20–1.58). The ACEF score was found to be an independent predictor of AKI (P <0.001). The ACEF score ≥1.36 predicted AKI development with a sensitivity of 96.6% and specificity of 58.8%. Moreover, hypertension, hemoglobin levels, contrast volume, and aortic valve area (AVA) were found to be independent predictors of AKI.Conclusions: Our study revealed that the ACEF score was an independent predictor of AKI. A simple and objective score might be very useful in predicting AKI development in patients undergoing TAVI
Biotargeted nanomedicines for cancer: six tenets before you begin
Biotargeted nanomedicines have captured the attention of academic and industrial scientists who have been motivated by the theoretical possibilities of the ‘magic bullet’ that was first conceptualized by Paul Ehrlich at the beginning of the 20th century. The Biotargeting Working Group, consisting of more than 50 pharmaceutical scientists, engineers, biologists and clinicians, has been formed as part of the National Cancer Institute’s Alliance for Nanotechnology in Cancer to harness collective wisdom in order to tackle conceptual and practical challenges in developing biotargeted nanomedicines for cancer. In modern science and medicine, it is impossible for any individual to be an expert in every aspect of biology, chemistry, materials science, pharmaceutics, toxicology, chemical engineering, imaging, physiology, oncology and regulatory affairs. Drawing on the expertise of leaders from each of these disciplines, this commentary highlights six tenets of biotargeted cancer nanomedicines in order to enable the translation of basic science into clinical practice
Omecamtiv mecarbil in chronic heart failure with reduced ejection fraction, GALACTIC‐HF: baseline characteristics and comparison with contemporary clinical trials
Aims:
The safety and efficacy of the novel selective cardiac myosin activator, omecamtiv mecarbil, in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) is tested in the Global Approach to Lowering Adverse Cardiac outcomes Through Improving Contractility in Heart Failure (GALACTIC‐HF) trial. Here we describe the baseline characteristics of participants in GALACTIC‐HF and how these compare with other contemporary trials.
Methods and Results:
Adults with established HFrEF, New York Heart Association functional class (NYHA) ≥ II, EF ≤35%, elevated natriuretic peptides and either current hospitalization for HF or history of hospitalization/ emergency department visit for HF within a year were randomized to either placebo or omecamtiv mecarbil (pharmacokinetic‐guided dosing: 25, 37.5 or 50 mg bid). 8256 patients [male (79%), non‐white (22%), mean age 65 years] were enrolled with a mean EF 27%, ischemic etiology in 54%, NYHA II 53% and III/IV 47%, and median NT‐proBNP 1971 pg/mL. HF therapies at baseline were among the most effectively employed in contemporary HF trials. GALACTIC‐HF randomized patients representative of recent HF registries and trials with substantial numbers of patients also having characteristics understudied in previous trials including more from North America (n = 1386), enrolled as inpatients (n = 2084), systolic blood pressure < 100 mmHg (n = 1127), estimated glomerular filtration rate < 30 mL/min/1.73 m2 (n = 528), and treated with sacubitril‐valsartan at baseline (n = 1594).
Conclusions:
GALACTIC‐HF enrolled a well‐treated, high‐risk population from both inpatient and outpatient settings, which will provide a definitive evaluation of the efficacy and safety of this novel therapy, as well as informing its potential future implementation
A Scenario-Based Analysis of Forest Product Transportation Using a Hybrid Fuzzy Multi-Criteria Decision-Making Method
The aim of this study is to reveal the weight values of the criteria that are effective in selecting the most suitable vehicle types in forest products transportation by using hybrid fuzzy multi-criteria decision-making method. According to different scenarios, the goal is to determine which vehicle alternative is the most suitable in given conditions. In the results obtained from the study, it is determined that the most important main criterion in determining the eligibility of vehicle alternatives in forest products transport is the environmental damage criterion, while the other main criteria are cost and operational performance, in order of importance. In the scope of the study, transportation scenarios including different operational conditions were created and the suitability of vehicle alternatives was evaluated according to the scenarios, taking into account CO2 emission and road surface damage risk criteria. Transportation of coniferous and broadleaved tree species makes a difference in vehicle suitability rankings according to transportation scenarios. In addition, it was observed that the variability in the amount of roundwoods to be transported affects the vehicle suitability rankings. It will be beneficial to consider the total weight of the forest product to be transported and the tree species in the selection vehicle type
Triboluminescent composite microspheres consisting of alginate and EuD(4)TEA crystals
Alginate is utilized to obtain luminescent composite microspheres containing europium tetrakis (dibenzoylmethide) triethylammonium (EuD4TEA) triboluminescent (TL) crystals. Na alginate is initially treated with Ca(II) and then Eu (III) so that physically-crosslinked alginate microspheres were obtained. EuD4TEA crystals are precipitated in situ on the surface of the spheres upon treatment with dibenzoylmethane (DBM) and triethylamine (TEA). The EuD4TEA/alginate composite spheres are swollen in aqueous system, the diameter of the microspheres increases from 180 up to 405 pm in 48 h. TL intensity of the spheres swollen in 1 h decreases 4 folds compared to dry spheres; however, it systematically increases as the swelling time is extended step-wise to 48 h. Swelling may develop structural homogenity in the microsphere that supresses the optical scattering and may lead to better transmittance of the TL signal. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved
DETERMINATION OF TEMPORAL CHANGES ON FOREST ROAD PAVEMENT WITH TERRESTRIAL LASER SCANNER
The aim of the study is to determine temporal change of degradations occurring on forest road pavement due to meteorologic factors and determine relations between meteorologic factors and pavement degradations in three month periods for one year. A terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) was used to determine the amount of degradation on forest road pavement. According to the results, mean monthly areal wearing was calculated as 49.6 m(2), mean monthly areal sediment accumulation was calculated as 58.6 m(2), while mean monthly volumetric wearing was calculated as -0.75 m(3) and mean monthly volumetric sediment accumulation was calculated as 0.51 m(3). Also, it was found that, total areal wearing values and total areal sediment accumulation values significantly different in three month periods for one year. In additon to this, volumetric pavement degradation (wearing and sediment accumulation) and areal wearing is positively related to periodic precipitation and precipitation intensity while total areal sediment accumulation is negatively related to periodic precipitation and precipitation intensity in three month periods for one year. Consequently, TLS system can be used effectively in monitoring and evaluating road pavement condition. Also, TLS system is useful and necessary system to obtain high accuracy data for periodic monitoring operation in all kind of engineering structures like forest roads
A Low-Profile DielectricWaveguide Altimeter Antenna
© 2020 URSI.In this paper, design and implementation of a compact, low-profile and low-cost altimeter antenna is presented. A top-open dielectric waveguide is utilized to obtain a radiation pattern that illuminates from 20 to 70 degrees on the elevation plane. The proposed antenna pair can be used efficiently as a radar altimeter antenna in the course of landing. The antenna can cope with high skin temperatures, especially in supersonic flights because a high-temperature resistant dielectric material is used. Satisfactory results are obtained from EM simulations and antenna measurements
