Dynamic Transitions in a Two Dimensional Associating Lattice Gas Model
Using Monte Carlo simulations we investigate some new aspects of the phase
diagram and the behavior of the diffusion coefficient in an associating lattice
gas (ALG) model on different regions of the phase diagram. The ALG model
combines a two dimensional lattice gas where particles interact through a soft
core potential and orientational degrees of freedom. The competition between
soft core potential and directional attractive forces results in a high density
liquid phase, a low density liquid phase, and a gas phase. Besides anomalies in
the behavior of the density with the temperature at constant pressure and of
the diffusion coefficient with density at constant temperature are also found.
The two liquid phases are separated by a coexistence line that ends in a
bicritical point. The low density liquid phase is separated from the gas phase
by a coexistence line that ends in tricritical point. The bicritical and
tricritical points are linked by a critical -line. The high density
liquid phase and the fluid phases are separated by a second critical
line. We then investigate how the diffusion coefficient behaves on different
regions of the chemical potential-temperature phase diagram. We find that
diffusivity undergoes two types of dynamic transitions: a fragile-to-strong
trans ition when the critical -line is crossed by decreasing the
temperature at a constant chemical potential; and a strong-to-strong transition
when the -critical line is crossed by decreasing the temperature at a
constant chemical potential.Comment: 22 page
Toxin Production By Isolates of Ceratocystis ulmi
Cuttings of two elm species, Ulmus pumila and U. hollandica \u27Belgica\u27, were used to assay toxin production by nine isolates of Ceratocystis ulmi representing collections from Asia, Europe, and North America. After 17 days of fungus growth in liquid culture, filtrates were collected and bioassayed by visual symptom expression over an approximate 10-hour period. A variation in toxin production was evident. One of the isolates from the Netherlands produced a low toxin titer. The other isolate from the Netherlands and the one from Asia produced highly significant symptoms on the resistant Siberian elm shoots and an Iowa isolate\u27s filtrate reaction was significant on this elm species

Liquid crystal phase and waterlike anomalies in a core-softened shoulder-dumbbells system
Using molecular dynamics we investigate the thermodynamics, dynamics and
structure of 250 diatomic molecules interacting by a core-softened potential.
This system exhibits thermodynamics, dynamics and structural anomalies: a
maximum in density-temperature plane at constante pressure and maximum and
minimum points in the diffusivity and translational order parameter against
density at constant temperature. Starting with very dense systems and
decreasing density the mobility at low temperatures first increases, reach a
maximum, then decreases, reach a minimum and finally increases. In the
pressure-temperature phase diagram the line of maximum translational order
parameter is located outside the line of diffusivity extrema that is enclosing
the temperature of maximum density line. We compare our results with the
monomeric system showing that the anisotropy due to the dumbbell leads to a
much larger solid phase and to the appearance of a liquid crystal phase. the
double ranged thermodynamic and dynamic anomalies.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figure
Diffusion Anomaly in a three dimensional lattice gas
We investigate the relation between thermodynamic and dynamic properties of
an associating lattice gas (ALG) model. The ALG combines a three dimensional
lattice gas with particles interacting through a soft core potential and
orientational degrees of freedom. From the competition between the directional
attractive forces and the soft core potential results two liquid phases, double
criticality and density anomaly. We study the mobility of the molecules in this
model by calculating the diffusion constant at a constant temperature, . We
show that has a maximum at a density and a minimum at a
density . Between these densities the diffusivity
differs from the one expected for normal liquids. We also show that in the
pressure-temperature phase-diagram the line of extrema in diffusivity is close
to the liquid-liquid critical point and it is partially inside the temperature
of maximum density (TMD) line
Liquid Polymorphism and Double Criticality in a Lattice Gas Model
We analyze the possible phase diagrams of a simple model for an associating
liquid proposed previously. Our two-dimensional lattice model combines
oreintati onal ice-like interactions and \"{}Van der Waals\"{} interactions
which may be repulsive, and in this case represent a penalty for distortion of
hydrogen bonds in the presence of extra molecules. These interactions can be
interpreted in terms of two competing distances, but not necessarily soft-core.
We present mean -field calculations and an exhaustive simulation study for
different parameters which represent relative strength of the bonding
interaction to the energy penalty for its distortion. As this ratio decreases,
a smooth disappearance of the doubl e criticality occurs. Possible connections
to liquid-liquid transitions of molecul ar liquids are suggested
The positive impact of a facilitated peer mentoring program on academic skills of women faculty
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In academic medicine, women physicians lag behind their male counterparts in advancement and promotion to leadership positions. Lack of mentoring, among other factors, has been reported to contribute to this disparity. Peer mentoring has been reported as a successful alternative to the dyadic mentoring model for women interested in improving their academic productivity. We describe a facilitated peer mentoring program in our institution's department of medicine.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Nineteen women enrolled in the program were divided into 5 groups. Each group had an assigned facilitator. Members of the respective groups met together with their facilitators at regular intervals during the 12 months of the project. A pre- and post-program evaluation consisting of a 25-item self-assessment of academic skills, self-efficacy, and academic career satisfaction was administered to each participant.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>At the end of 12 months, a total of 9 manuscripts were submitted to peer-reviewed journals, 6 of which are in press or have been published, and another 2 of which have been invited to be revised and resubmitted. At the end of the program, participants reported an increase in their satisfaction with academic achievement (mean score increase, 2.32 to 3.63; <it>P </it>= 0.0001), improvement in skills necessary to effectively search the medical literature (mean score increase, 3.32 to 4.05; <it>P </it>= 0.0009), an improvement in their ability to write a comprehensive review article (mean score increase, 2.89 to 3.63; <it>P </it>= 0.0017), and an improvement in their ability to critically evaluate the medical literature (mean score increased from 3.11 to 3.89; <it>P </it>= 0.0008).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This facilitated peer mentoring program demonstrated a positive impact on the academic skills and manuscript writing for junior women faculty. This 1-year program required minimal institutional resources, and suggests a need for further study of this and other mentoring programs for women faculty.</p
A philosophical analysis of the evidence-based medicine debate
BACKGROUND: The term "evidence-based medicine" (or EBM) was introduced about ten years ago, and there has been considerable debate about the value of EBM. However, this debate has sometimes been obscured by a lack of conceptual clarity concerning the nature and status of EBM. DISCUSSION: First, we note that EBM proponents have obscured the current debate by defining EBM in an overly broad, indeed almost vacuous, manner; we offer a clearer account of EBM and its relation to the alternative approaches to medicine. Second, while EBM proponents commonly cite the philosophical work of Thomas Kuhn and claim that EBM is a Kuhnian 'paradigm shift,' we argue that such claims are seriously mistaken and unduly polarize the EBM debate. Third, we suggest that it is much more fruitful to understand the relationship between EBM and its alternatives in light of a different philosophical metaphor: W.V. Quine's metaphor of the web of belief. Seen in this way, we argue that EBM is an approach to medical practice that is indeed importantly different from the alternatives. SUMMARY: We can have a more productive debate about the value of EBM by being clearer about the nature of EBM and its relationship to alternative approaches to medicine
