The tidally disturbed luminous compact blue galaxy Mkn 1087 and its surroundings
We present new broad-band optical and near-infrared CCD imaging together with
deep optical intermediate-resolution spectroscopy of Mkn 1087 and its
surrounding objects. We analyze the morphology and colors of the stellar
populations of the brightest objects, some of them star-formation areas, as
well as the kinematics, physical conditions and chemical composition of the
ionized gas associated with them. Mkn 1087 does not host an Active Galactic
Nucleus, but it could be a Luminous Compact Blue Galaxy. Although it was
classified as a suspected Wolf-Rayet galaxy, we do not detect the spectral
features of these sort of massive stars. Mkn 1087 shows morphological and
kinematical features that can be explained assuming that it is in interaction
with two nearby galaxies: the bright KPG 103a and a dwarf ()
star-forming companion. We argue that this dwarf companion is not a tidal
object but an external galaxy because of its low metallicity [12+log(O/H) =
8.24] with respect to the one derived for Mkn 1087 [12+log(O/H) = 8.57] and its
kinematics. Some of the non-stellar objects surrounding Mkn 1087 are connected
by bridges of matter with the main body, host star-formation events and show
similar abundances despite their different angular distances. These facts,
together their kinematics, suggest that they are tidal dwarf galaxies formed
from material stripped from Mkn 1087. A bright star-forming region at the south
of Mkn 1087 (knot #7) does not show indications of being a tidal galaxy or the
product of a merging process as suggested in previous works. We argue that Mkn
1087 and its surroundings should be considered a group of galaxies.Comment: Accepted by A&A, 21 pages, 13 figures, 8 table

The objective of this paper is to examine the EFQM Excellence Model as an enabler of E-procurement adoption and the effect on purchasing performance. The study utilized a cross-sectional telephone survey of a sample of Spanish manufacturing companies using multiple informants. A total of 200 firms responded making a total of 800 responses. Data was analyzed using structural equations modelling. The results indicate that the Business Excellence Enablers (Leadership, Strategy, People, Resources, and Processes) act as enablers of E-procurement and help to realize gains in purchasing performance
Nobody expects selfishness
Mechanisms supporting human ultra-cooperativeness are very much subject to debate. One psychological feature likely to be relevant is the formation of expectations, particularly about receiving cooperative or generous behavior from others. Without such expectations, social life will be seriously impeded and, in turn, expectations leading to satisfactory interactions can become norms and institutionalize cooperation. In this paper, we assess people's expectations of generosity in a series of controlled experiments using the dictator game. Despite differences in respective roles, involvement in the game, degree of social distance or variation of stakes, the results are conclusive: subjects seldom predict that dictators will behave selfishly (by choosing the Nash equilibrium action, namely giving nothing). The majority of subjects expect that dictators will choose the equal split. This implies that generous behavior is not only observed in the lab, but also expected by subjects. In addition, expectations are accurate, matching closely the donations observed and showing that as a society we have a good grasp of how we interact. Finally, correlation between expectations and actual behavior suggests that expectations can be an important ingredient of generous or cooperative behavior

Unraveling the mechanism of TTL genes in cellulose biosynthesis
As sessile organisms, plants require mechanisms to sense and respond to the challenging environment, that encompass both biotic and abiotic factors that results in differential development. In these conditions is essential to balance growth and stress responses. As cell walls shape plant growth, this differential growth response cause alterations to the plant cell wall where cellulose is the major component. Therefore, understanding the mechanisms that regulate cellulose biosynthesis is essential to develop strategies to improve plant production. In Arabidopsis, the TETRATRICOPEPTIDE THIOREDOXIN-LIKE (TTL) gene family is composed by four members (TTL1 to TTL4) and mutations in TTL1, TTL3, and TTL4 genes cause reduced growth under salt and osmotic stress due to defects in plant cell wall integrity. We observe association of TTL3 with most core components in traducing BR signalling, such as LRR-RLK BRI1 or GSK3 BIN2 that modulate cellulose biosynthesis through phosphorylating cellulose synthases. Here, we show that ttl mutants present defects in the plant cell wall, particularly in Isoxaben, salt or sucrose stress. Spinning disk microscopy in etiolated hypocotyls reveals that, TTL proteins are responsible for the cellulose synthase complex (CSC) stability in plasma membrane (PM) upon sucrose stress. Moreover, TTL3 associates with LRR-RLKs that have been shown to be important for cellulose biosynthesis such as FEI1 in the FEI1/FEI2/SOS5 pathway. We aim to investigate the mechanisms by which TTL proteins regulate CesA stability in PM under stress, using a combination of genetics, biochemical, and molecular and cell biology approaches.Universidad de Málaga. Molecular simulation of methane hydrate growth confined into a silica pore
Financiaciado para publicación en acceso aberto: Universidade de Vigo/CISUGThe growth of a methane hydrate seed within a silica slit pore of fixed width has been studied using All-
Atom Molecular Dynamics (AA-MD). An AA force field has been used to describe the molecules of the
solid silica substrate, with a-quartz crystalline structure. The crystallisation of hydrates in confined
geometries is not well understood yet, and the objective of this work is to study the hydrate growth
inside a silica pore using molecular simulation. Both NVT and NpT ensembles were used in the AA-MD
simulations to analyse the hydrate growth from an initial seed. Results showed that the boundary conditions
imposed by the nanometric slit pore yielded a hydrate with structural defects, filling the accessible
space between the silica walls. The water molecules which were not incorporated to the initial seed
hydrate formed a high density water layer trapped between the silica walls and the crystallised hydrate.
These results provide an interesting insight into the hydrate crystallisation process in confined geometries,
resembling those found in natural hydrate deposits.Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación | Ref. PID2021-125081NB-I00FEDER | Ref. SOE2/P1/P0823Xunta de Galicia | Ref. Bioinspired design of triboceramics: Learning from the anisotropic microfracture response of dental enamel under sliding contact
[EN] In the quest for novel ceramics for tribological applications via bioinspired design, the differences in the fracture modes that arise upon scratching relevant locations of ceramic-like tooth enamel are investigated. It is found that fracture initiates from weak rod-sheath interfaces at relatively low loads, independent of the sliding direction. However, the geometry and propagation of the cracks depends on the orientation of the interfaces relative to the maximum tensile stress: scratching along the occlusal surface propagates approximately sinusoidal cracks, parallel to the sliding direction, while scratching along the cross-section produces straight cracks that propagate normal (scratch parallel to occlusal surface) or parallel (scratch perpendicular to occlusal surface) to the sliding direction. The formation of cracks is hindered in scratching near the enamel-dentine junction. Implications for the microstructural design of triboceramics (bulks and coatings) with improved durability are discussed. The authors wish to thank Dr Florencio Monje Gil for kindly providing tooth specimens from his clinic (CICOM, Centro de Implantologia Cirugia Oral y Maxilofacial, Badajoz, Spain).
