Weak Riemannian manifolds from finite index subfactors
Let be a finite Jones' index inclusion of II factors, and
denote by their unitary groups. In this paper we study the
homogeneous space , which is a (infinite dimensional) differentiable
manifold, diffeomorphic to the orbit
of the Jones projection of the inclusion. We endow with a
Riemannian metric, by means of the trace on each tangent space. These are
pre-Hilbert spaces (the tangent spaces are not complete), therefore is a weak Riemannian manifold. We show that enjoys certain
properties similar to classic Hilbert-Riemann manifolds. Among them, metric
completeness of the geodesic distance, uniqueness of geodesics of the
Levi-Civita connection as minimal curves, and partial results on the existence
of minimal geodesics. For instance, around each point of ,
there is a ball (of uniform radius ) of
the usual norm of , such that any point in the ball is joined to
by a unique geodesic, which is shorter than any other piecewise smooth curve
lying inside this ball. We also give an intrinsic (algebraic) characterization
of the directions of degeneracy of the submanifold inclusion , where the last set denotes the Grassmann manifold
of the von Neumann algebra generated by and .Comment: 19 page
Projective spaces of a C*-algebra
Based on the projective matrix spaces studied by B. Schwarz and A. Zaks, we
study the notion of projective space associated to a C*-algebra A with a fixed
projection p. The resulting space P(p) admits a rich geometrical structure as a
holomorphic manifold and a homogeneous reductive space of the invertible group
of A. Moreover, several metrics (chordal, spherical, pseudo-chordal,
non-Euclidean - in Schwarz-Zaks terminology) are considered, allowing a
comparison among P(p), the Grassmann manifold of A and the space of positive
elements which are unitary with respect to the bilinear form induced by the
reflection e = 2p-1. Among several metrical results, we prove that geodesics
are unique and of minimal length when measured with the spherical and
non-Euclidean metrics.Comment: 26 pages, Late
Geometry of oblique projections
Let A be a unital C*-algebra. Denote by P the space of selfadjoint
projections of A. We study the relationship between P and the spaces of
projections P_a determined by the different involutions #_a induced by positive
invertible elements a in A. The maps f_p: P \to P_a sending p to the unique q
in P_a with the same range as p and \Omega_a: P_a \to P sending q to the
unitary part of the polar decomposition of the symmetry 2q-1 are shown to be
diffeomorphisms. We characterize the pairs of idempotents q, r in A with
|q-r|<1 such that there exists a positive element a in A verifying that q, r
are in P_a. In this case q and r can be joined by an unique short geodesic

Polarization and photometric observations of the gamma-ray blazar PG 1553+113
We present the results of an observational photo-polarimetry campaign of the
blazar PG 1553+113 at optical wavelengths. The blazar was recently detected at
very high energies (> 100 GeV) by the H.E.S.S and MAGIC gamma-ray Cherenkov
telescopes.
Our high-temporal resolution data show significant variations in the linear
polarization percentage and position angle at inter-night time-scales, while at
shorter (intra-night) time-scales both parameters varied less significantly, if
at all. Changes in the polarization angle seem to be common in gamma-ray
emitting blazars. Simultaneous differential photometry (through the B and R
bands) shows no significant variability in the total optical flux. We provide B
and R magnitudes, along with a finding chart, for a set of field stars suitable

Minimal matrices and the corresponding minimal curves on flag manifolds in low dimension
In general C*-algebras, elements with minimal norm in some equivalence class are introduced and characterized. We study the set of minimal hermitian matrices, in the case where the C*-algebra consists of 3 × 3 complex matrices, and the quotient is taken by the subalgebra of diagonal matrices. We thoroughly study the set of minimal matrices particularly because of its relation to the geometric problem of finding minimal curves in flag manifolds. For the flag manifold of 'four mutually orthogonal complex lines' in C4, it is shown that there are infinitely many minimal curves joining arbitrarily close points. In the case of the flag manifold of 'three mutually orthogonal complex lines' in C3, we show that the phenomenon of multiple minimal curves joining arbitrarily close points does not occur.Fil: Andruchow, Esteban. Minimal hermitian matrices with fixed entries outside the diagonal
We survey some results concerning the problem of finding the complex hermitian matrix or matrices of least supremum norm with variable diagonal. Some qualitative general results are given and more specific descriptions are shown for the 3 x 3 case. Gamma Ray Bursts with peculiar temporal asymmetry
Based on the study of temporal asymmetry of 631 gamma ray bursts from the
BATSE 3B catalog by Link and Epstein [Ap J 466, 764 (1996)], we identify the
population of bursts whose rising times are longer than their decays, thus
showing atypical profiles. We analyse their sky distribution, morphology,
time-space clustering and other average properties and compare them with those
associated with the bulk of the bursts. We show how most of the peculiar bursts
analysed are consistent with recent fireball models, but a fraction of bursts
(% of the total sample) appear to be inconsistent.Comment: mn style (included in the submission), 4 figures that must be printed

Polarization microvariability of BL Lac objects
We present the results of a systematic observational campaign designed to
search for microvariability in the optical polarization of BL Lac objects. We
have observed a sample formed by 8 X-ray-selected and 10 radio-selected
sources, looking for rapid changes in both the degree of linear polarization
and the corresponding polarization angle. The whole campaign was carried out
along the last three years, and most of the objects were observed at least on
two consecutive nights. The statistical properties of both classes of BL Lac
objects are compared, and some general conclusions on the nature of the
phenomenon are drawn. In general, radio selected sources seem to display higher
duty cycles for polarimetric microvariability and, on average, they have a
