    Mechanism of Cu-catalyzed iododeboronation : a description of ligand-enabled transmetalation, disproportionation, and turnover in Cu-mediated oxidative coupling reactions

A combination of structural and density functional theory (DFT) analyses has allowed determination of the identity of the reaction precatalyst with insight into each step of the catalytic cycle. Key findings include a rationale for ligand (phen) stoichiometry related to key turnover events─the ligand facilitates transmetalation via H-bonding to an organoboron boronate generated in situ and phen loss/gain is integral to the key oxidative events. These data provide a framework for understanding ligand effects on these key mechanistic processes, which underpin several classes of Cu-mediated oxidative coupling reactions.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Nanoscale Morphological and Chemical Changes of High Voltage Lithium–Manganese Rich NMC Composite Cathodes with Cycling

    Understanding the evolution of chemical composition and morphology of battery materials during electrochemical cycling is fundamental to extending battery cycle life and ensuring safety. This is particularly true for the much debated high energy density (high voltage) lithium–manganese rich cathode material of composition Li1 + xM1 – xO2 (M = Mn, Co, Ni). In this study we combine full-field transmission X-ray microscopy (TXM) with X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) to spatially resolve changes in chemical phase, oxidation state, and morphology within a high voltage cathode having nominal composition Li1.2Mn0.525Ni0.175Co0.1O2. Nanoscale microscopy with chemical/elemental sensitivity provides direct quantitative visualization of the cathode, and insights into failure. Single-pixel (∼30 nm) TXM XANES revealed changes in Mn chemistry with cycling, possibly to a spinel conformation and likely including some Mn(II), starting at the particle surface and proceeding inward. Morphological analysis of the particles revealed, with high resolution and statistical sampling, that the majority of particles adopted nonspherical shapes after 200 cycles. Multiple-energy tomography showed a more homogeneous association of transition metals in the pristine particle, which segregate significantly with cycling. Depletion of transition metals at the cathode surface occurs after just one cycle, likely driven by electrochemical reactions at the surface

    Transnational Dialogues in Afro-Latin American and Afro-Latinx Studies

    "Throughout the Americas, a range of societal shifts have advanced the need for a more transnational framework for studying the hemisphere, particularly the population of African descent in Latin America and its diasporic communities. Notably, contemporary Latin America has witnessed an expansion of social movements and policies addressing race, gender, and citizenship. In the U.S., the Midwest has experienced a dramatic increase in Spanish-Caribbean populations – from 33 percent in Pennsylvania to 229 percent in Ohio (Pew Research Center, 2008). Building on the momentum of the Afro-Latin American and Afro-Latinx Studies Initiative (ALALS), funded by a Pitt Seed Project grant in 2018, Transnational Dialogues seeks to expand transnational, transregional, and interdisciplinary research, education, and programming at the core of the ALALS initiative. In addition, established relationships with scholars in the departments of History, Hispanic Languages and Literatures, Administrative and Policy Studies in Education, the Center for Latin American Studies, and Hillman Library, make this a highly collaborative endeavor. Transnational Dialogues addresses all areas of the Plan for Pitt. Seven interrelated programs highlight the four key arenas: personalized and experiential education, curriculum development, professional development, and multidisciplinary collaboration and public engagement. The programs include a major conference, curriculum workshop, working group, and a professional development seminar abroad. These activities center scholarly exchange to foster research, educational excellence, foundational strength, and diversity. The experiential learning and personalized education programs include certificate concentrations, undergraduate summer research, and semester-long internships. Such opportunities promote academic engagement, diversity, inclusion, and global involvement. The overarching project positions the Dietrich School, the School of Education, the University Center for International Studies, and University Library System to engage in broad-scale and global research alliances that advance the mission of the University of Pittsburgh.

    Randomized controlled trial of Family Nurture Intervention in the NICU: assessments of length of stay, feasibility and safety

    Background: While survival rates for preterm infants have increased, the risk for adverse long-term neurodevelopmental and behavioral outcomes remains very high. In response to the need for novel, evidence-based interventions that prevent such outcomes, we have assessed Family Nurture Intervention (FNI), a novel dual mother-infant intervention implemented while the infant is in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Here, we report the first trial results, including the primary outcome measure, length of stay in the NICU and, the feasibility and safety of its implementation in a high acuity level IV NICU. Methods: The FNI trial is a single center, parallel-group, randomized controlled trial at Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital for mothers and their singleton or twin infants of 26–34 weeks gestation. Families were randomized to standard care (SC) or (FNI). FNI was implemented by nurture specialists trained to facilitate affective communication between mother and infant during specified calming interactions. These interactions included scent cloth exchange, sustained touch, vocal soothing and eye contact, wrapped or skin-to-skin holding, plus family-based support interactions. Results: A total of 826 infants born between 26 and 34 weeks during the 3.5 year study period were admitted to the NICU. After infant and mother screening plus exclusion due to circumstances that prevented the family from participating, 373 infants were eligible for the study. Of these, we were unable to schedule a consent meeting with 56, and consent was withheld by 165. Consent was obtained for 150 infants from 115 families. The infants were block randomized to groups of N = 78, FNI and N = 72, SC. Sixteen (9.6%) of the randomized infants did not complete the study to home discharge, 7% of those randomized to SC and 12% of FNI infants. Mothers in the intervention group engaged in 3 to 4 facilitated one- to two-hour sessions/week. Intent to treat analyses revealed no significant difference between groups in medical complications. The mean length of stay was not significantly affected by the intervention. Conclusion: There was no significant effect demonstrated with this intervention amount on the primary short-term outcome, length of stay. FNI can be safely and feasibly implemented within a level IV NICU

    Aboriginal nurses: Insights from a national study

Further reproduction is prohibited.Aboriginal registered nurses have been identified as an essential group in the delivery of health services in First Nations communities. Despite this, there is a lack of information about this group of nurses in Canada. This article presents information about this group taken from two components of a national study, The Nature of Nursing Practice In Rural and Remote Canada: documentary analysis and a national survey of nurses. The Aboriginal nurse participants were predominantly female, between the ages of 40 and 49, diploma prepared and with licensure for less than 10 years. The survey data showed 41.4 per cent returned to their home communities to work. The participants noted how they enjoyed the challenges of rural and remote nursing and wanted to raise their families in these small communities. They have been able to create supportive work environments, particularly with their nursing colleagues. The nurses are committed to working in rural and remote communities

    An Excess of Mid-Infrared Emission from the Type Iax SN 2014dt

    Supernovae Type Iax (SNe Iax) are less energetic and less luminous than typical thermonuclear explosions. A suggested explanation for the observed characteristics of this subclass is a binary progenitor system consisting of a CO white dwarf primary accreting from a helium star companion. A single-degenerate explosion channel might be expected to result in a dense circumstellar medium (CSM), although no evidence for such a CSM has yet been observed for this subclass. Here we present recent Spitzer observations of the SN Iax 2014dt obtained by the SPIRITS program nearly one year post-explosion that reveal a strong mid-IR excess over the expected fluxes of more normal SNe Ia. This excess is consistent with 10^(−5) M_⊙ of newly formed dust, which would be the first time that newly formed dust has been observed to form in a Type Ia. The excess, however, is also consistent with a dusty CSM that was likely formed in pre-explosion mass-loss, thereby suggesting a single degenerate progenitor system. Compared to other SNe Ia that show significant shock interaction (SNe Ia-CSM) and interacting core-collapse events (SNe IIn), this dust shell in SN 2014dt is less massive. We consider the implications that such a pre-existing dust shell has for the progenitor system, including a binary system with a mass donor that is a red giant, a red supergiant, or an asymptotic giant branch star
