Critical connectedness of thin arithmetical discrete planes
An arithmetical discrete plane is said to have critical connecting thickness
if its thickness is equal to the infimum of the set of values that preserve its
-connectedness. This infimum thickness can be computed thanks to the fully
subtractive algorithm. This multidimensional continued fraction algorithm
consists, in its linear form, in subtracting the smallest entry to the other
ones. We provide a characterization of the discrete planes with critical
thickness that have zero intercept and that are -connected. Our tools rely
on the notion of dual substitution which is a geometric version of the usual
notion of substitution acting on words. We associate with the fully subtractive
algorithm a set of substitutions whose incidence matrix is provided by the
matrices of the algorithm, and prove that their geometric counterparts generate

Reduced Fire Severity offers Near-term Buffer to climate-driven declines in conifer resilience across the western United States
Increasing fire severity and warmer, drier postfire conditions are making forests in the western United States (West) vulnerable to ecological transformation. Yet, the relative importance of and interactions between these drivers of forest change remain unresolved, particularly over upcoming decades. Here, we assess how the interactive impacts of changing climate and wildfire activity influenced conifer regeneration after 334 wildfires, using a dataset of postfire conifer regeneration from 10,230 field plots. Our findings highlight declining regeneration capacity across the West over the past four decades for the eight dominant conifer species studied. Postfire regeneration is sensitive to high-severity fire, which limits seed availability, and postfire climate, which influences seedling establishment. In the near-term, projected differences in recruitment probability between low- and high-severity fire scenarios were larger than projected climate change impacts for most species, suggesting that reductions in fire severity, and resultant impacts on seed availability, could partially offset expected climate-driven declines in postfire regeneration. Across 40 to 42% of the study area, we project postfire conifer regeneration to be likely following low-severity but not high-severity fire under future climate scenarios (2031 to 2050). However, increasingly warm, dry climate conditions are projected to eventually outweigh the influence of fire severity and seed availability. The percent of the study area considered unlikely to experience conifer regeneration, regardless of fire severity, increased from 5% in 1981 to 2000 to 26 to 31% by mid-century, highlighting a limited time window over which management actions that reduce fire severity may effectively support postfire conifer regeneration
Angle-dependent magnetoresistance in the weakly incoherent interlayer transport regime
We present comparative studies of the orientation effect of a strong magnetic
field on the interlayer resistance of -(BEDT-TTF)KHg(SCN)
samples characterized by different crystal quality. We find striking
differences in their behavior which is attributed to the breakdown of the
coherent charge transport across the layers in the lower quality sample. In the
latter case, the nonoscillating magnetoresistance background is essentially a
function of only the out-of-plane field component, in contradiction to the

A Modeling Framework to Assess Strategies Alignment based on Collaborative Network Emotions
[DE] The Collaborative Networks (CN) discipline has been largely studied in last decades, addressing different problems and proposing solutions for the robust establishment of collaborative processes, within the enterprises willing to collaborate. The main aim of CN research is, therefore, to generate approaches that enable creating effective relationships in the long term, to achieve stable and agile alliances. The concept of alignment among the CN partners has been considered since the beginning of CN research. Nevertheless, novel perspectives of study in CN, such as the consideration of collaborative emotional states, within the CN, have been introduced in recent years. This paper connects the research area of strategies alignment and the CN emotion models. Parallel factor analysis of 4.2K excitation-emission matrices for the direct determination of dibenzopyrene isomers in coal-tar samples with a cryogenic fiber optic probe coupled to a commercial spectrofluorimeter
Several studies have shown high concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in living spaces and soil adjacent to parking lots sealed with coal-tar-based products. Recent attention has been paid to the presence of seven PAHs in coal-tar samples ? namely, benz[a]anthracene, benzo[k]-fluoranthene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[a]pyrene, chrysene, dibenz[a,h]anthracene, and indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene ? and their association to significant increases in estimated excess lifetime cancer risk for nearby residents. Herein, we present an analytical approach to screen the presence of five highly toxic, high-molecular weight PAHs (HMW-PAHs) in coal-tar samples. These include dibenzo[a,l]pyrene, dibenzo[a,i]pyrene, dibenzo[a,e]pyrene, dibnezo[a,h]pyrene and naphtho[2,3-a]pyrene. Their direct analysis ? no without chromatographic separation ? - in a reference coal-tar sample is made possible with the combination of excitation-emission matrices (EEMs) and parallel-factor analysis (PARAFAC). EEMs are recorded at 4.2 K with the aid of a cryogenic fiber optic probe and a commercial spectrofluorimeter. The simplicity of the experimental procedure and the excellent analytical figures of merit demonstrate the screening potential of this environmentally friendly approach for the routine analysis of numerous coal-tar samples.Fil: Moore, Anthony F. Measuring Dislocation Density in Aluminum with Resonant Ultrasound Spectroscopy
Dislocations in a material will, when present in enough numbers, change the
speed of propagation of elastic waves. Consequently, two material samples,
differing only in dislocation density, will have different elastic constants, a
quantity that can be measured using Resonant Ultrasound Spectroscopy.
Measurements of this effect on aluminum samples are reported. They compare well

The Role of Gas in the Merging of Massive Black Holes in Galactic Nuclei. I. Black Hole Merging in a Spherical Gas Cloud
Using high-resolution SPH numerical simulations, we investigate the effects
of gas on the inspiral and merger of a massive black hole binary. This study is
motivated by both observational and theoretical work that indicate the presence
of large amounts of gas in the central regions of merging galaxies. N-body
simulations have shown that the coalescence of a massive black hole binary
eventually stalls in a stellar background. However, our simulations suggest
that the massive black hole binary will finally merge if it is embedded in a
gaseous background. Here we present results in which the gas is assumed to be
initially spherical with a relatively smooth distribution. In the early
evolution of the binary, the separation dimishes due to the gravitational drag
exerted by the background gas. In the later stages, when the binary dominates
the gravitational potential in its vicinity, the medium responds by forming an
ellipsoidal density enhancement whose axis lags behind the binary axis, and
this offset produces a torque on the binary that causes continuing loss of
angular momentum and is able to reduce the binary separation to distances where
gravitational radiation is efficient. Assuming typical parameters from
observations of Ultra Luminous Infrared Galaxies, we predict that a black hole
binary will merge within yrs; therefore these results imply that in a
merger of gas-rich galaxies, any massive central black holes will coalescence
soon after the galaxies merge. Our work thus supports scenarios of massive
black hole evolution and growth where hierarchical merging plays an important
role. The final coalescence of the black holes leads to gravitational radiation
emission that would be detectable up to high redshift by LISA. We show that
