Pressure, compressibility, and contact of the two-dimensional attractive Fermi gas
Using ab initio lattice methods, we calculate the finite temperature
thermodynamics of homogeneous two-dimensional spin-1/2 fermions with attractive
short-range interactions. We present results for the density, pressure,
compressibility, and quantum anomaly (i.e. Tan's contact) for a wide range of
temperatures and coupling strengths, focusing on the unpolarized case. Within
our statistical and systematic uncertainties, our prediction for the density
equation of state differs quantitatively from the prediction by Luttinger-Ward
theory in the strongly coupled region of parameter space, but otherwise agrees
well with it. We also compare our calculations with the second- and third-order
virial expansion, with which they are in excellent agreement in the

Energy, contact, and density profiles of one-dimensional fermions in a harmonic trap via non-uniform lattice Monte Carlo
We determine the ground-state energy and Tan's contact of attractively
interacting few-fermion systems in a one-dimensional harmonic trap, for a range
of couplings and particle numbers. Complementing those results, we show the
corresponding density profiles. The calculations were performed with a new
lattice Monte Carlo approach based on a non-uniform discretization of space,
defined via Gauss-Hermite quadrature points and weights. This particular
coordinate basis is natural for systems in harmonic traps, and can be
generalized to traps of other shapes. In all cases, it yields a
position-dependent coupling and a corresponding non-uniform
Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation. The resulting path integral is performed
with hybrid Monte Carlo as a proof of principle for calculations at finite
temperature and in higher dimensions. We present results for N=4,...,20
particles (although the method can be extended beyond that) to cover the range
from few- to many-particle systems. This method is also exact up to statistical
and systematic uncertainties, which we account for -- and thus also represents
the first ab initio calculation of this system, providing a benchmark for other

The national land use data program of the US Geological Survey
The Land Use Data and Analysis (LUDA) Program which provides a systematic and comprehensive collection and analysis of land use and land cover data on a nationwide basis is described. Maps are compiled at about 1:125,000 scale showing present land use/cover at Level II of a land use/cover classification system developed by the U.S. Geological Survey in conjunction with other Federal and state agencies and other users. For each of the land use/cover maps produced at 1:125,000 scale, overlays are also compiled showing Federal land ownership, river basins and subbasins, counties, and census county subdivisions. The program utilizes the advanced technology of the Special Mapping Center of the U.S. Geological Survey, high altitude NASA photographs, aerial photographs acquired for the USGS Topographic Division's mapping program, and LANDSAT data in complementary ways
Gravitational waveforms from the evaporating ACO cosmic string loop
The linearly polarized gravitational waveforms from a certain type of
rotating, evaporating cosmic string - the Allen-Casper-Ottewill loop - are
constructed and plotted over the lifetime of the loop. The formulas for the
waveforms are simple and exact, and describe waves which attenuate
self-similarly, with the amplitude and period of the waves falling off linearly

Automatic transponder
A method and apparatus for the automatic, remote measurement of the internal delay time of a transponder at the time of operation is provided. A small portion of the transmitted signal of the transponder is converted to the receive signal frequency of the transponder and supplied to the input of the transponder. The elapsed time between the receive signal locally generated and the receive signal causing the transmission of the transmitted signal is measured, said time being representative of or equal to the internal delay time of the transponder at the time of operation
Quantum Cosmological Relational Model of Shape and Scale in 1-d
Relational particle models are useful toy models for quantum cosmology and
the problem of time in quantum general relativity. This paper shows how to
extend existing work on concrete examples of relational particle models in 1-d
to include a notion of scale. This is useful as regards forming a tight analogy
with quantum cosmology and the emergent semiclassical time and hidden time
approaches to the problem of time. This paper shows furthermore that the
correspondence between relational particle models and classical and quantum
cosmology can be strengthened using judicious choices of the mechanical
potential. This gives relational particle mechanics models with analogues of
spatial curvature, cosmological constant, dust and radiation terms. A number of
these models are then tractable at the quantum level. These models can be used
to study important issues 1) in canonical quantum gravity: the problem of time,
the semiclassical approach to it and timeless approaches to it (such as the
naive Schrodinger interpretation and records theory). 2) In quantum cosmology,
such as in the investigation of uniform states, robustness, and the qualitative

New interpretation of variational principles for gauge theories. I. Cyclic coordinate alternative to ADM split
I show how there is an ambiguity in how one treats auxiliary variables in
gauge theories including general relativity cast as 3 + 1 geometrodynamics.
Auxiliary variables may be treated pre-variationally as multiplier coordinates
or as the velocities corresponding to cyclic coordinates. The latter treatment
works through the physical meaninglessness of auxiliary variables' values
applying also to the end points (or end spatial hypersurfaces) of the
variation, so that these are free rather than fixed. [This is also known as
variation with natural boundary conditions.] Further principles of dynamics
workings such as Routhian reduction and the Dirac procedure are shown to have
parallel counterparts for this new formalism. One advantage of the new scheme
is that the corresponding actions are more manifestly relational. While the
electric potential is usually regarded as a multiplier coordinate and Arnowitt,
Deser and Misner have regarded the lapse and shift likewise, this paper's
scheme considers new {\it flux}, {\it instant} and {\it grid} variables whose
corresponding velocities are, respectively, the abovementioned previously used
variables. This paper's way of thinking about gauge theory furthermore admits
interesting generalizations, which shall be provided in a second paper.Comment: 11 page
Mobile radio alternative systems study. Volume 1: Traffic model
The markets for mobile radio services in non-urban areas of the United States are examined for the years 1985-2000. Three market categories are identified. New Services are defined as those for which there are different expressed ideas but which are not now met by any application of available technology. The complete fulfillment of the needs requires nationwide radio access to vehicles without knowledge of vehicle location, wideband data transmission from remote sites, one- and two way exchange of short data and control messages between vehicles and dispatch or control centers, and automatic vehicle location (surveillance). The commercial and public services market of interest to the study is drawn from existing users of mobile radio in non-urban areas who are dissatisfied with the geographical range or coverage of their systems. The mobile radio telephone market comprises potential users who require access to the public switched telephone network in areas that are not likely to be served by the traditional growth patterns of terrestrial mobile telephone services. Conservative, likely, and optimistic estimates of the markets are presented in terms of numbers of vehicles that will be served and the radio traffic they will generate
ATS-5 trilateration support
The development of an L-band trilateration network capable of locating the ATS-5 satellite, determining the satellite's orbital elements, and predicting the satellite position was investigated. An automatic tone-code ranging transponder was used to compare ranging measurements and communications reliability for the VHF and L-band. The L-band transponder network, analytical techniques, and the determination of the Kepler orbit parameters are described along with the calibration procedures, operation procedures, and verification of trilateration position
Position surveillance using one active ranging satellite and time-of-arrival of a signal from an independent satellite
Position surveillance using one active ranging/communication satellite and the time-of-arrival of signals from an independent satellite was shown to be feasible and practical. A towboat on the Mississippi River was equipped with a tone-code ranging transponder and a receiver tuned to the timing signals of the GOES satellite. A similar transponder was located at the office of the towing company. Tone-code ranging interrogations were transmitted from the General Electric Earth Station Laboratory through ATS-6 to the towboat and to the ground truth transponder office. Their automatic responses included digital transmissions of time-of-arrival measurements derived from the GOES signals. The Earth Station Laboratory determined ranges from the satellites to the towboat and computed position fixes. The ATS-6 lines-of-position were more precise than 0.1 NMi, 1 sigma, and the GOES lines-of-position were more precise than 1.6 NMi, 1 sigma. High quality voice communications were accomplished with the transponders using a nondirectional antenna on the towboat. The simple and effective surveillance technique merits further evaluation using operational maritime satellites
