M-FISH analysis shows that complex chromosome aberrations induced by α-particle tracks are cumulative products of localised rearrangements
Complex chromosome aberrations are characteristically induced after exposure to low doses of densely ionising radiation, but little is understood about their formation. To address this, we irradiated human peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) in vitro with 0.5 Gy densely ionising α-particles (mean of 1 α-particle/cell) and analysed the chromosome aberrations produced using 24-colour M-FISH. Our data suggest that complex formation is a consequence of direct nuclear α-particle traversal and show that the likely product of illegitimate repair of damage from a single α-particle is a single complex exchange. From an assessment of the ‘cycle structure’ of each complex exchange we predict α-particle-induced damage to be repaired at specific localised sites, and complexes to be formed as cumulative products of this repair

Effect of linear energy transfer (LET) on complexity of alpha-particle-induced chromosome aberrations in human CD34+ cells.
The aim of this study was to assess the relative influence of linear energy transfer (LET) of α-particles on chromosome aberration complexity in the absence of significant other track structure differences. To do this we irradiated human haemopoietic stem cells (CD34+) with The aim of this study was to assess the relative influence of linear energy transfer (LET) of α-particles of various incident LET values (110 - 152 keV/µm, with mean LETs through the cell of 119 – 182 keV/µm) at an equi-fluence of approximately 1 α-particle/cell and assayed for chromosome aberrations by m-FISH. Based on a single harvest time to collect early division mitosis , complex aberrations were observed at comparable frequencies irrespective of incident LET, however when expressed as a proportion of the total exchanges detected, their occurrence was seen to increase with increasing LET. Cycle analysis to predict theoretical DNA double strand break rejoining cycles was also carried out on all complex chromosome aberrations detected. By doing this we found that the majority of complex aberrations are formed in single non-reducible cycles that involve just 2 or 3 different chromosomes and 3 or 4 different breaks. Each non-reducible cycle is suggested to represent ‘an area’ of finite size within the nucleus where double strand break repair occurs. We suggest that local density of damage induced and proximity of independent repair areas within the interphase nucleus determine the complexity of aberration resolved in metaphase. Overall, the most likely outcome of a single nuclear traversal of a single α-particle in CD34+ cells is a single chromosome aberration per damaged cell. As the incident LET of the α-particle increases, the likelihood of this aberration being classed as complex is greater
Peer review and citation data in predicting university rankings, a large-scale analysis
Most Performance-based Research Funding Systems (PRFS) draw on peer review and bibliometric indicators, two different method- ologies which are sometimes combined. A common argument against the use of indicators in such research evaluation exercises is their low corre- lation at the article level with peer review judgments. In this study, we analyse 191,000 papers from 154 higher education institutes which were peer reviewed in a national research evaluation exercise. We combine these data with 6.95 million citations to the original papers. We show that when citation-based indicators are applied at the institutional or departmental level, rather than at the level of individual papers, surpris- ingly large correlations with peer review judgments can be observed, up to r <= 0.802, n = 37, p < 0.001 for some disciplines. In our evaluation of ranking prediction performance based on citation data, we show we can reduce the mean rank prediction error by 25% compared to previous work. This suggests that citation-based indicators are sufficiently aligned with peer review results at the institutional level to be used to lessen the overall burden of peer review on national evaluation exercises leading to considerable cost savings
Standardising terminology and notation for the analysis of demographic processes in marked populations
The development of statistical methods for the analysis of demographic processes in marked animal populations has brought with it the challenges of communication between the disciplines of statistics, ecology, evolutionary biology and computer science. In order to aid communication and comprehension, we sought to root out a number of cases of ambiguity, redundancy and inaccuracy in notation and terminology that have developed in the literature. We invited all working in this field to submit topics for resolution and to express their own views. In the ensuing discussion forum it was then possible to establish a series of general principles which were, almost without exception, unanimously accepted. Here we set out the background to the areas of confusion, how these were debated and the conclusions which were reached in each case. WESTT (Workload, Error, Situational Awareness, Time and Teamwork): An analytical prototyping system for command and control
Modern developments in the use of information technology within command and control allow unprecedented scope for flexibility in the way teams deal with tasks. These developments, together with the increased recognition of the importance of knowledge management within teams present difficulties for the analyst in terms of evaluating the impacts of changes to task composition or team membership. In this paper an approach to this problem is presented that represents team behaviour in terms of three linked networks (representing task, social network structure and knowledge) within the integrative WESTT software tool. In addition, by automating analyses of workload and error based on the same data that generate the networks, WESTT allows the user to engage in the process of rapid and iterative “analytical prototyping”. For purposes of illustration an example of the use of this technique with regard to a simple tactical vignette is presented

The radiation of cynodonts and the ground plan of mammalian morphological diversity
Cynodont therapsids diversified extensively after the Permo-Triassic mass extinction event, and gave rise to mammals in the Jurassic. We use an enlarged and revised dataset of discrete skeletal characters to build a new phylogeny for all main cynodont clades from the Late Permian to the Early Jurassic, and we analyse models of morphological diversification in the group. Basal taxa and epicynodonts are paraphyletic relative to eucynodonts, and the latter are divided into cynognathians and probainognathians, with tritylodonts and mammals forming sister groups. Disparity analyses reveal a heterogeneous distribution of cynodonts in a morphospace derived from cladistic characters. Pairwise morphological distances are weakly correlated with phylogenetic distances. Comparisons of disparity by groups and through time are non-significant, especially after the data are rarefied. A disparity peak occurs in the Early/Middle Triassic, after which period the mean disparity fluctuates little. Cynognathians were characterized by high evolutionary rates and high diversity early in their history, whereas probainognathian rates were low. Community structure may have been instrumental in imposing different rates on the two clades
Screening families of patients with premature coronary heart disease to identify avoidable cardiovascular risk: a cross-sectional study of family members and a general population comparison group
<b>Background:</b>
Primary prevention should be targeted at individuals with high global cardiovascular risk, but research is lacking on how best to identify such individuals in the general population. Family history is a good proxy measure of global risk and may provide an efficient mechanism for identifying high risk individuals. The aim was to test the feasibility of using patients with premature cardiovascular disease to recruit family members as a means of identifying and screening high-risk individuals.
<b>Findings:</b>
We recruited family members of 50 patients attending a cardiology clinic for premature coronary heart disease (CHD). We compared their cardiovascular risk with a general population control group, and determined their perception of their risk and current level of screening. 103 (36%) family members attended screening (27 siblings, 48 adult offspring and 28 partners). Five (5%) had prevalent CHD. A significantly higher percentage had an ASSIGN risk score >20% compared with the general population (13% versus 2%, p < 0.001). Only 37% of family members were aware they were at increased risk and only 50% had had their blood pressure and serum cholesterol level checked in the previous three years.
<b>Conclusions:</b>
Patients attending hospital for premature CHD provide a mechanism to contact family members and this can identify individuals with a high global risk who are not currently screened
