Aspect ratio analysis for ground states of bosons in anisotropic traps

Characteristics of the initial condensate in the recent experiment on Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of 87{}^{87}Rb atoms in an anisotropic magnetic trap is discussed. Given the aspect ratio RR, the quality of BEC is estimated. A simple analytical Ansatz for the initial condensate wave function is proposed as a function of the aspect ratio which, in contrast to the Baym-Pethick trial wave function, reproduces both the weak and the strong intaraction limits and which is in better agreement with numerical results than the latter.Comment: 12 pages, latex, 3 figures added, minor corrections; to appear in J. Spontaneous superconductivity and optical properties of high-Tc cuprates

We suggest that the high temperature superconductivity in cuprate compounds may emerge due to interaction between copper-oxygen layers mediated by in-plane plasmons. The strength of the interaction is determined by the c-axis geometry and by the ab-plane optical properties. Without making reference to any particular in-plane mechanism of superconductivity, we show that the interlayer interaction favors spontaneous appearance of the superconductivity in the layers. At a qualitative level the model describes correctly the dependence of the transition temperature on the interlayer distance, and on the number of adjacent layers in multilayered homologous compounds. Moreover, the model has a potential to explain (i) a mismatch between the optimal doping levels for critical temperature and superconducting density and (ii) a universal scaling relation between the dc-conductivity, the superfluid density, and the superconducting transition temperature.Comment: 4.4 pages, 2 figures; v2 matches the published version (clarifying remarks and references are added

'If I cannot access services then there is no reason for me to test': the impact of health service charges on HIV testing and treatment amongst migrants in England

    Get PDF
Policy governing entitlement to access government health care for foreign nationals in England is a subject of debate, controversy and confusion. Of particular concern to health providers has been the impact of National Health Service charges on delaying HIV testing and anti-retroviral treatment uptake and adherence amongst certain migrant groups. Data obtained through focus groups with 70 migrants from southern Africa, suggest that confusion over health care entitlements exists amongst those seeking health care and is reported amongst health service providers. This confusion, as well as financial difficulties and fears over deportation facing some migrants, can in turn be a factor influencing their decisions to avoid formal health services, resort to alternative and often ineffective or potentially adverse forms of therapy, and delay HIV testing and treatment uptake

    Coarse-graining a restricted solid-on-solid model

A procedure suggested by Vvedensky for obtaining continuum equations as the coarse-grained limit of discrete models is applied to the restricted solid-on-solid model with both adsorption and desorption. Using an expansion of the master equation, discrete Langevin equations are derived; these agree quantitatively with direct simulation of the model. From these, a continuum differential equation is derived, and the model is found to exhibit either Edwards-Wilkinson or Kardar-Parisi-Zhang exponents, as expected from symmetry arguments. The coefficients of the resulting continuum equation remain well-defined in the coarse-grained limit.Comment: Accepted for pubication in PR

Invasion threshold in heterogeneous metapopulation networks

We study the dynamics of epidemic and reaction-diffusion processes in metapopulation models with heterogeneous connectivity pattern. In SIR-like processes, along with the standard local epidemic threshold, the system exhibits a global invasion threshold. We provide an explicit expression of the threshold that sets a critical value of the diffusion/mobility rate below which the epidemic is not able to spread to a macroscopic fraction of subpopulations. The invasion threshold is found to be affected by the topological fluctuations of the metapopulation network. The presented results provide a general framework for the understanding of the effect of travel restrictions in epidemic containment.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

Superconducting correlations in ultra-small metallic grains

To describe the crossover from the bulk BCS superconductivity to a fluctuation-dominated regime in ultrasmall metallic grains, new order parameters and correlation functions, such as ``parity gap'' and ``pair-mixing correlation function'', have been recently introduced. In this paper, we discuss the small-grain behaviour of the Penrose-Onsager-Yang off-diagonal long-range order (ODLRO) parameter in a pseudo-spin representation. Relations between the ODLRO parameter and those mentioned above are established through analytical and numerical calculations.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figur
