Ultrastructural localization of extracellular matrix proteins of the lymph node cortex: evidence supporting the reticular network as a pathway for lymphocyte migration
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The lymph node (LN) is a crossroads of blood and lymphatic vessels allowing circulating lymphocytes to efficiently recognize foreign molecules displayed on antigen presenting cells. Increasing evidence indicates that after crossing high endothelial venules, lymphocytes migrate within the node along the reticular network (RN), a scaffold of fibers enwrapped by fibroblastic reticular cells (FRC). Light microscopy has shown that the RN contains specific extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins, which are putative molecular "footholds" for migration, and are known ligands for lymphocyte integrin adhesion receptors.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>To investigate whether ECM proteins of the RN are present on the outer surface of the FRC and are thus accessible to migrating lymphocytes, ultrastructural immunohistochemical staining of cynomolgus monkey LN was performed using antibodies to human ECM proteins that were successfully employed at the light microscopic level. The fibrillar collagens I and III were observed primarily within the reticular network fibers themselves. In contrast, the matrix proteins laminin, fibronectin, collagen IV, and tenascin were observed within the reticular fibers and also on the outer membrane surface of the FRC.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>These findings suggest a molecular basis for how the RN functions as a pathway for lymphocyte migration within the lymph node.</p
Microwave-frequency scanning gate microscopy of a Si/SiGe double quantum dot
Conventional quantum transport methods can provide quantitative information
on spin, orbital, and valley states in quantum dots, but often lack spatial
resolution. Scanning tunneling microscopy, on the other hand, provides
exquisite spatial resolution of the local electronic density of states, but
often at the expense of speed. Working to combine the spatial resolution and
energy sensitivity of scanning probe microscopy with the speed of microwave
measurements, we couple a metallic probe tip to a Si/SiGe double quantum dot
that is integrated with a local charge detector. We first demonstrate that a
dc-biased tip can be used to change the charge occupancy of the double dot. We
then apply microwave excitation through the scanning tip to drive
photon-assisted tunneling transitions in the double dot. We infer the double
dot energy level diagram from the frequency and detuning dependence of the
photon-assisted tunneling resonance condition. These measurements allow us to
resolve 65 eV excited states, an energy scale consistent with
typical valley splittings in Si/SiGe. Future extensions of this approach may
allow spatial mapping of the valley splitting in Si devices, which is of
fundamental importance for spin-based quantum processors
Crises and collective socio-economic phenomena: simple models and challenges
Financial and economic history is strewn with bubbles and crashes, booms and
busts, crises and upheavals of all sorts. Understanding the origin of these
events is arguably one of the most important problems in economic theory. In
this paper, we review recent efforts to include heterogeneities and
interactions in models of decision. We argue that the Random Field Ising model
(RFIM) indeed provides a unifying framework to account for many collective
socio-economic phenomena that lead to sudden ruptures and crises. We discuss
different models that can capture potentially destabilising self-referential
feedback loops, induced either by herding, i.e. reference to peers, or
trending, i.e. reference to the past, and account for some of the phenomenology
missing in the standard models. We discuss some empirically testable
predictions of these models, for example robust signatures of RFIM-like herding
effects, or the logarithmic decay of spatial correlations of voting patterns.
One of the most striking result, inspired by statistical physics methods, is
that Adam Smith's invisible hand can badly fail at solving simple coordination
problems. We also insist on the issue of time-scales, that can be extremely
long in some cases, and prevent socially optimal equilibria to be reached. As a
theoretical challenge, the study of so-called "detailed-balance" violating
decision rules is needed to decide whether conclusions based on current models
(that all assume detailed-balance) are indeed robust and generic.Comment: Review paper accepted for a special issue of J Stat Phys; several

Figuring Rhetoric: From Antistrophe to Apostrophe through Catastrophe
This essay explores rhetoric tropologically through various strophes: antistrophe, catastrophe, and apostrophe. Our purpose is to delineate problems and possibilities that these tropes pose for rhetoric in an effort to create new rhetorics. We seek to display the antistrophic and catastrophic figurations of rhetoric and then use visual lenses of photography and cinema to disrupt the figurations. Following the disruption, we seek to heighten sensibilities to other figurations, in particular an apostrophic figuration. We cast apostrophe as a figure for change because it marks a deeply felt turn toward difference and otherness. Turned as such, rhetoric becomes erotic
