The significance of sample mass in the analysis of steroid estrogens in sewage sludges and the derivation of partition coefficients in wastewaters
Optimization of an analytical method for determination of steroid estrogens, through minimizing sample size, resulted in recoveries >84%, with relative standard deviations <3% and demonstrated the significance of sample size on method performance. Limits of detection were 2.1–5.3 ng/g. Primary sludges had estrogen concentrations of up to one order of magnitude less than those found in biological sludges (up to 994 ng/g). However, partition coefficients were higher in primary sludges (except estriol), with the most hydrophobic compound (ethinylestradiol) exhibiting the highest Kp value, information which may be of value to those involved in modeling removal during wastewater treatment
Highly anisotropic Bose-Einstein condensates: crossover to lower dimensionality
We develop a simple analytical model based on a variational method to explain
the properties of trapped cylindrically symmetric Bose-Einstein condensates
(BEC) of varying degrees of anisotropy well into regimes of effective one
dimension (1D) and effective two dimension (2D). Our results are accurate in
regimes where the Thomas-Fermi approximation breaks down and they are shown to

Space-time Phase Transitions in Driven Kinetically Constrained Lattice Models
Kinetically constrained models (KCMs) have been used to study and understand
the origin of glassy dynamics. Despite having trivial thermodynamic properties,
their dynamics slows down dramatically at low temperatures while displaying
dynamical heterogeneity as seen in glass forming supercooled liquids. This
dynamics has its origin in an ergodic-nonergodic first-order phase transition
between phases of distinct dynamical "activity". This is a "space-time"
transition as it corresponds to a singular change in ensembles of trajectories
of the dynamics rather than ensembles of configurations. Here we extend these
ideas to driven glassy systems by considering KCMs driven into non-equilibrium
steady states through non-conservative forces. By classifying trajectories
through their entropy production we prove that driven KCMs also display an
analogous first-order space-time transition between dynamical phases of finite
and vanishing entropy production. We also discuss how trajectories with rare
values of entropy production can be realized as typical trajectories of a
mapped system with modified forces

Copyright @ 2011 Elsevier B.V.The fate and behaviour of two groups of endocrine disrupting chemicals, steroid estrogens and nonylphenol ethoxylates, have been evaluated during the anaerobic digestion of primary and mixed sewage sludge under mesophilic and thermophilic conditions. Digestion occurred over six retention times, in laboratory scale reactors, treating sludges collected from a sewage treatment works in the United Kingdom. It has been established that sludge concentrations of both groups of compounds demonstrated temporal variations and that concentrations in mixed sludge were influenced by the presence of waste activated sludge as a result of transformations during aerobic treatment. The biodegradation of total steroid estrogens was >50% during primary sludge digestion with lower removals observed for mixed sludge, which reflected bulk organic solids removal efficiencies. The removal of nonylphenol ethoxylates was greater in mixed sludge digestion (>58%) compared with primary sludge digestion and did not reflect bulk organic removal efficiencies. It is apparent that anaerobic digestion reduces the concentrations of these compounds, and would therefore be expected to confer a degree of protection against exposure and transfer of both groups of compounds to the receiving/re-use environment.Thames Water, Yorkshire Water, and EPSRC
Finite-temperature correlations in the one-dimensional trapped and untrapped Bose gases
We calculate the dynamic single-particle and many-particle correlation
functions at non-zero temperature in one-dimensional trapped repulsive Bose
gases. The decay for increasing distance between the points of these
correlation functions is governed by a scaling exponent that has a universal
expression in terms of observed quantities. This expression is valid in the
weak-interaction Gross-Pitaevskii as well as in the strong-interaction
Girardeau-Tonks limit, but the observed quantities involved depend on the
interaction strength. The confining trap introduces a weak center-of-mass
dependence in the scaling exponent. We also conjecture results for the
