    A Machine Learning Approach to Shipment Consolidation

    This research analyzes the current approach used by a client of DHL LLP for the transportation of shipments from suppliers to production sites. As a result of this analysis, several improvements are proposed that can be used to reduce the costs of transportation in the logistics network. Focus is put on shipment consolidation, rather than on the rerouting of shipments. In this paper, two consolidation methods are introduced. Cluster analysis groups together suppliers that are geographically close and generally ship to the same production sites, and a time-based policy that introduces a maximum waiting time for shipments before they are released. While only marginal improvements are obtained when applying these techniques indepen- dently, a combination of the two provides a powerful synergy. A trade-off between the savings and proportion of on-time shipments arises, when a maximum waiting time is introduced. The potential savings, therefore, depends on the company’s tol- erance for late shipments. While the proposed techniques work in theory, practical and organizational challenges emerge when applying them in the real world.

    This report examines the effectiveness and animal welfare aspects of drowning traps for the control of harmful wild rodents, with special attention to the Ekomille or EKO1000 trap. The conclusion is that such systems can be effective in certain situations, but that the welfare impact of the Ekomille is estimated to be severe to extreme. This is because animals in the Ekomille drown consciously. When redesigning, manufacturers could pay attention to direct stunning of animals and/or shortening the time to loss of consciousness and/or death

    More than half of all patients with cancer receive radiation therapy, but resistance is commonly observed. Currently, it is unknown whether resistance to radiation therapy is acquired or inherently present. Here, we employed organoids derived from rectal cancer and single-cell whole-genome sequencing to investigate the long-term evolution of subclones in response to radiation. Comparing single-cell whole-genome karyotypes between in-vitro-unirradiated and -irradiated organoids revealed three patterns of subclonal evolution: (1) subclonal persistence, (2) subclonal extinction, and (3) subclonal expansion. Organoids in which subclonal shifts occurred (i.e., expansion or extinction) became more resistant to radiation. Although radioresistant subclones did not share recurrent copy-number alterations that could explain their radioresistance, resistance was associated with reduced chromosomal instability, an association that was also observed in 529 human cancer cell lines. These data suggest that resistance to radiation is inherently present and associated with reduced chromosomal instability

    From welfare to work: does the neighborhood matter?

    This paper investigates whether individual transition rates from welfare to work are influenced by neighborhood effects. We use a unique administrative database on welfare recipients in Rotterdam, the second largest city of The Netherlands. We find that conditional on personal characteristics there is a negative relationship between the neighborhood unemployment rate and the transition rate from welfare to work of young Dutch welfare recipients. We do not find any neighborhood effects for older Dutch welfare recipients and non-Dutch welfare recipients. When performing some sensitivity analyses this result is robust to different specifications. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved
