    Soliton dynamics in optical fibers using the generalized traveling-wave method

    The generalized traveling wave method (GTWM) is applied to the nonlinear Schr枚dinger (NLS) equation with general perturbations in order to obtain the equations of motion for an ansatz with six collective coordinates, namely the soliton position, the amplitude, the inverse of the soliton width, the velocity, the chirp, and the phase. The advantage of the new ansatz is that it yields three pairs of canonically conjugated coordinates and momenta that all are well-behaved. The new ansatz is applied to model the dynamics of a soliton in a dispersion-shifted optical fiber described by the generalized NLS, including dissipation, higher-order dispersion, Raman scattering, and self-steepening perturbations. It is shown that the GTWM is equivalent to the modified method of moments, which considers the time variation of the norm, the first and the second moment of the norm, the momentum, the first moment of the momentum, and the energy for the perturbed NLS equation.MICINN (Spain) Grant No. FIS2014-54497-PMathematical Institute of the University of Seville (IMUS) - Plan Propio of the University of Sevill

    Fundamentals of training navigators of ships flying foreign flags when entering the inland waterways of the Russian Federation

    Navigation on inland waterways, such as rivers, canals, fairways via reservoirs and lakes is performed under conditions of a minimum under the keel clearance, hydrodynamic interaction between the ship's hull and underwater limits of the fairway, and the impact of irregular currents. Piloting a ship difficult navigational conditions requires the navigator to monitor continuously the ship鈥檚 motion, assess quickly the situation and develop optimal decision for ship handling, have sufficient navigational experience and a large amount of practical knowledge. To achieve a high level of qualification, the training of navigators is carried out in several ways at once - general and particular pilotage, organization of navigation safety and the theoretical foundations of ship handling. Lack of theoretical or practical knowledge can lead to wrong assessment of navigation situation and therefore be considered as factor limiting passage of vessel and navigational safety. The article contains analysis of inland waterways navigation particulars as basis of training for navigators of ships flying foreign flags when entering the inland waterways of the Russian Federation to reduce influence of limiting factors and support the navigational safety
