Rhythmicity of mood symptoms in idividuals at risk for psychiatric disorders
Despite emerging evidence that disruption in circadian rhythms may contribute to the pathophysiology of psychiatric disorders, there is a significant knowledge gap on the rhythmicity of psychological symptoms. Here, we aimed at investigating the rhythmicity of mood symptoms in individuals at risk for psychiatric disorders. 391 Brazilian and 317 Spanish participants completed the Self-Reporting Questionnaire-20 for non-psychotic mental disorders; the Mood Rhythm Instrument was used to assess rhythmicity of mood symptoms and the Munich ChronoType Questionnaire to assess sleep patterns. We found that the rhythmicity of specific mood-related symptoms and behaviors, particularly pessimism and motivation to exercise, were associated with being at risk for psychiatric disorders, even after controlling for sleep timing, sleep deficit, and season of data collection. We also found that the peak of some mood symptoms and behaviors were different between individuals at high vs. low risk for psychiatric disorders, with specific differences between countries. These results are consistent with previous research showing that circadian misalignment is associated with higher risk for mental health conditions. These findings also suggest that lifestyle changes preventing circadian misalignment might be useful to reduce the risk of psychiatric disorders, where cultural differences must be taken into account
Polysaccharide/protein nanomultilayer coatings: construction, characterization and evaluation of their effect on 'Rocha' pear (Pyrus communis L.) shelf-life
Nanolayered coatings of κ-carrageenan, a polysaccharide with good gas barrier properties, and lysozyme, a protein with antimicrobial action, were in a first stage assembled on aminolysed/charged polyethylene terephthalate (PET) pieces, which acted as a support, by alternate five-layer deposition. This was performed to allow the characterization of the nanomultilayer system. PET aminolysis was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and contact angle, and the subsequent layer adsorption on aminolysed PET surface was confirmed by absorbance, contact angle and SEM images. The water vapour permeability and the oxygen permeability (O2P) of the five layers were found to be 0.013 ± 0.003 × 10−11 and 0.1 ± 0.01 × 10−14 g m−1 s−1 Pa−1, respectively. The nanomultilayer system was subsequently applied (without PET support) directly on ‘Rocha’ (Pyrus communis L.) fresh-cut pears and whole pears. Uncoated fresh-cut pears and whole pears presented higher mass loss, higher total soluble solids (TSS) and lower titratable acidity when compared with coated fresh-cut pears and whole pears. Uncoated fresh-cut pears also presented a darker colour. These results showed that the nanolayered coating assembled on the fruits’ surface has a positive effect on fruit quality and contributed to extend the shelf-life.Author Bartolomeu G. de S. Flowability of inert particle beds with fruit pulp: effects on the drying in spouted bed
In this work six types of inert particles were characterized and analyzed for drying tropical fruit pulps. The repose angle was determined with and without the addition of water and pulp of various tropical fruits. The bed flowability was related to the particle properties and chemical composition of pulps. The influence of the repose angle on the drying performance was analyzed. It was also verified that the composition of pulps influenced the bed flowability. The global analysis showed that the pulps with high lipids and insoluble solids content and low reducing sugar content improved the bed flowability. The results obtained with the drying of the fruit pulps using low-density polystyrene granules as inert particles showed that high flowabilities lead to lower minimum spout flow rates, but do not necessarily lead to the highest powder production.
Modern swine production faces many challenges nowadays, among which are productivity growth, meat quality improvement, decrease of environmental damage and reduction of cost production. Pigs spend energy to vocalizing, especially when they undergo stress. The waste of energy can increase the cost of production and lead to greater environmental damage. The goal of this study was to estimate the energy spent by pigs under the stress of castration and its effect on the animals' weight gain. Two groups of ten animals each were castrated, being one group with local anesthetic and the other without anesthetic. The piglets' vocalizations were recorded during different stages of the neutering process and then estimated of the amount of energy emitted during each vocalization. Afterwards, this energy was associated with the animals' weight gain. There was no difference in the total energy spent in both groups, since the energy used during the application of anesthetic was similar to the energy spent during the castration of the animals without anesthetic. There was also no correlation between energy spent and the animals' weight gain. It was possible to estimate the amount of energy emitted through vocalization. This energy spent by piglets in pain was greater than in other handling situations (contention, weighting and realease).A suinocultura moderna enfrenta muitos desafios, dentre os quais o crescimento da produtividade, a melhoria da qualidade de carne, a redução de danos ambientais e a redução de custo de produção.
ESTRUTURA POPULACIONAL E CONDIÇÃO FISIOLÓGICA DE Hoplias malabaricus (BLOCH, 1794) NO BAIXO RIO CAPIBARIBE
This research aimed to determine population structure and physiological condition of Hoplias malabaricus in the Capibaribe river (PE), northeastern Brazil. Monthly sampling were carried out between September/2013 and August/2014, using gill nets. The sex was identified by macroscopic and microscopic viewing of gonads, following the classification proposed by Vazzoler (1996). The specimens were distributed in length classes, being applied Kolmogorov-Smirnov test to evaluate the presence of sexual dimorphism. The length-weight relationship was calculated assessing differences through Kruskal Wallis test and physiological condition was calculated through allometric condition factor (K) between sexes, being applied the Spearman correlation test. Was collected 30 males and 42 females. No sexual dimorphism was observed relative to the size. Was observed positive allometric growth for females and negative for males. Was evidenced physiological condition variations along the year regarding seasonality. Population structure and physiological condition of the Hoplias malabaricus differed from that found in other environments, being this research, an important tool support the development of future management plans and conservation of Hoplias malabaricus, especially in this region. Keywords: population dynamics; fishing; reproduction.
Spanish translation of the mood rhythm instrument : novel approach to mood evaluation
Introduction: The Mood Rhythm Instrument (MRI) is a questionnaire developed to assess the circadian rhythm of mood-related behaviors. The aim of this study was to translate this instrument from Brazilian Portuguese into Spanish. Methods: The translation process consisted of forward translation, adjustment, back translation, back translation review and harmonization. Results: Comparing the initial Spanish translation and the final Spanish version, there were no semantic differences and the items were not changed. Conclusions: The Spanish version of the MRI is ready to be tested in a Spanish population. In the future, assessing and comparing mood-related behaviors in transcultural studies will be possible
