The importance of timely ophthalmologic examination in preterm infants at risk of retinopathy occurrence
Background/Aim. Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a multifactorial disease in premature infants. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of ROP in children treated at the Center of Neonatology, Pediatric Clinic, Clinical Center in Kragujevac, Serbia. Methods. The study covered all children with birth weight below 2,000 g and/or gestational age below the 37th week, who from June 2006 to December 2009 underwent ophthalmological examination for ROP. The results of fundoscopy were classified in accordance with the International Classification of ROP. The treatment of infants and those with ROP was conducted in accordance with the early treatment of ROP study recommendations. We analyzed gestational age, birth weight and postconceptional age in two groups: healthy infants and those with severe form of ROP. Statistical analysis was performed using the SPSS 16. Results. A total of 478 children met the criteria of screening for ROP. Severe stage of ROP, which required laser treatment, had 102 (21.3%) children. Out of the infants with severe ROP 14 (13.7%) of the infants with APD had aggressive posterior disease, while two (0.4%) remained blind. The differences in the mean values of gestational age between the healthy and the children with severe form of the disease were statistically significant (p < 0.0005). The mean value of gestational age for the healthy children was 33.33 ± 2.28 weeks and for the seek infants 30.66 ± 2.79 weeks. The mean value of the weight in healthy children was 1.981 ± 407 g, and in sick children 1.535 ± 434 g which was statistically significant (p < 0.0005). Multivariate binary logistic regression showed that the occurrence of the disease depends on body weight and gestational age. Conclusion. The incidence of severe forms of ROP was 21.3%. Aggressive form of ROP was present in 13.7% of the children. The cut-off value for body weight was 1.740 g, and for gestationl age 32.5 weeks
The determinants of Serbian banking industry profitability
This article investigates the impact of bank-specific, market-specific
and macroeconomic factors on the profitability of the banking sector
in Serbia in the period 2004–2011. We use three panel datasets: for all banks in a sample and for domestic and foreign banks. The Hausman test was performed in order to test whether a fixed or a random effects model should be used in the regression analysis. The results are compared to the findings of previous research which was focused on EU countries. Moreover, the crisis effect on the profitability of banks in Serbia has been considered. The results show that bank-specific and market-specific factors have influence on bank profitability, but macroeconomic factors do not. We find that influence of liquidity ratio and a measure of financial development on profitability of banks are in contrast in Serbia compared to EU countries. The results also show that different factors influence profitability of domestic and foreign banks and that crisis has an opposite effect on profitability of domestic and foreign banks
The role of biochemical markers as early indicators of cardiac damage and prognostic parameters of perinatal asphyxia
Background/Aim. In recent years, the focus of interest of the scientific community is the application of heart markers as early indicators and prognostic parameters of perinatal asphyxia (PA). The aim of this study was to evaluate the significance of clinical application of heart markers in term newborns with perinatal asphyxia. Methods. During a 3- year period we analyzed 91 full-term newborns (55 with and 36 without perinatal asphyxia). In all the subjects within the first 24-48 h after birth, we simultaneously determined serum concentrations of cardiac troponin I, brain natriuretic peptide, MB fraction of creatine kinase (CK-MB) and Creactive protein. Results. In the group of full-term neonates with PA significantly higher levels of cardiac troponinI (p = 0.000), CK-MB fraction (p = 0.000), brain natriuretic peptide (p = 0.003) and C-reactive protein (p = 0.017) were found, compared to the group of healthy full-term newborns. In merged group (n = 91) cardiac troponin I level correlated with the fifth minute Apgar score (r = - 0.637, p = 0.000) and the serum lactate concentration in the first 12h after birth (r = 0.529, p = 0.000). Early increase in cardiac troponin I > 0.135 μg/L predicted the risk of death with the sensitivity of 84.6% and specificity of 85.9%, while the increase in CK-MB fraction, brain natriuretic peptide and C-reactive protein did not have a predictive value with respect to a mortality outcome. Conclusion. Among the tested cardiac markers, cardiac troponin I is the most sensitive and the only reliable early predictor of mortality in fullterm neonates with perinatal asphyxia
Genome-wide association study identifies _FUT8_ and _ESR2_ as co-regulators of a bi-antennary N-linked glycan A2 (GlcNAc~2~Man~3~GlcNAc~2~) in human plasma proteins
HPLC analysis of N-glycans quantified levels of the biantennary glycan (A2) in plasma proteins of 924 individuals. Subsequent genome-wide association study (GWAS) using 317,503 single nucleotide polymorphysms (SNP) identified two genetic loci influencing variation in A2: FUT 8 and ESR2. We demonstrate that human glycans are amenable to GWAS and their genetic regulation shows sex-specific effects with _FUT 8_ variants explaining 17.3% of the variance in pre-menopausal women, while _ESR2_ variants explained 6.0% of the variance in post-menopausal women

Primjena umjetnih neuronskih mreža za rješavanje složenih građevinskih problema je od ogromne važnosti za proces projektiranja. One se mogu uspješno koristiti za prognostičko modeliranje u različitim inženjerskim područjima, osobito u onim slučajevima u kojima već postoje neka prethodna istraživanja (numerička ili pokusna). Ovaj rad prikazuje neke od pozitivnih aspekata modela neuronske mreže kad se koriste za utvrđivanje požarne otpornosti građevinskih elemenata.The application of artificial neural networks for solving complex civil engineering problems is of huge importance for the construction design process. They can be successfully used for prognostic modelling in different engineering fields, especially in those cases where some prior (numerical or experimental) analyses were already made. This paper presents some of the positive aspects of neural network’s model that was used for determination of fire resistance of construction elements

Profiles of Parental Burnout Around the Globe: Similarities and Differences Across 36 Countries
Parental burnout (PB) is a pervasive phenomenon. Parenting is embedded in cultural values, and previous research has shown the role of individualism in PB. In this paper, we reanalyze previously collected data to identify profiles based on the four dimensions of PB, and explore whether these profiles vary across countries’ levels of collectivistic-individualistic (COL-IND) values. Our sample comprised 16,885 individuals from 36 countries (73% women; 27% men), and we used a latent profile approach to uncover PB profiles. The findings showed five profiles: Fulfilled, Not in PB, Low risk of PB, High risk of PB and Burned out. The profiles pointed to climbing levels of PB in the total sample and in each of the three country groups (High COL/Low IND, Medium COL-IND, Low COL/High IND). Exploratory analyses revealed that distinct dimensions of PB had the most prominent roles in the climbing pattern, depending on the countries’ levels of COL/IND. In particular, we found contrast to be a hallmark dimension and an indicator of severe burnout for individualistic countries. Contrary to our predictions, emotional distance and saturation did not allow a clear differentiation across collectivistic countries. Our findings support several research avenues regarding PB measurement and intervention
Animal models for COVID-19
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the aetiological
agent of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), an emerging respiratory infection
caused by the introduction of a novel coronavirus into humans late in 2019 (frst
detected in Hubei province, China). As of 18 September 2020, SARS-CoV-2 has spread
to 215 countries, has infected more than 30 million people and has caused more than
950,000 deaths. As humans do not have pre-existing immunity to SARS-CoV-2, there
is an urgent need to develop therapeutic agents and vaccines to mitigate the current
pandemic and to prevent the re-emergence of COVID-19. In February 2020, the World
Health Organization (WHO) assembled an international panel to develop animal
models for COVID-19 to accelerate the testing of vaccines and therapeutic agents.

Meeting of the Ecosystem Approach Correspondence Group on on Pollution Monitoring (CorMon Pollution)
In accordance with the UNEP/MAP Programme of Work adopted by COP 21 for the biennium 2020-2021, the United Nations Environment Programme/Mediterranean Action Plan-Barcelona Convention Secretariat (UNEP/MAP) and its Programme for the Assessment and Control of Marine Pollution in the Mediterranean (MED POL) organized the Meeting of the Ecosystem Approach Correspondence Group on Pollution Monitoring (CorMon on Pollution Monitoring). The Meeting was held via videoconference on 26-27 April 2021.
2. The main objectives of the Meeting were to:
a) Review the Monitoring Guidelines/Protocols for IMAP Common Indicator 18, as well as the Monitoring Guidelines/Protocols for Analytical Quality Assurance and Reporting of Monitoring Data for IMAP Common Indicators 13, 14, 17, 18 and 20;
b) Take stock of the state of play of inter-laboratory testing and good laboratory practice related to IMAP Ecological Objectives 5 and 9;
c) Analyze the proposal for the integration and aggregation rules for IMAP Ecological Objectives 5, 9 and 10 and assessment criteria for contaminants and nutrients;
d) Recommend the ways and means to strengthen implementation of IMAP Pollution Cluster towards preparation of the 2023 MED Quality Status Report
