Presidential Language in the Pressroom: A Corpus-Assisted Analysis of Trump's Spontaneous Discourse
Donald Trump has been the most controversial figure in the recent US political scene. Besides being well-known for his political views and his conduct as President, he has also grabbed people’s attention with his original use of language, which is unlike that of many politicians and former Presidents. But what makes it different? What role is language playing in his unexpected political success? Starting from such questions, and with the fundamental help of two collections of transcripts (corpora), this study analyses a representative sample of Trump’s press conferences to shed light on his spontaneous discourse, that is, the language he employs when he speaks off the cuff, without following any script
“We can kill striking workers without being prosecuted”: armed bands of strikebreakers in late Imperial Germany
This chapter focuses on the violence perpetrated by armed bands of professional strikebreakers in Wilhelmine Germany. It examines the context in which violent strikebreaking tactics emerged and became part of the social reality and the media reconstruction of it. What makes the activities of armed strikebreakers remarkable is that violent confrontations during labour disputes were some of the most frequently discussed and polarising topics in German newspapers during the decade before the First World War. The Social Democratic press complained on an almost daily basis about legal discrimination against unionised workers and the intensification of violence and intimidation perpetrated by armed strikebreakers, which went largely unpunished. The de facto impunity of armed groups of strikebreakers can be explained as an extra-legal response aimed at protecting the so-called loyal classes after leading conservatives and employers’ associations recognised that the intensification of repressive authoritarian practices against the labour movement could not be legally imposed. The rise of armed strikebreaking was economically motivated by the steady growth in demand for replacement workers and for the protection of non-strikers, but it was also politically motivated in that it was a counterstrategy against “social-democratic terrorism”
Joining Forces against ‘Strike Terrorism’: The Public-Private Interplay in Policing Strikes in Imperial Germany, 1890–1914
This article examines the blurred boundaries between public and private repressive practices in Wilhelmine Germany with a special focus on the legal and administrative framework drawn up to redistribute security tasks and delegate the use of violence to non-state actors. While the rapid escalation of political violence in Central and Eastern Europe after 1917 has been widely discussed in the recent historiography, the structure of violence in the pre-war period remains less explored, especially with regard to the public-private interplay in the policing of popular protests. After the first massive strike by Ruhr miners in 1889, the Prussian authorities began to support the formation of semi-private armed protection groups in an effort to tackle ‘strike terrorism’. The idea of privatizing repressive practices arose as a result of widespread fears of social and political disintegration. Yet, although it may seem paradoxical, the precondition for delegating the use of violence to non-state actors was Prussian administrators’ confidence in the state’s solidity and efficiency. The ambivalence in contemporary discourses concerning the vulnerability of the existing social and political order is crucial to explaining why the Prussian authorities implemented strategies for legally distributing arms to those groups that were considered part of the ‘loyal classes’. The mobilization against ‘strike terrorism’ involved not only officially organized armed groups, such as the Zechenwehren, but also more informal or extra-legal strategies such as private use of the municipal police, the distribution of arms to strike-breakers and the militarization of white-collar workers and supervisors.European Research Council (ERC

The gender dimension of outsiderness in Western Europe: a comparative cross-model analysis
Purpose – The article investigates whether and to what extent outsiderness is gendered in Western Europe, both in terms of its spread and degree. It thus explores which male and female post-Fordist social classes are more exposed to the risk of this phenomenon. It also scrutinizes whether such a gendered characterization has varied over time and across clusters of Western European countries.
Design/methodology/approach – Relying on a comparative analysis of the data provided by the European Social Survey (ESS) dataset and comparing two points in time – the early/mid-2000s and the late 2010s – the work provides both a dichotomous and continuous variable of outsiderness, which measure its spread and degree in the female and male workforces of a pooled set of growth models.
Findings – The empirical analysis shows that outsiderness is profoundly gendered in Western Europe and thus a feminized social phenomenon. However, the comparative investigation highlights that outsiderness has been genderized in diverse ways across the four growth models. Different patterns of gendered outsiderness can be identified.
Originality/value – The article provides a comparative and diachronic analysis of outsiderness from a gender lens, putting into a mutual dialogue different literature on labour market, and shows that outsiderness represents a key analytical dimension for assessing gender inequalities

ABSTRACT
There has been resurgence in interest in infestations from the common bed bugs (Cimex lectularius), as they
have become more prevalent in well-developed countries. This paper reports the case of a 50-year-old woman
whose bedroom was infested by bed bugs. The woman presented in our laboratory with insect specimens that
she had caught in her bedroom. She reported bites on shoulders, back, belly, and thighs associated with sleep
disturbance. Based on an examination of the morphological characteristics, the insects were identified as Cimex
lectularius. As the apartment had been rented for several years before the woman moved in, it was suspected
that the bed bugs had been introduced by some of the tenants, including some from overseas, who may have
inadvertently brought the bugs with them in their luggage/belongings and who had previously lived in the
apartment. After two unsuccessful insecticide applications, a thorough weekly decontamination using a steam
cleaner completely resolved the infestation within about two months. Knowledge of the epidemiology, life cycle,
clinical signs, medical treatment and environmental management of bed bugs by physicians, dermatologists,
and entomologists may contribute to the better dissemination of information needed for effective prevention
and control as well as to a more accurate diagnosis of the bite marks caused by these insects
Italy and Spain at a crossroads: the politics of active social policies in southern Europe under a gender perspective
Purpose – The article explores to what extent party politics has influenced the different trajectories in Spain and Italy in terms of gendered active social policies (ASPs) (i.e. ALMPs and WLBPs). Second, it investigates how social and political modernization in the two countries has facilitated or hindered party competition on gendered ASPs.
Design/methodology/approach – To investigate to what extent parties support gendered ASPs, the article relies on an original content analysis of party manifestos issued during the 2010s national elections. A total of 1387 quasi-sentences have been coded. The results were then quantified to graphically show how positions differentiate across parties and countries.
Findings – The content analysis of party manifestos displays that party politics matters: gendered ASPs are backed in a very different way by the Spanish and Italian parties. While in Spain all political parties have strongly championed ALMPs and WLBPs, this is not the case for the Italian parties. The research has also stressed that the specific path of social and political modernization is an important intervening variable that alters positively or negatively parties’ support for gendered ASPs.
Originality/value – The article contributes to widen theoretically and empirically the literature on ASPs in the Southern European countries. Theoretically, it questions the supposed homogeneity of the Southern social model and investigated the alleged bifurcation between Italy and Spain, focusing on those policies – ASPs – that constitute the foundations of the Southern model: familialism and dualization. Furthermore, this bifurcation was analyzed adopting a gender perspective, and exploring adherence to or departure from the Southern model. Third, the article focuses on the politics of ASPs demonstrating that inspecting the political arena can contribute to explain policy change
El imaginario religioso en el discurso periodístico del 11-S
The first chronicles and journalistic commentaries about September 11th include religious references in a process of sacred rites of the day-to-day things that contains elements of the religious experience: rites, sacred spaces or sacred objects. The means will add, therefore, the mythical or legendary stories. The contexts of these terms are the emotional spiritual experience, the struggle against the heretics or the secular faith in the democratic principles.
