Here the investigation turns to Kärnten, a region that is more rural and has a weaker economic structure than other Austrian regions. After decades of being a border region in the European internal market, the eastwards extension of the EU is now bringing the Kärnten location both new development chances and also increased competitive pressure due to East European competition. In recent years the state has been pursuing economic policy measures to introduce technology-oriented structural transformation, a course that shows that even in an economic area characterised by catch-up development it is possible to react successfully to new challenges in locational competition. This is particularly true of the two cities of Klagenfurt and Villach, regional conglomerations that drive development for the entire federal state

The social dimension of globalization: A review of the literature

    Get PDF
With globalization affecting so many inter-connected areas, it is difficult to grasp its full impact. This literature review of over 120 sources considers the impact of globalization on wages and taxes, poverty, inequality, insecurity, child labour, gender, and migration. Opening with some stylized facts concerning globalization in 1985-2002, the authors then highlight recent findings on these areas, reporting on controversies and on emerging consensus where it exists. There follows a review of national and international policy responses designed to make globalization more sustainable and equitable and to deliver decent jobs, security and a voice in decision-making

    Analysis of Holography Methods

    No full text
Holography is act of capturing light field information using complex interference patterns of coherent light sources. This study explored production techniques of both analog and digital holography and the the applications of each. Holography plays an important role in industry with applications that extend from credit card security and multimedia to early cell death detection using digital holographic microscopy. With analog transmission holography, this study led to a better understanding of the differences in application of off-axis and on-axis analog construction, as well as a better understanding of the limitations of light field capture in holographic plates. Using computer programming and a CCD sensor, the experiments explored the process and functionality of creating digital holograms. The main goal was the creation of an amateur digital holography setup enabling the creation of 3-dimensional images of objects for study and comparison

    Incremental Reasoning for Multiple Inheritance

    No full text
Object-orientation supports code reuse and incremental programming. Multiple inheritance increases the power of code reuse, but complicates the binding of method calls and thereby program analysis. Behavioral subtyping allows program analysis under an open world assumption; i.e., under the assumption that class hierarchies are extensible. However, method redefinition is severely restricted by behavioral subtyping, and multiple inheritance often leads to conflicting restrictions from independently designed superclasses. This report presents an approach to incremental reasoning for multiple inheritance under an open world assumption. The approach, based on a notion of lazy behavioral subtyping, is less restrictive than behavioral subtyping and fits well with multiple inheritance, as it incrementally imposes context-dependent behavioral constraints on new subclasses. We formalize the approach as a calculus, for which we show soundness
