Scale effects, time-varying markups and cyclical behavior of primal and dual productivity

This paper presents estimates of the degree of returns to scale using nonparametric measures of primal and dual productivity for 2-digit US manufacturing industries. As part of the analysis, the cyclical behaviour of primal and dual productivity measures are considered, time-varying markups are allowed for, and the small sample properties of the instrumental variables estimator used to derive the estimates from the primal and dual relations examined. Both the primal and dual estimates indicate the existence of increasing returns to scale for the durable goods industries. The simulation results indicate there is a slight tendency for the dual equation estimates to overestimate the degree of returns to scale. However, small sample bias appears to be most severe for the non-durable goods industries

Effective-Mass Klein-Gordon-Yukawa Problem for Bound and Scattering States

    Get PDF
Bound and scattering state solutions of the effective-mass Klein-Gordon equation are obtained for the Yukawa potential with any angular momentum \ell. Energy eigenvalues, normalized wave functions and scattering phase shifts are calculated as well as for the constant mass case. Bound state solutions of the Coulomb potential are also studied as a limiting case. Analytical and numerical results are compared with the ones obtained before.Comment: 13 pages, 1 figur

Price preduction in IMKB using neural networks

    Get PDF
Ankara : The Faculty of Management and the Graduate School of Business Administration, 1994.Thesis (Master's)-- İhsan Doğramacı Bilkent University, 1994.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 92-94).The purpose of this thesis is to perform price prediction in Istanbul Stock Exchange (IMKB) using neural networks approach. The neural networks have been in use in the literature of plenty of time, however, this thesis is one of the first applications of neural network forecasting in the Turkish Financial Framework. The study focuses on four stocks, each of which exhibited different trends for the period january I 99 1 - June 1993. Comparative analysis were carried out for each prediction and detailed statistical inquiry was performed. Even though the full potential of neural networks could not be utilized (basically because of data limitations), the results prove that neural networks perform significantly successful predictions.Altuğ, SinanM.S

Guaranteeing Input Tracking For Constrained Systems: Theory and Application to Demand Response

A method for certifying exact input trackability for constrained discrete time linear systems is introduced in this paper. A signal is assumed to be drawn from a reference set and the system must track this signal with a linear combination of its inputs. Using methods inspired from robust model predictive control, the proposed approach certifies the ability of a system to track any reference drawn from a polytopic set on a finite time horizon by solving a linear program. Optimization over a parameterization of the set of reference signals is discussed, and particular instances of parameterization of this set that result in a convex program are identified, allowing one to find the largest set of trackable signals of some class. Infinite horizon feasibility of the methods proposed is obtained through use of invariant sets, and an implicit description of such an invariant set is proposed. These results are tailored for the application of power consumption tracking for loads, where the operator of the load needs to certify in advance his ability to fulfill some requirement set by the network operator. An example of a building heating system illustrates the results.Comment: Technical Not

Quantum Mechanical Treatment of the Problem of Constraints in Nonextensive Formalism Revisited

    Get PDF
The purity of Werner state in nonextensive formalism associated with two different constraints has been calculated in a previous paper by G. B. Bagci et al. [G. B. Bagci et al., Int. J. Mod. Phys. 20, 2085 (2006)]. Two different results have been obtained corresponding to ordinary probability and escort probability whereas the former has been shown to result in negative values thereby leading authors to deduce the advantage of escort probabilities over ordinary probabilities. However, this results have been only for a limited interval of q values which lie between 0 and 1. In this paper, we solve the same problem for all values of nonextensive index q by using a perturbative approach and show that the simultaneous use of both types of constraint is necessary in order to obtain the solution for whole spectrum of nonextensive index. In this sense, the existence of these different constraints in nonextensive formalism must not be seen as a deficiency in the formalism but rather must be welcomed as a means of providing solution for all values of parameter q.Comment: 7 page
