Integral Field Spectroscopy based H\alpha\ sizes of local Luminous and Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies. A Direct Comparison with high-z Massive Star Forming Galaxies
Aims. We study the analogy between local U/LIRGs and high-z massive SFGs by
comparing basic H{\alpha} structural characteristics, such as size, and
luminosity (and SFR) surface density, in an homogeneous way (i.e. same tracer
and size definition, similar physical scales). Methods. We use Integral Field
Spectroscopy based H{\alpha} emission maps for a representative sample of 54
local U/LIRGs (66 galaxies). From this initial sample we select 26 objects with
H{\alpha} luminosities (L(H{\alpha})) similar to those of massive (i.e. M\ast
\sim 10^10 M\odot or larger) SFGs at z \sim 2, and observed on similar physical
scales. Results. The sizes of the H{\alpha} emitting region in the sample of
local U/LIRGs span a large range, with r1/2(H{\alpha}) from 0.2 to 7 kpc.
However, about 2/3 of local U/LIRGs with Lir > 10^11.4 L\odot have compact
H{\alpha} emission (i.e. r1/2 < 2 kpc). The comparison sample of local U/LIRGs
also shows a higher fraction (59%) of objects with compact H{\alpha} emission
than the high-z sample (25%). This gives further support to the idea that for
this luminosity range the size of the star forming region is a distinctive
factor between local and distant galaxies of similar SF rates. However, when
using H{\alpha} as a tracer for both local and high-z samples, the differences
are smaller than the ones recently reported using a variety of other tracers.
Despite of the higher fraction of galaxies with compact H{\alpha} emission, a
sizable group (\sim 1/3) of local U/LIRGs are large (i.e. r1/2 > 2 kpc). These
are systems showing pre-coalescence merger activity and they are
indistinguishable from the massive high-z SFGs galaxies in terms of their
H{\alpha} sizes, and luminosity and SFR surface densities.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. (!5 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables
Elemental abundance studies of CP stars. The helium-weak stars HD 19400, HD 34797 and HD 35456
An analysis of the abundances of the helium-weak CP stars HD 19400, HD 34797 and HD 35456, is presented using ATLAS9 model atmospheres and observational material taken with a REOSC echelle spectrograph attached to the Jorge Sahade 2.15 m telescope at CASLEO. The light elements are deficient except silicon which is overabundant in HD 19400 and HD 34797. The iron peak elements are all overabundant by factors between 5 and 60. The heavy elements show an overabundance in the three stars studied
Wireless Sensor Networks and Real-Time Locating Systems to Fight against Maritime Piracy
There is a wide range of military and civil applications where Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) and Multi-Agent Systems (MASs) can be used for providing context-awareness for troops and special corps. On the one hand, WSNs comprise an ideal technology to develop Real-Time Locating Systems (RTLSs) aimed at indoor environments, where existing global navigation satellite systems do not work properly. On the other hand, agent-based architectures allow building autonomous and robust systems that are capable of working on highly dynamic scenarios. This paper presents two piracy scenarios where the n-Core platform can be applied. n-Core is a hardware and software platform intended for developing and deploying easily and quickly a wide variety of WSNs applications based on the ZigBee standard. In the first scenario a RTLS is deployed to support boarding and rescue operations. In the second scenario a multi-agent system is proposed to detect the unloading of illegal traffic of merchandise at ports
The unique regulation of iron-sulfur cluster biogenesis in a Gram-positive bacterium
Iron-sulfur clusters function as cofactors of a wide range of proteins, with diverse molecular roles in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Dedicated machineries assemble the clusters and deliver them to the final acceptor molecules in a tightly regulated process. In the prototypical Gram-negative bacterium Escherichia coli, the two existing iron-sulfur cluster assembly systems, iron-sulfur cluster (ISC) and sulfur assimilation (SUF) pathways, are closely interconnected. The ISC pathway regulator, IscR, is a transcription factor of the helix-turn-helix type that can coordinate a [2Fe-2S] cluster. Redox conditions and iron or sulfur availability modulate the ligation status of the labile IscR cluster, which in turn determines a switch in DNA sequence specificity of the regulator: cluster-containing IscR can bind to a family of gene promoters (type-1) whereas the clusterless form recognizes only a second group of sequences (type-2). However, iron-sulfur cluster biogenesis in Gram-positive bacteria is not so well characterized, and most organisms of this group display only one of the iron-sulfur cluster assembly systems. A notable exception is the unique Gram-positive dissimilatory metal reducing bacterium Thermincola potens, where genes from both systems could be identified, albeit with a diverging organization from that of Gram-negative bacteria. We demonstrated that one of these genes encodes a functional IscR homolog and is likely involved in the regulation of iron-sulfur cluster biogenesis in T. potens. Structural and biochemical characterization of T. potens and E. coli IscR revealed a strikingly similar architecture and unveiled an unforeseen conservation of the unique mechanism of sequence discrimination characteristic of this distinctive group of transcription regulators. We thank Jorge Vieira for help with Automatic Detection of Positively Selected Sites. Advantages of using RTLS and WSN to enable efficient power consumption
The use of Real Time Locating Systems is gradually spreading in different areas of society. Multiple sectors, such as industry, security or healthcare are already taking advantage of the benefits of knowing the exact position of people, animals or objects. Energy consumption can also be improved by the use of RTLS and thanks to these systems we can model the habits of users both at home and in public buildings. This information will create consumption maps based on the use of different electronic devices or the use of different spaces. Thus, the election of the best energy tariff or when the best moment is to use appliances will be an easier process
First detection of the 448 GHz H2O transition in space
We present the first detection of the ortho-H2O 4_23-3_30 transition at 448
GHz in space. We observed this transition in the local (z = 0.010) luminous
infrared (IR) galaxy ESO 320-G030 (IRAS F11506-3851) using the Atacama Large
Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The water 4_23-3_30 emission, which
originates in the highly obscured nucleus of this galaxy, is spatially resolved
over a region of ~65 pc in diameter and shows a regular rotation pattern
compatible with the global molecular and ionized gas kinematics. The line
profile is symmetric and well fitted by a Gaussian with an integrated flux of
37.0 +- 0.7 Jy km s-1 . Models predict this water transition as a potential
collisionally excited maser transition. On the contrary, in this galaxy, we
find that the 4_23-3_30 emission is primarily excited by the intense far-IR
radiation field present in its nucleus. According to our modeling, this
transition is a probe of deeply buried galaxy nuclei thanks to the high dust
optical depths (tau_100{\mu}m > 1, N_H > 1e24 cm-2) required to efficiently
excite it.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A Letters; 4 pages, 5 figure
Chemical abundances in bright giants of the globular cluster M62 (NGC 6266)
With the exception of Terzan 5, all the Galactic globular clusters that
possess significant metallicity spreads, such as omega Cen and M22, are
preferentially the more luminous clusters with extended horizontal branches.
Here we present radial velocities and chemical abundances for seven bright
giants in the globular cluster M62, a previously little-studied cluster. With
M_V = -9.18, M62 is the ninth most luminous Galactic globular cluster and has
an extended horizontal branch. Within our sample, we find (i) no evidence for a
dispersion in metallicity, [Fe/H], beyond the measurement uncertainties, (ii)
star-to-star abundance variations for C, O, Na and Al with the usual
correlations between these elements as seen in other globular clusters, and
(iii) a global enrichment for the elements Zr, Ba and La at the level [X/Fe] =
+0.4 dex. For elements heavier than La, the abundance ratios are consistent
with the scaled-solar -process distribution. Below La, the abundances are
anomalous when compared to the scaled-solar s-process or r-process
distributions. For these elements, the abundance signature in M62 is in
agreement with predictions of the s-process from fast-rotating massive stars,
although the high [Rb/Y] ratio we measure may be a challenge to this scenario.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA
