The Influence of Emotion Regulation, Maladaptive Coping, and Criminal Thinking on Maladaptive Behavior

    No full text
Emotion regulation is a cognitive process that occurs due to emotional stimuli in the environment that promotes cognitive or behavioral action to soothe negative emotions. Emotion regulation can affect decision making that promotes maladaptive behavior, similar to criminal thinking. Criminal thinking patterns can be categorized as a form of maladaptive cognitive coping that promotes maladaptive behavior. The association between emotion regulation, criminal thinking, and maladaptive behavior is further explored. A total of (N = 227) MTurk workers participated in a cross-sectional study. Maladaptive emotion regulation and coping predicted willingness to engage in maladaptive behavior. Deficits in emotion regulation were further associated with aggressive behavior, specifically lack of impulse control, emotion suppression, and lack of emotional clarity. Additionally, maladaptive emotion regulation and deficits in emotion regulation were associated with different criminal thinking patterns. The current research supports the hypothesis that emotion regulation influences decision making that promotes maladaptive behavior, and maladaptive cognitive thinking patterns. Interventions should target deficits in emotion regulation to reduce maladaptive behavior

Self-Stigma of Mental Illness Among Latino People on the U.S.-México Border

People with serious mental illness often internalize society’s negative attitudes toward mental illness via self-stigma. Although stigma is a culturally defined construct, little is known about how stigma manifests among cultural subgroups in the United States. Negative consequences of self-stigma, such as reluctance to seek mental health treatment, may be particularly deleterious for members of certain ethnic groups, such as Latino people, who are already disproportionately at risk for not receiving mental health treatment. The goal of the present study was to examine how facets of culture explain variance in self-stigma among Latino people, and whether culture explained variance in self-stigma beyond sociocultural and mental health variables identified by prior research. We conducted a cross-sectional survey with a sample of 343 Mexican and Mexican American people who self-identified as having a mental health concern living in the U.S.-México border region. The survey assessed self-stigma, culture, mental health, and sociodemographics. We found that multiple facets of culture, namely collectivism, power distance, and long-term orientation, were significant predictors of variance in self-stigma even after controlling for mental health and sociodemographic factors. Although some factors identified by prior research can be used to understand self-stigma among Latino people, facets of culture appear important to consider. Cultural factors should be incorporated into antistigma interventions targeting the Latino community

Radiosynovectomy is a technique used to decrease inflammation of the synovial tissue by intraarticular injection of a β-emitting radionuclide, such as 177Lu, which is suitable for radiotherapy due to its decay characteristics. Drug-encapsulating nanoparticles based on poly lactic‑co‑glycolic acid (PLGA) polymer are a suitable option to treat several arthritic diseases, used as anti-inflammatory drugs transporters of such as methotrexate (MTX), which has been widely used in the arthritis treatment (RA), and hyaluronic acid (HA), which specifically binds the CD44 and hyaluronan receptors overexpressed on the inflamed synovial tissue cells. The 1,4,7,10‑Tetraazacyclododecane‑1,4,7,10‑tetraacetic acid (DOTA) was used as complexing agent of Lutetium- 177 for radiotherapy porpoises. The aim of this research was to synthesize 177Lu-DOTA-HA-PLGA(MTX) as a novel, smart drug delivery system with target-specific recognition, potentially useful in radiosynovectomy for local treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. The polymeric nanoparticle system was prepared and chemically characterized. The MTX encapsulation and radiolabelling were performed with suitable characteristics for its in vitro evaluation. The HA-PLGA(MTX) nanoparticle mean diameter was 167.6 nm ± 57.4 with a monomodal and narrow distribution. Spectroscopic techniques demonstrated the effective conjugation of HA and chelating agent DOTA to the polymeric nanosystem. The MTX encapsulation was 95.2% and the loading efficiency was 6%. The radiochemical purity was 96 ± 2%, determined by ITLC. Conclusion: 177Lu-DOTA-HA-PLGA(MTX) was prepared as a biocompatible polymeric PLGA nanoparticle conjugated to HA for specific targeting. The therapeutic nanosystem is based on bi-modal mechanisms using MTX as a disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD) and 177Lu as a radiotherapeutic component. The 177Lu-DOTA-HA-PLGA(MTX) nanoparticles showed properties suitable for radiosynovectomy and further specific targeted anti-rheumatic therapy.Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México: No. 4288/2017/CI International Atomic Energy Agency: (CRPeF22064, Contract No. 18358 CONACYT: SEP-CONACYT A1-S-3808
