Stroke-related Effects on Maximal Dynamic Hip Flexor Fatigability and Functional Implications
Introduction: Stroke-related changes in maximal dynamic hip flexor muscle fatigability may be more relevant functionally than isometric hip flexor fatigability. Methods: Ten chronic stroke survivors performed 5 sets of 30 hip flexion maximal dynamic voluntary contractions (MDVC). A maximal isometric voluntary contraction (MIVC) was performed before and after completion of the dynamic contractions. Both the paretic and nonparetic legs were tested. Results: Reduction in hip flexion MDVC torque in the paretic leg (44.7%) was larger than the nonparetic leg (31.7%). The paretic leg had a larger reduction in rectus femoris EMG (28.9%) between the first and last set of MDVCs than the nonparetic leg (7.4%). Reduction in paretic leg MDVC torque was correlated with self-selected walking speed (r2 = 0.43), while reduction in MIVC torque was not (r2 = 0.11). Conclusions: Reductions in maximal dynamic torque of paretic hip flexors may be a better predictor of walking function than reductions in maximal isometric contractions
Commercialisation and commodification of breastfeeding: video diaries by first-time mothers.
BACKGROUND: Many of aspects of our lives became increasingly commercialised in post-modern society. Although breastfeeding is perhaps a late comer to this process in recent years, it too has seen significant commercialisation facilitated by social media and our obsession with celebrity culture. This paper explores how the commercialisation and commodification of breastfeeding impacts mothers' experiences of breastfeeding. METHODS: In a qualitative study, five mothers in the United Kingdom recorded their real-time breastfeeding experiences in video diaries. Using a multi-modal method of analysis, incorporating both visual and audio data, a thematic approach was applied. FINDINGS: Women preparing for breastfeeding are exposed to increasing commercialisation. When things do not go to plan, women are even more exposed to commercial solutions. The impact of online marketing strategies fuelled their need for paraphernalia so that their dependence on such items became important aspects of their parenting and breastfeeding experiences. CONCLUSIONS: The audio-visual data demonstrated the extent to which "essential" paraphernalia was used, offering new insights into how advertising influenced mothers' need for specialist equipment and services. Observing mothers in their video diaries, provided valuable insights into their parenting styles and how this affected their breastfeeding experience
A High Fraction of Ly-alpha-Emitters Among Galaxies with Extreme Emission Line Ratios at z ~ 2
Star-forming galaxies form a sequence in the [OIII]/H-beta vs. [NII]/H-alpha
diagnostic diagram, with low metallicity, highly ionized galaxies falling in
the upper left corner. Drawing from a large sample of UV-selected star-forming
galaxies at z~2 with rest-frame optical nebular emission line measurements from
Keck-MOSFIRE, we select the extreme ~5% of the galaxies lying in this upper
left corner, requiring log([NII]/H-alpha) =
0.75. These cuts identify galaxies with 12 + log(O/H) <~ 8.0, when oxygen
abundances are measured via the O3N2 diagnostic. We study the Ly-alpha
properties of the resulting sample of 14 galaxies. The mean (median) rest-frame
Ly-alpha equivalent width is 39 (36) A, and 11 of the 14 objects (79%) are
Ly-alpha-emitters (LAEs) with W_Lya > 20 A. We compare the equivalent width
distribution of a sample of 522 UV-selected galaxies at 2.0<z<2.6 identified
without regard to their optical line ratios; this sample has mean (median)
Ly-alpha equivalent width -1 (-4) A, and only 9% of these galaxies qualify as
LAEs. The extreme galaxies typically have lower attenuation at Ly-alpha than
those in the comparison sample, and have ~50% lower median oxygen abundances.
Both factors are likely to facilitate the escape of Ly-alpha: in less dusty
galaxies Ly-alpha photons are less likely to be absorbed during multiple
scatterings, while the harder ionizing spectrum and higher ionization parameter
associated with strong, low metallicity star formation may reduce the covering
fraction or column density of neutral hydrogen, further easing Ly-alpha escape.
The use of nebular emission line ratios may prove useful in the identification
of galaxies with low opacity to Ly-alpha photons across a range of redshifts.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables. Accepted for publication in Ap
Detection of a Substantial Molecular Gas Reservoir in a brightest cluster galaxy at z = 1.7
We report the detection of CO(2-1) emission coincident with the brightest
cluster galaxy (BCG) of the high-redshift galaxy cluster SpARCS1049+56, with
the Redshift Search Receiver (RSR) on the Large Millimetre Telescope (LMT). We
confirm a spectroscopic redshift for the gas of z = 1.7091+/-0.0004, which is
consistent with the systemic redshift of the cluster galaxies of z = 1.709. The
line is well-fit by a single component Gaussian with a RSR resolution-corrected
FWHM of 569+/-63 km/s. We see no evidence for multiple velocity components in
the gas, as might be expected from the multiple image components seen in
near-infrared imaging with the Hubble Space Telescope. We measure the
integrated flux of the line to be 3.6+/-0.3 Jy km/s and, using alpha_CO = 0.8
Msun (K km s^-1 pc^2)^-1 we estimate a total molecular gas mass of
1.1+/-0.1x10^11 Msun and a M_H2/M_star ~ 0.4. This is the largest gas reservoir
detected in a BCG above z > 1 to date. Given the infrared-estimated star
formation rate of 860+/-130 Msun/yr, this corresponds to a gas depletion
timescale of ~0.1Gyr. We discuss several possible mechanisms for depositing
such a large gas reservoir to the cluster center -- e.g., a cooling flow, a
major galaxy-galaxy merger or the stripping of gas from several galaxies -- but
conclude that these LMT data are not sufficient to differentiate between them.Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ Letter
Genetic association analysis of the cardiovascular biomarker: N-terminal fragment of pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP)
BACKGROUND: NT-proBNP is a biomarker of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Little is known about the heritability and genetic variants associated with NT-proBNP. Therefore, we estimated the heritability of and examined genetic associations of SNPs in the BNP gene region with circulating NT-proBNP and prevalent CVD in 4,331 participants from the Long Life Family Study (LLFS).
METHODS AND RESULTS: Genotypes of 10 SNPs from the NPPB and NPPA regions that encode BNP and A-type natriuretic peptide, respectively, were tested for association with NT-proBNP and prevalent cardiovascular disease and risk factors. We performed analyses using the Sequential Oligogenic Linkage Analysis (SOLAR) program to account for family relatedness, and adjusted all models for age, sex, and field center. The mean age of the LLFS was 69.8 years (range 24-110) with 55.4% females. NT-proBNP was significantly heritable (h2 = 0.21; P = 4x10-14), and the minor alleles of rs632793 (p\u3c0.001) and rs41300100 (p = 0.05) were independently associated with higher serum NT-proBNP levels. Additionally, the minor allele of rs632793 was significantly and consistently associated with lower prevalent CVD, including blood pressures, independent of NT-proBNP level (all P\u3c0.05). Results for prevalent CVD, but not NT-proBNP levels, showed significant interaction by familial generation.
CONCLUSION: In this family-based study of subjects with exceptional longevity, we identified several allelic variants in the BNP gene region associated with NT-pro-BNP levels and prevalent CVD
No effect of seed source on multiple aspects of ecosystem functioning during ecological restoration: cultivars compared to local ecotypes of dominant grasses
Genetic principles underlie recommendations to use local seed, but a paucity of information exists on the genetic distinction and ecological consequences of using different seed sources in restorations. We established a field experiment to test whether cultivars and local ecotypes of dominant prairie grasses were genetically distinct and differentially influenced ecosystem functioning. Whole plots were assigned to cultivar and local ecotype grass sources. Three subplots within each whole plot were seeded to unique pools of subordinate species. The cultivar of the increasingly dominant grass, Sorghastrum nutans, was genetically different than the local ecotype, but genetic diversity was similar between the two sources. There were no differences in aboveground net primary production, soil carbon accrual, and net nitrogen mineralization rate in soil between the grass sources. Comparable productivity of the grass sources among the species pools for four years shows functional equivalence in terms of biomass production. Subordinate species comprised over half the aboveground productivity, which may have diluted the potential for documented trait differences between the grass sources to influence ecosystem processes. Regionally developed cultivars may be a suitable alternative to local ecotypes for restoration in fragmented landscapes with limited gene flow between natural and restored prairie and negligible recruitment by seed
Degradation of the cancer genomic DNA deaminase APOBEC3B by SIV Vif
APOBEC3B is a newly identified source of mutation in many cancers, including breast, head/neck, lung, bladder, cervical, and ovarian. APOBEC3B is a member of the APOBEC3 family of enzymes that deaminate DNA cytosine to produce the promutagenic lesion, uracil. Several APOBEC3 family members function to restrict virus replication. For instance, APOBEC3D, APOBEC3F, APOBEC3G, and APOBEC3H combine to restrict HIV-1 in human lymphocytes. HIV-1 counteracts these APOBEC3s with the viral protein Vif, which targets the relevant APOBEC3s for proteasomal degradation. While APOBEC3B does not restrict HIV-1 and is not targeted by HIV-1 Vif in CD4-positive T cells, we asked whether related lentiviral Vif proteins could degrade APOBEC3B. Interestingly, several SIV Vif proteins are capable of promoting APOBEC3B degradation, with SIVmac239 Vif proving the most potent. This likely occurs through the canonical polyubiquitination mechanism as APOBEC3B protein levels are restored by MG132 treatment and by altering a conserved E3 ligase-binding motif. We further show that SIVmac239 Vif can prevent APOBEC3B mediated geno/cytotoxicity and degrade endogenous APOBEC3B in several cancer cell lines. Our data indicate that the APOBEC3B degradation potential of SIV Vif is an effective tool for neutralizing the cancer genomic DNA deaminase APOBEC3B. Further optimization of this natural APOBEC3 antagonist may benefit cancer therapy

The therapeutic role of video diaries: A qualitative study involving breastfeeding mothers.
BACKGROUND: Despite breastfeeding providing maximum health benefits to mother and baby, many women in the United Kingdom do not breastfeed, or do so briefly. PURPOSE: Using tenets of ethnography, this study aimed to explore the everyday experiences of first time breastfeeding mothers in the early weeks following birth. METHODS: Using a camcorder, five mothers in the United Kingdom captured their real-time experiences in a video diary, until they perceived their infant feeding was established. Using a multidimensional approach to analysis, we examined how five mothers interacted with the camcorder as they shared their emotions, feelings, thoughts and actions in real-time. FINDINGS: Mothers recorded 294 video clips, total recording time exceeded 43h. This paper focuses on one theme, the therapeutic role of the camcorder in qualitative research. Four subthemes are discussed highlighting the therapeutic impact of talking to the camcorder: personifying the camcorder; using the camcorder as a confidante; a sounding board; and a mirror and motivator. CONCLUSION: Frequent opportunities to relieve tension by talking to "someone" without interruption, judgement or advice can be therapeutic. Further research needs to explore how the video diary method can be integrated into standard postnatal care to provide benefits for a wider population
