    Bull kelp, Nereocystis luetkeana, abundance in Van Damme Bay, Mendocino County, California

    Size and density data were collected for Nereocystis luetkeana sporophytes from kelp beds in Van Damme Bay, Mendocino County during May, June and July 1990. Length and weight measurements were made on individual plants from representative size groups collected from depths of 6.1 m and 12.2 m. Mean sporophyte weight was 268 g (SD 393 g), while mean stipe length was 214 cm (SD 275 cm). Densities were determined separately for those plants which had reached the surface and for all plants within the water column. Sixty-five 12.7 m2 surface quadrats yielded mean surface densities of 2.2 (SD 1.5) and 2.7 plants/m2 (SD 1.3) in June and July, respectively. Individual plants were counted within 42 1x5 m plots along benthic transect lines yielding average densities of 2.7 (SD 4.5) and 5.2 plants/m2 (SD 3.0) in May and July, respectively. Combined density and size data from July 1990 and kelp bed area estimates from fall 1988 for Van Damme Bay yielded a biomass estimate of 640 metric tons distributed over 45.7 hectares. (15pp.

    The focus of the present research was to investigate how Local Governments in Queensland were progressing with the adoption of delineated DM policies and supporting guidelines. The study consulted Local Government representatives and hence, the results reflect their views on these issues. Is adoption occurring? To what degree? Are policies and guidelines being effectively implemented so that the objective of a safer, more resilient community is being achieved? If not, what are the current barriers to achieving this, and can recommendations be made to overcome these barriers?     Interferometric scattering enables fluorescence-free electrokinetic trapping of single nanoparticles in free solution

    Anti-Brownian traps confine single particles in free solution by closed-loop feedback forces that directly counteract Brownian motion. The extended-duration measurement of trapped objects allows detailed characterization of photophysical and transport properties, as well as observation of infrequent or rare dynamics. However, this approach has been generally limited to particles that can be tracked by fluorescent emission. Here we present the Interferometric Scattering Anti-Brownian ELectrokinetic trap (ISABEL trap), which uses interferometric scattering rather than fluorescence to monitor particle position. By decoupling the ability to track (and therefore trap) a particle from collection of its spectroscopic data, the ISABEL trap enables confinement and extended study of single particles that do not fluoresce, that only weakly fluoresce, or which exhibit intermittent fluorescence or photobleaching. This new technique significantly expands the range of nanoscale objects that may be investigated at the single-particle level in free solution.Comment: Manuscript and SI; videos available upon reques

Specifically, this analysis focuses on agencies that increased ridership during the latter half of the decade. While transit ridership increased steadily by 13 percent nationwide between 1995 and 1999, not all systems experienced ridership growth equally. However, many scientific data over the past 50+ years were collected at a time when the technology for curation, storage, and dissemination were primitive or non-existent and consequently many of these datasets are not available publicly. These so-called “dark data” sets are essential to the understanding of how the ocean has changed chemically and biologically in response to the documented shifts in temperature and salinity (aka climate change). An effort is underway to bring into the light, dark data about zooplankton collected in the 1970s and 1980s as part of the cold-core and warm-core rings multidisciplinary programs and other related projects. Zooplankton biomass and euphausiid species abundance from 306 tows and related environmental data including many depth specific tows taken on 34 research cruises in the Northwest Atlantic are online and accessible from the Biological and Chemical Oceanography Data Management Office (BCO-DMO).This is a contribution from the Biological and Chemical Oceanography Data Management office (BCO-DMO) that is funded by the United States National Science Foundation Grants OCE-1031253 and OCE-1435578
