Spatial distributions of perchloroethylene reactive transport parameters in the Borden Aquifer
We determined the descriptive statistical and spatial geostatistical properties of the perchloroethene ln Kd and the ln k of a 1.5 m thick by 10 m horizontal transect of the Borden aquifer near the location of the Stanford-Waterloo (SW) tracer experiment. The ln Kd distribution is not normal and is right skewed because of a few high values that occur localized in two regions of the transect. In contrast, the ln k data can be characterized by a normal distribution. A linear regression of ln Kd on ln k yields a statistically significant positive correlation, also shown at small lags in the cross correlogram. No significant vertical or horizontal trend in the ln Kd data was detected. The semivariogram ranges of ln k and ln Kd differ from one another in the vertical direction (0.33 ± 0.06 m and 0.20 ± 0.04 m, respectively) and are much less than the horizontal ranges (a few meters). Despite significant effort the horizontal range of ln Kd remains poorly characterized because of limitations of the sample locations. Many of the characteristics described above do not match those assumed in prior theoretical studies that examined the importance of various aquifer characteristics on SW tracer transport. We suggest that there is knowledge to be gained by revisiting the conclusions of these prior studies in light of the new information presented here
Longitudinal study of trachomatous trichiasis in The Gambia: barriers to acceptance of surgery.
PURPOSE: Investigation of compliance with surgery for trachomatous trichiasis has become a priority of the World Health Organization. This study was conducted to investigate attitudes toward trichiasis and its treatment and to determine the rate of surgical uptake in The Gambia. METHODS: A 1-year longitudinal study was performed in 190 subjects with trichiasis. Persons with major trichiasis (involving five lashes or more) were referred for surgery, and those with minor trichiasis were advised to epilate. Outcome measures included attitudes toward trichiasis and its treatment, reported barriers to surgical uptake, acceptance rates for surgery, and factors affecting acceptance. RESULTS: Twenty-three percent (95% confidence interval [CI] 16.5%-30.6%) of subjects with major trichiasis attended for surgery during the year. Degree of ignorance about surgery, symptoms impeding work, and a multiple income source for the head of household predicted attendance. Reported lack of time predicted nonattendance. Sixty-eight percent of patients who had undergone surgery were trichiasis free at last follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: Poor attendance for surgery remains a problem in The Gambia. Barriers include ignorance and lack of time and money. Health education and surgical delivery strategies are needed to overcome these barriers. Regular audit of surgical results is necessary, with retraining where indicated

The inhibitory receptor LILRB4 (ILT3) modulates antigen presenting cell phenotype and, along with LILRB2 (ILT4), is upregulated in response to Salmonella infection.
BACKGROUND: Leukocyte Ig-like receptors (LILR) are a family of innate immune receptors with immunomodulatory functions. High-level expression of the receptors LILRB2 (ILT4) and LILRB4 (ILT3) is a feature of tolerogenic antigen presenting cells and has been observed in cancer and transplant situations. There are relatively few studies regarding these receptors in the context of infection and it is not yet clear how LILRB4 exerts its inhibitory effects. RESULTS: We studied the effects of LILRB4 ligation on antigen presenting cell phenotype, and the expression of LILRB2 and LILRB4 on Salmonella-infected antigen presenting cells. Ligation of LILRB4 throughout in vitro culture of dendritic cells led to an upregulation of the co-stimulatory protein CD86. Alterations in the production of IL-8 and IL-10 by LILRB4-ligated macrophages were also observed. Infection with Salmonella typhimurium or TLR stimulation with Salmonella components led to an upregulation of LILRB2 and LILRB4. CONCLUSION: Our results indicate that the inhibitory effects of LILRB4 do not result from a failure to upregulate co-stimulatory proteins. Numerical Study of Turbulent Mixing Layers with Non-Equilibrium Ionization Calculations
Highly ionized species such as C IV, N V, and O VI, are commonly observed in
diffuse gas in various places in the universe, such as in our Galaxy's disk and
halo, high velocity clouds (HVCs), external galaxies, and the intergalactic
medium. One possible mechanism for producing high ions is turbulent mixing of
cool gas with hotter gas in locations where these gases slide past each other.
By using hydrodynamic simulations with radiative cooling and non-equilibrium
ionization (NEI) calculations, we investigate the physical properties of
turbulent mixing layers and the production of high ions. We find that most of
the mixing occurs on the hot side of the hot/cool interface and that the mixed
region separates into a tepid zone containing radiatively cooled, C IV-rich gas
and a hotter zone which is rich in C IV, N V, and O VI. Mixing occurs faster
than ionization or recombination, making the mixed gas a better source of C IV,
N V, and O VI in our NEI simulations than in our collisional ionization
equilibrium (CIE) simulations. In addition, the gas radiatively cools faster
than the ions recombine, which also allows large numbers of high ions to linger
in the NEI simulations. For these reasons, our NEI calculations predict more
high ions than our CIE calculations predict. We also simulate various initial
configurations of turbulent mixing layers and discuss their results. We compare
the results of our simulations with observations and other models, including
other turbulent mixing calculations. The ratios of C IV to N V and N V to O VI
are in reasonable agreement with the averages calculated from observations of
the halo. There is a great deal of variation from sightline to sightline and
with time in our simulations. Such spatial and temporal variation may explain

Phylodynamic analysis of an emergent Mycobacterium bovis outbreak in an area with no previously known wildlife infections
1. Understanding how an emergent pathogen successfully establishes itself and persists in a previously unaffected population is a crucial problem in disease ecology, with important implications for disease management. In multi-host pathogen systems this problem is particularly difficult, as the importance of each host species to transmission is often poorly characterised, and the disease epidemiology is complex. Opportunities to observe and analyse such emergent scenarios are few. 2. Here, we exploit a unique dataset combining densely-collected data on the epidemiological and evolutionary characteristics of an outbreak of Mycobacterium bovis (the causative agent of bovine tuberculosis, bTB) in a population of cattle and badgers in an area considered low-risk for bTB, with no previous record of either persistent infection in cattle, or of any infection in wildlife. We analyse the outbreak dynamics using a combination of mathematical modelling, Bayesian evolutionary analyses, and machine learning. 3. Comparison to M. bovis whole-genome sequences from Northern Ireland confirmed this to be a single introduction of the pathogen from the latter region, with evolutionary analysis supporting an introduction directly into the local cattle population six years prior to its first discovery in badgers. 4. Once introduced, the evidence supports M. bovis epidemiological dynamics passing through two phases, the first dominated by cattle-to-cattle transmission before becoming established in the local badger population. 5. Synthesis and applications. The raw data object of this analysis were used to support decisions regarding the control of a M. bovis emergent outbreak, of considerable concern because of the geographical distance from previously known high-risk areas. Our further analyses, estimating the time of introduction (and therefore the likely magnitude of any hidden outbreak) and the rates of cross-species transmission, provided valuable confirmation that the extent and focus of the imposed controls were appropriate. Not only these findings strengthen the call for genomic surveillance, but they also pave the path for future outbreaks control, providing insights for more rapid and decisive evidence-based decision-making. As the methods we used and developed are agnostic to the disease itself, they are also valuable for other slowly transmitting pathogens
Starcounts Redivivus. IV. Density Laws Through Photometric Parallaxes
In an effort to more precisely define the spatial distribution of Galactic
field stars, we present an analysis of the photometric parallaxes of 70,000
stars covering nearly 15 square degrees in seven Kapteyn Selected Areas. We
address the affects of Malmquist Bias, subgiant/giant contamination,
metallicity and binary stars upon the derived density laws. The affect of
binary stars is the most significant. We find that while the disk-like
populations of the Milky Way are easily constrained in a simultaneous analysis
of all seven fields, no good simultaneous solution for the halo is found. We
have applied halo density laws taken from other studies and find that the
Besancon flattened power law halo model (c/a=0.6, r^-2.75) produces the best
fit to our data. With this halo, the thick disk has a scale height of 750 pc
with an 8.5% normalization to the old disk. The old disk scale height is
280-300 pc. Corrected for a binary fraction of 50%, these scale heights are 940
pc and 350-375 pc, respectively. Even with this model, there are systematic
discrepancies between the observed and predicted density distributions. Our
model produces density overpredictions in the inner Galaxy and density
underpredictions in the outer Galaxy. A possible solution is modeling the
stellar halo as a two-component system in which the halo has a flattened inner
distribution and a roughly spherical, but substructured outer distribution.
Further reconciliation could be provided by a flared thick disk, a structure

Planetary Nebulae as standard candles XI. Application to Spiral Galaxies
We report the results of an [O III] lambda 5007 survey for planetary nebulae
(PN) in three spiral galaxies: M101 (NGC 5457), M51 (NGC 5194/5195) and M96
(NGC 3368). By comparing on-band/off-band [O III] lambda 5007 images with
images taken in H-alpha and broadband R, we identify 65, 64 and 74 PN
candidates in each galaxy, respectively. From these data, an adopted M31
distance of 770 kpc, and the empirical planetary nebula luminosity function
(PNLF), we derive distances to M101, M51, and M96 of 7.7 +/- 0.5, 8.4 +/- 0.6,
and 9.6 +/- 0.6 Mpc. These observations demonstrate that the PNLF technique can
be successfully applied to late-type galaxies, and provide an important overlap
between the Population I and Population II distance scales. We also discuss
some special problems associated with using the PNLF in spiral galaxies,
including the effects of dust and the possible presence of [O III] bright
