AbstractMesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) represent an attractive source of cells for cell therapy in veterinary medicine. Recent interest in stem cell biology and its therapeutic potential has led to search for accessible new sources of stem cells. Wharton‘s Jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells are multipotent with specific potential to differentiate into multiple lineages. The aim of our study was the isolation, characterization and multilineage differentiation of Wharton‘s Jelly derived mesenchymal stem cells obtained from canine umbilical cord following Caesarean section. Our data confirmed that the isolated and cultivated mesenchymal stem cells have multipotent based on specific surface antigen expressing and differentiation capacity

Evaluation of contrast enhanced ultrasonography (ceus) in canine mammary gland tumours

Contrast enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) is a non-invasive method of examination that surpassed the normal standard B-Mode and Doppler ultrasonography (US). The use of contrast agents (CA) allows the examiner to observe a more detailed map of the tumor vascularization. The aim of this study was to establish the advantages and disadvantages of this method. The study was conducted on 5 canine patients, different breeds with the the age between 8 and 12 years. Each patient was presented with a mammary tumor and evaluated through a standard US. The CEUS examination was performed after injecting intravenously, in bolus, 1 ml/10 kg of prepared UCA SonoVue (8 μl/ml sulphur hexafluoride microbubbles, Bracco, Italy). A 3-minute recording was saved after the administration and afterwards evaluated. The results were satisfactory, but the small mammary nodules were not only hard to examine but did not show a difference from the B-Mode US. The advantages were clear in the larger and more aggressive tumors and a layout of the neovascularization was quite clear. In conclusion, at this stage of the study the disadvantages outweigh the advantages and further investigations are needed

Mastitis Acuta in a Pure Breed Cane Corso female. A Case Report

Data regarding bitch mastitis is fairly scarce compared to the literature regarding ruminant mastitis. Neglecting clinical and subclinical cases of mastitis can be life threatening for both dam and puppies. The aim of this report is to present a case of Mastitis acuta complicated with a case of neonatal septicaemia in a Cane Corso (Canis lupus familiaris L.) pure breed female. Laboratory assays showed a milk pH value of 7.5, milk cytology revealed the presence of segmented neutrophils, while foamy cells, phagocytosis and highly pathogenic bacteria (i.e. Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) were isolated from milk and puppy. To the author's knowledge, this is the first case of bitch mastitis linked to neonatal septicaemia with mixed E. coli and P. aeruginosa infection
