Cultivating alternative subsistence farming practices in Dangriga, Belize
Subsistence farming, also referred to as backyard farming, is an important opportunity for families in areas of low economic status. Small scale poultry farming is another practice often used by families in similar situations because of the financial and nutritional benefits provided. By combining the two practices in a process where they each benefit from the other, a sustainable system can be created. The poultry-garden system can provide a source of food for the household and, if run effectively, supplemental income can be generated through the sale of excess poultry, eggs, or vegetation. This project attempted to take the concept of a sustainable poultry-garden system and create a model of it using the resources available in the city of Dangriga, Belize

Ab-initio theory of quantum fluctuations and relaxation oscillations in multimode lasers
We present an \emph{ab-initio} semi-analytical solution for the noise
spectrum of complex-cavity micro-structured lasers, including central
Lorentzian peaks at the multimode lasing frequencies and additional sidepeaks
due to relaxation-oscillation (RO) dynamics. In~Ref.~1, we computed the
central-peak linewidths by solving generalized laser rate equations, which we
derived from the Maxwell--Bloch equations by invoking the
fluctuation--dissipation theorem to relate the noise correlations to the
steady-state lasing properties; Here, we generalize this approach and obtain
the entire laser spectrum, focusing on the RO sidepeaks. Our formulation treats
inhomogeneity, cavity openness, nonlinearity, and multimode effects accurately.
We find a number of new effects, including new multimode RO sidepeaks and three
generalized factors. Last, we apply our formulas to compute the noise
spectrum of single- and multimode photonic-crystal lasers.Comment: 27 pages, 3 figure
The Unusual Substrate Specificity of a Virulence Associated Serine Hydrolase from the Highly Toxic Bacterium, \u3cem\u3eFrancisella tularensis\u3c/em\u3e
Francisella tularensis is the causative agent of the highly, infectious disease, tularemia. Amongst the genes identified as essential to the virulence of F. tularensis was the proposed serine hydrolase FTT0941c. Herein, we purified FTT0941c to homogeneity and then characterized the folded stability, enzymatic activity, and substrate specificity of FTT0941c. Based on phylogenetic analysis, FTT0941c was classified within a divergent Francisella subbranch of the bacterial hormone sensitive lipase (HSL) superfamily, but with the conserved sequence motifs of a bacterial serine hydrolase. FTT0941c showed broad hydrolase activity against diverse libraries of ester substrates, including significant hydrolytic activity across alkyl ester substrates from 2 to 8 carbons in length. Among a diverse library of fluorogenic substrates, FTT0941c preferred α-cyclohexyl ester substrates, matching with the substrate specificity of structural homologues and the broad open architecture of its modeled binding pocket. By substitutional analysis, FTT0941c was confirmed to have a classic catalytic triad of Ser115, His278, and Asp248 and to remain thermally stable even after substitution. Its overall substrate specificity profile, divergent phylogenetic homology, and preliminary pathway analysis suggested potential biological functions for FTT0941c in diverse metabolic degradation pathways in F. tularensis
