Cold War Crossings: Border Poetics in Postwar German and Polish Literature

Focusing on transborder travel narratives by two German authors and one Polish author, “Cold War Crossings” investigates how their writing responds to the postwar demarcation of separate Eastern and Western spheres of influences. Central to each of their oeuvres is the topos of the border broadly conceived, from the material, ideological, and psychic boundaries of the Iron Curtain to the Saussurean bar of the linguistic sign. By presenting border-crossing as an act of both political and aesthetic transgression, these writers advance uniquely literary alternatives to the rigid geopolitical divisions of their age. This dissertation analyzes the way in which each author’s poetics of the border informs, among other things, their manipulation of narrative structure, their unique employment of figurative language, and their shared proclivity for intertextuality, all of which address and reorient different kinds of textual boundaries. In this way, it is a contribution to the ever-expanding field of border studies and other scholarly investigations of the discursive production of mental maps. At the same time, however, the dissertation argues by way of its three case studies for a closer examination of the formal elements of literary texts that often go overlooked in such analyses. Conceived as an interdisciplinary and comparative study, “Cold War Crossings” seeks to overstep barriers between national literatures as well as disciplines by combining cultural studies, literary criticism, and historical analysis. Furthermore, the dissertation’s joint study of German and Polish literatures also contributes to recent debates on Europe as it counteracts traditional Eurocentric approaches that disregard Eastern Europe

Moving Your Student Law Reviews Towards An Open-Access Publishing Model

This is a PDF of the slide presentation given by the authors at the 2012 CALI Conference for Law School Computing, held June 21-23, 2012 at the Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego, CA. The CALI session discussed the trend among law schools towards an open access publishing model for both faculty scholarship and student law reviews. Included was a brief overview of the Durham Statement on open access legal publishing and the advantages for law schools that move to this publishing model (including improved accessibility and access and even increased citation rates). Additionally, the session focused on ways to promote an institutional repository within a law school and how to develop relationships with faculty and other stakeholders to acquire content. Once a journal has been moved to an open access publishing model, metadata for all of the articles in the journal’s backfile must be gathered and uploaded to the journal’s online site. Before it can be uploaded, the metadata must be parsed to match the structure of the journal’s web site. The last part of the session described how Santa Clara Law, which recently moved all three of its student law reviews to an open access publishing model using Digital Commons from BePress, automated the process of gathering, parsing and uploading metadata for the backfiles of its law reviews via spreadsheets, thus saving a tremendous amount of time and human effort

So you want to digitize?: Maximizing the value of a digitization project

This session will cover how to make the best use of a digitization project in your library. Discussion topics will include whether to outsource to a third-party vendor or select your own digitization equipment. At Santa Clara Law, we purchased two book scanners (one Zeutschel Zeta and one Zeutschel 12000 BC) and two films scanners (U-Scan Patron Scanner) that are used to digitize materials for our institutional repository. During the beginning stages of this project, we learned what mistakes libraries frequently make when embarking on a digitization project and what pitfalls to avoid. Additionally, we will discuss how to create a digitization workflow including staff training and collaboration with library interns and other libraries. This session may be particularly useful for law schools thinking about moving their student journals to an open-access publishing model or those with archival collections that would like to expose to a larger audience. At Santa Clara, we spent nearly a year researching the various equipment options before making a purchase and can speak about what is currently available on the market and how much you should budget

A weird but interesting journey: Personal traumatic growth for individuals with hallucinations

Objectives: Hallucinations can be traumatic. However, research into 'post-traumatic growth' in relation to hallucinations is scarce. This study aims to further our understanding of personal growth in the context of hallucinations. Design: A phenomenological qualitative approach was used to explore experiences of personal growth with hallucinations, adopting Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) methodology. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven people who experience hallucinations. Participants were asked about experiences of personal growth, their expectations of individual transformation, and facilitating and hindering factors in the attainment of personal growth. Transcripts were analysed ensuring suitable saturation and representation of the data was achieved. Results: One overall theme (A journey towards personal growth) and five subthemes were identified: A difficult journey taken day by day, Stigma, Acceptance, Finding the right support, and Personal growth. Conclusions: Findings supported personal growth in the context of hallucinations and highlighted facilitators and barriers. Practitioner points • There is scarce literature supporting the development of personal growth with hallucinatory experiences and it is empirically limited. The present research provides greater information into the phenomenon to inform service provision. • The importance of acceptance and maintaining hope for change was highlighted. • Services and the use of coping strategies were both identified as facilitative and hindering of personal growth. • This research provides a necessary alternative to the often negative literature; challenging societal perceptions and helping promote much needed hope in clinicians, the public and individuals experiencing hallucinations

An analysis of racial stereotyping in SABC-TV commercials in the context of reform, 1978-1992.

Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of Natal, Durban, 1998.This thesis uses racial stereotyping as a critical approach to the analysis of television advertising commercials broadcast by the SABC during the period of Reform in South Africa, 1978-1992. Due respect is given to theoretical debates about the ideological role of consumer advertising. In the light of various possible causes, such as an increasing importance of blacks to the consumer market, government co-option in terms of 'Total Strategy', or calls by the business sector for a strong black middle class, particular attention is given to the underlying dynamics of black middle class depiction in advertisements. The Introduction outlines the main arguments of the thesis, key theoretical moves, and discusses research sources. Chapter 1 clarifies the concept of stereotype, the nature of racial stereotyping, and proposes a category framework for the analysis of racial stereotyping in a reformist apartheid context. Chapter 2 marries a racial stereotyping critical approach of consumer advertising in South Africa with theoretically-informed advertising criticism in terms of a conception of consumption as a means of hegemony. Chapter 3 outlines aspects of the post-World War II political economy which have underpinned the ensuing forms of South African racial stereotyping. Chapter 4 examines the basis of the SABC-TV broadcasting dispensation and its influence upon the forms of racial stereotyping in commercials. Chapter 5 examines the use of political and public service advertising during the P.W. Botha era, in consideration of what influence such political dimensions of Reform might have had upon the ideological content of advertising in general. Chapter 6 examines advertising production practices during the period of Reform in order to assess the position of the advertising industry with regard to the changing forms in racial stereotyping. Chapter 7 applies the preceding theorisation and assessments about the relationship between the political economy and changing forms of racial stereotyping in SABC-TV commercials in a case study based on the advertising commercial 'history reel' for Castle Lager. Chapter 8 gives further verification in a case study of the history reel for Rama margarine. The Conclusion sums up the preceding chapters and reassess earlier observations. Appendices in Volume II of the thesis provide 830 shot-by-shot descriptions and 890 stills for 41 commercials that comprise the two case studies
