New Trends in Energy Harvesting from Earth Long-Wave Infrared Emission

    Get PDF
A review, even if not exhaustive, on the current technologies able to harvest energy from Earth's thermal infrared emission is reported. In particular, we discuss the role of the rectenna system on transforming the thermal energy, provided by the Sun and reemitted from the Earth, in electricity. The operating principles, efficiency limits, system design considerations, and possible technological implementations are illustrated. Peculiar features of THz and IR antennas, such as physical properties and antenna parameters, are provided. Moreover, some design guidelines for isolated antenna, rectifying diode, and antenna coupled to rectifying diode are exploited

General aspects of Hertzian potentials modeling in integrated optics

    Get PDF
This work introduces a novel time-domain numerical simulator of integrated optical waveguides. Only solutions of two scalar Helmholtz-equations are used in the evaluation of electric and magnetic Hertzian-potentials that yields the electromagnetic field in the time domain, and the frequency response by the discrete Fourier transform. All the field components are obtained directly from the scalar potentials, and are not interrelated as in finite-difference time domain method. The Hertzian potential method (HPM) considers the field-perturbation effect in proximity of the dielectric discontinuities by generators modeling and takes into account the numerical error of a wave that travels in a dielectric multilayered optical guide. We present in this work the general finite difference discretization and the numerical setting of the HPM related to optical waveguide full-wave modeling. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd

Comparing proximity for couples of close airports. Case studies on city-airports in the pre COVID-19

    Get PDF
Following the existing relationships between cities and airports, well depicted in the sectorial literature ((Thierstein and Conventz, 2018), (Tira et al., 2006), (Freestone, 2009), (Percoco, 2010), (Ventura et al., 2020), this paper aims to investigate the linkages between the touristic traffic of some airports and the related development of the cities in which they are placed. The chosen case studies regard different remote regions (ONU, 2018) of three different countries (Italy, Norway, Cyprus), considering couples of near airports (Dziedzic and Warnock-Smith, 2015). The paper focuses the analysis on four couples of near airports, two from the South of Italy (Bari and Brindisi in the Apulia Region; Palermo and Trapani in Sicily), one in the North of Norway (Bødo and Narvik in Hålogaland) and the last one in the Republic of Cyprus (Larnaca and Paphos). A GIS analytic methodology has been used to describe the differences between the different couples of airports. Managed by the GIS analytical evaluation, the purpose of this paper is to give support to the different theories about the development of couples of close airports, using geographic tools to support economic and financial planning ((Cook and Billig, 2017) (Graham, 2014), (AntonínKazdaa et al., 2017) (Young and Wells, 2011))]. There has been pointed out the results of the adopted methodology on the working Norwegian network system analysis

The large-scale environment of FR 0 radio galaxies

We explore the properties of the large-scale environment of FR0 radio galaxies belonging to the FR0CAT sample which includes 104 compact radio sources associated with nearby (z<0.05) early-type galaxies. By using various estimators we find that FR0s live in regions of higher than the average galaxies density and a factor two lower density, on average, with respect to FRI radio galaxies. This latter difference is driven by the large fraction (63%) of FR0s located in groups formed by less than 15 galaxies, an environment which FRIs rarely (17%) inhabit. Beside the lack of substantial extended radio emission defining the FR0s class, this is the first significant difference between the properties of these two populations of low power radio galaxies. We interpret the differences in environment between FR0s and FRIs as the due to an evolutionary link between local galaxies density, BH spin, jet power, and extended radio emission.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables (Pre-proofs version - Published in A&A
