Localised necessary conditions for singularity formation in the Navier-Stokes equations with curved boundary

    Get PDF
We generalize two results in the Navier-Stokes regularity theory whose proofs rely on `zooming in' on a presumed singularity to the local setting near a curved portion ΓΩ\Gamma \subset \partial\Omega of the boundary. Suppose that uu is a boundary suitable weak solution with singularity z=(x,T)z^* = (x^*,T^*), where xΩΓx^* \in \Omega \cup \Gamma. Then, under weak background assumptions, the L3L_3 norm of uu tends to infinity in every ball centered at xx^*: \begin{equation*} \lim_{t \to T^*_-} \lVert u(\cdot, t)\rVert_{L_{3}\left(\Omega \cap B(x^*,r)\right)} = \infty \quad \forall r > 0. \end{equation*} Additionally, uu generates a non-trivial `mild bounded ancient solution' in R3\mathbb{R}^3 or R+3\mathbb{R}^3_+ through a rescaling procedure that `zooms in' on the singularity. Our proofs rely on a truncation procedure for boundary suitable weak solutions. The former result is based on energy estimates for L3L_3 initial data and a Liouville theorem. For the latter result, we apply perturbation theory for LL_\infty initial data based on linear estimates due to K. Abe and Y. Giga

High school athletes and over the counter performance enhancing drugs : an inside look and website

    Get PDF
This study will take a look into four young male athlete’s lives and if they use over the counter performance enhancing drugs. With the recent debates on steroid use in major sports, I felt it was necessary to see how teens are using the products that are legal and readily available. Furthermore, I will see what students think of these legal supplements and what kind of peer pressures these kids face as the desire or need for athletic scholarships has increased. Included in the analysis will be two doctors, three athletic directors, the commissioner of the IHSAA, and four male athletes in their senior year of high school. These interviews will be used to determine the extent of knowledge they have about teen’s usage and their opinions on whether or not kids should be using these products. Also within this paper will be my own testimonial into my supplement use. I was one of those teens with natural athletic ability but a very lean frame. I wanted to push myself to get to the next level of athletics and pursue a dream of Division-1A football.Department of TelecommunicationsThesis (M.A.

Perceptions of leadership traits and affective behaviors: The effect on U.S. presidential election success: Working paper series--05-11

    Get PDF
This paper addresses leadership quality using follower assessments of traits and affective relationships. We compare US presidential candidates who were successful in their bids for the presidency to those who were unsuccessful. Perceived knowledge, charisma, morality and decency, as well as warmth and compassion are significantly different between these two groups, indicating that these perceptual qualities are key factors in election success. Each of these perceptual qualities is also significantly linked with follower assessments of leadership quality. Additionally, findings indicate that assessments of follower positive and negative affect (including pride, hopefulness, fear and anger) toward leaders are significantly related to follower assessments of leadership ratings

How does person-organization fit affect behavioral and attitudinal outcomes? Working paper series--09-01

    Get PDF
While a significant amount of research has investigated the relationship between person-organization fit (P-O fit) and multiple individual outcomes, potential mediators of these relationships have been studied less frequently. This study explores psychological empowerment as mediating the relationship between P-O fit and two individual-level outcomes: in-role performance and intention to turnover. Structural equation modeling results suggest that psychological empowerment partially mediates the P-O fit's relationships with intention to turnover and in-role performance

Title from PDF of title page (University of Missouri--Columbia, viewed on March 25, 2011).The entire thesis text is included in the research.pdf file; the official abstract appears in the short.pdf file; a non-technical public abstract appears in the public.pdf file.Thesis advisor: Dr. Joan Hermsen.M.A. University of Missouri--Columbia 2010.Much of the literature on single motherhood has been devoted to poor or middle class single mothers. In this study I interviewed working class single mothers. Their unique position between the poor and the middle class leads to interesting observations about how women at the boundaries do and perform class. These women, while aware of the contradictions between their material realities and their symbolic realities, attempted to establish a middle class sense of identity through consumption, concerted cultivation and associational distancing strategies. These findings indicate that class is a salient feature in the life of working class single mothers and that they invoke strategies to maintain a sense of class identity and dignity.Includes bibliographical reference

Relativistic many-body calculations of energies of n=3 states in aluminumlike ions

    Get PDF
Energies of 3l3l′3l″ states of aluminumlike ions with Z=14?100 are evaluated to second order in relativistic many-body perturbation theory starting from a 1s22s22p6 Dirac-Fock potential. Intrinsic three-particle contributions to the energy are included in the present calculation and found to contribute about 10?20 % of the total second-order energy. Corrections for the frequency-dependent Breit interaction and the Lamb shift are included in lowest order. A detailed discussion of contributions to the energy levels is given for aluminumlike germanium (Z=32). Comparisons are made with available experimental data. We obtain excellent agreement for term splitting, even for low-Z ions. These calculations are presented as a theoretical benchmark for comparison with experiment and theory
