The background, aims, experimental method, and the first years results and discussion have been reported in the 1989 experimental summary.
The latter phase of the study was continued until December 1990 on six of the sites (these were Brookhampton, Donnybrook, Jindong, Manjimup, Carbunup and Pemberton) with similar measurements being obtained at regular intervals. The sheep monitored during this phase were the 1989 Main mob and the 1989 Replacement mob

Maintenance P and S for pastures in the low rainfall area. To determine the best rates of Gypsum and a Phosphate Fertiliser required to maintain optimum pasture growth on old land. Stocking rate and rate of super on Cyprus Barrel Medic Pasture 66M30. To determine if topdressing annual medic pasture on heavy wheatbelt land increases carrying capacity or animal production per head. Also to determine the relationship between super rate and animal production. Continuous Cropping with N.P.S. To determine the number of continuous cropping on different soil types using N.P. and S fertilisers. 69NO1 T. HENDERSON· QUELAGETTING 1970, ·1971 MEAN WHEAT YlELDS (Kg/Ha) 69NA1 B. Organochlorine residues in soil and plant.
Trial 5812
To determine the relationship between soil and plant Dieldrin contamination in vegetables.
Location: Bunbury Regional Office (experimental site
Evaluation of annual and short term rotation ryegrasses.
The increasing range of annual and short term rotation ryegrasses have been evaluated in the high rainfall regions of the South West since 1986. To date promising later maturing cultivars such as Concord (in particular), Progrow, Aristocrat have consistently outyielded the standard early maturing cultivar Wimmera during the early winter period and in spring. These later maturing varieties have the potential to more fully utilise the whole of the growing season and to be conserved as hay during drier spring weather, whilst still retaining digestibility, protein and metabolisable energy. Viable seed production for self regeneration from later cut hay pastures is often low yielding when compared with the early seed production of Wimmera
Sheep production systems on Mediterranean annual pastures.
Trial 84V2. Location: Vasse Research Station.
The background, aims and measurements have been detailed in previous annual reports (SEE 1987 Experimental Summary).
As in the previous 4 years of this trial the 1988 pasture measurements have confirmed the hypothesis that increasing stocking rates result in a reduction in pasture growth rates, and in turn a reduction in total annual pasture production
Development and management of cattle pastures in the high rainfall zone.
Trial 87V8
Development and management of cattle pastures in the high rainfall zone.
To compare the effect of pasture species, pasture management and grazing management on pasture quantity, quality and cattle production.
Phalaris evaluation
In 1989 ninety three lines of Phalaris agrundinacea backcross with P. aquatica, bred by Dr. R.N. Oram (CSIRO Canberra) were drilled sown into unreplicated 10m single row plots at Vasse Research Station. In addition 7 controls (with two replications) were planted. Similar trials were planted by Mr. L. Cransberg (Albany) and Dr. R.N. Oram (Bendigo).

Soil-plant-sheep organochlorine pesticide research
1. Soil O/C decay (5812)
Locations: Brookhampton, Carbunup, Dardanup, Denmark, Donnybrook, Goodwood, Jindong, Kirrup, Manjimup, Pemberton, Redmond.
To determine the rate of decay of soil Dieldrin.
2. Soil profile distribution of O/Cs (5812) (88AL21/1)
To determine the distribution of O/cs at 1 cm intervals down the soil profile.
3. Soil decontamination of O/Cs (5812)
To assess practical and economic techniques for decontaminating soil Dieldrin residues.
4. The accumulation and rundown of Dieldrin in wethers. (5841)
To determine the relationship between the levels of Dieldrin contamination in soil, pasture, sheep body and wool fat.
5. Surface drainage trial 86V1/5164
Efficient surface drainage of paddocks can be achieved by laser levelling. These freely drained pastures should now not be limited by waterlogging or salt accumulation. These pastures should also produce more herbage and carry more stock to pay the $500/ha cost of laser levelling. The trial plots were laser levelled in 1986 and again in 1987 before being sown to pasture and grazed with sheep.
This experiment will be cropped in 1990 and resown to pasture in 1991. Pasture growth rates will be recorded in 1991/92

Locations: Albany, Bunbury, Busselton and Manjimup.
In 1988 a research programme was initiated to help define the relationship between soil and plant contamination. Two main experiments were established 1) Pasture contamination in annual and perennial grazed swards. 2) Plant species contamination in a wider range of pasture and crops
Surface drainage trial.
Trial 86V1
Location: Vasse Research Station
Laser levelling demonstration areas at Vasse Research Station have improved surface drainage and reduced waterlogging, flooding and salt accumulation. Reseeding these laser treated areas has resulted in greater pasture productivity and stock carrying capacity. The overall cost of this exercise has to be met by increased animal productivity
