    Characterization of pediatric patients with iron-deficiency anemia

    Background: iron-deficiency anemia is the most widespread nutritional deficiency in the world.Objective: to characterize pediatric patients with a diagnosis of iron-deficiency anemia attended to at the Department of Hematology of the "Mártires de Las Tunas" Pediatric Hospital, from January 1 to December 31, 2016.Methods: a cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out with children diagnosed with iron-deficiency anemia attended to at the place and during the period herein mentioned. The sample consisted of 107 patients who presented microcytic anemia and serum iron values lower than 11 micromole/l; patients with thalassemia and anemia secondary to chronic processes were excluded. Data from the laboratory records were used and processed using descriptive statistics.Results: pre-school patients prevailed with 55 cases for 51,4 % followed by children younger than 1 year with 31 patients for 29 %. Concerning gender, there was a prevalence of the female sex in 56,1 %. Patients with serum iron between 7-8,9 micromole/ml prevailed in 57 % of the studied sample.Conclusions: the studied patients of this research were characterized.</p

    Characterization of diabetic patients with Microalbuminuria

    Background: diabetic nephropathy is the cause of 10 to 15 % of chronically ill terminal patients and a significant percentage are diagnosed in very advanced stages.Objective: to characterize, from the clinical and epidemiological point of view, the diabetic patients with microalbuminuria from Las Tunas municipality and who were treated at the Diabetes Provincial Center during 2014.Methods: a descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out in 87 patients treated at the place and time mentioned above. Patients under 18 years old and those with more than 10 years of evolution of diabetes mellitus were excluded. Health histories were used as a secondary source of collecting information. The data were treated according to descriptive statistics and expressed in absolute and percentage values.Results: the most frequent diabetes mellitus was type II in 86,2 % of patients; in 44,8 %, the time evolution of the disease was 1 to 3 years; the most frequent predisposing factor was hypertension in 62,1 %; in 41,4 % of the study sample, the 0,04 g / L semi-quantitative microalbuminuria predominated.Conclusions: diabetic patients with microalbuminuria from Las Tunas municipality were characterized. More than half the sample had hypertension as a predisposing factor.</p
